How AI Coding Agents Interpret Website Designs and Turn Them Into Code

AI coding agents can turn a website design into working code, but they do not “see” a design and automatically produce perfect production software. The reliable workflow combines a visual reference with structured design data—frames, layers, measurements, components, variables, tokens and assets—plus the target project’s framework and conventions. A bridge such as Figma’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server delivers that context; the coding agent interprets it, writes code, and adapts the result to the existing codebase. You still need to review the rendered page, responsive states and behavior separately.

What an AI coding agent actually interprets

A design-to-code request can provide several kinds of evidence. Each answers a different implementation question, and the quality of the final result depends on how well those inputs agree.

Visual evidence from screenshots

A screenshot tells the agent what the page should look like at one particular viewport. It exposes visual relationships such as hierarchy, alignment, color, approximate spacing and image composition. That is useful when the source file is unavailable, but a screenshot does not explicitly identify a reusable component, reveal a hidden responsive state, or specify whether a gap is 16 pixels or 1 rem. The agent must infer those details, so two implementations can look similar while using very different markup and CSS.

Structured design context

Design tools can expose the underlying representation instead of only a bitmap. Figma documents tools named get_screenshot for visual inspection and get_design_context for structured information. That context can include selected frames, layer hierarchy, dimensions, constraints, layout properties, components, variables, design tokens and exportable assets. Measurements and relationships that would otherwise be guesses become explicit inputs to the coding task.

Project and design-system context

The agent also needs to know where the code belongs. Framework choice, routing conventions, styling approach, component APIs, accessibility rules and existing tokens determine what “correct” code means in a particular repository. A design may call for a button, card or navigation pattern that already exists in production. Supplying the project’s conventions lets the agent adapt the design to those building blocks rather than creating a visually similar duplicate.

How the design-to-code handoff works

  1. Select the implementation scope. Choose the frame, flow or component being built. A task-scoped selection prevents the agent from receiving an entire file full of unrelated screens, variables and components.
  2. Collect both visual and structural context. Use a screenshot to communicate appearance and structured design data to communicate layout, properties, variables and assets. The combination is more precise than either input alone.
  3. Expose the destination codebase. State the framework, relevant directories, naming conventions, responsive breakpoints, token format and any components the agent must reuse. Include the behavior expected from interactive controls, not just their appearance.
  4. Map design components to production components where possible. A mapping system such as Code Connect can tell the agent that a design-system component corresponds to an existing implementation. The agent can then import and configure that component instead of generating a lookalike.
  5. Ask the agent to implement and adapt. An MCP server passes context to the coding assistant; it does not write finished production code on its own. The assistant translates the context into the project’s language and framework, resolving details that the design file does not specify.
  6. Render, compare and test. Open the result in a browser at the reference viewport and at responsive widths. Check spacing, typography, assets and hierarchy, then exercise every visible control and state. Visual similarity and functional correctness are separate checks.

Where MCP fits—and where it does not

Model Context Protocol is a bridge between a design source and an AI assistant. In Figma’s documented workflow, the server exposes design context, screenshots and related tools to a supported coding client. The assistant receives that information in its working context and generates or edits files in the project.

That distinction matters when a result is incomplete. The MCP server is not a one-click “design to perfect code” tool, as Figma’s developer documentation puts it. It does not decide your application architecture, verify every interaction or guarantee that generated code follows your repository’s conventions. Those decisions remain part of the coding agent’s task and the human review process.

How to generate code from a Figma design

1. Prepare the design selection

Open the specific frame or component to implement and include the states that matter: desktop and mobile layouts, expanded and collapsed navigation, validation messages, loading states or empty states. If the agent can access only one artboard, it cannot reliably infer behavior shown elsewhere.

2. Clarify the implementation target

Tell the agent the framework and styling system, where the page should be added, and which routes or components already exist. Identify the design-system package, token files and asset directories. If a component must be reused, name its import path or provide the mapping rather than leaving the agent to search broadly.

3. Retrieve focused context

Request the selected frame’s screenshot and structured design context. Figma’s tooling is intended to provide metadata, screenshots and asset exports through task-focused prompts. Keep retrieval narrow enough that the agent can distinguish relevant variables and components from unrelated material in the file. More context is not automatically better; irrelevant options can cause the agent to choose the wrong token or component.

4. State behavior in the prompt

Describe what should happen when a user clicks, types, submits, opens or closes an element. A static frame cannot reveal keyboard behavior, focus handling, validation rules, loading transitions or error recovery. Ask the agent to preserve the project’s existing interaction patterns and to add tests where the repository supports them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Let the agent inspect the repository before editing

A good implementation starts with reconnaissance: locate the app entry point, routing, global styles, token definitions, shared components and test commands. Instruct the agent to use existing primitives and to avoid introducing a second styling convention. This step often has more impact on maintainability than an extra screenshot.

6. Implement in small, reviewable changes

Have the agent build the shell first, then the major sections, then states and polish. Small changes make it easier to identify whether a mismatch comes from incorrect context, a token choice, an asset import or a layout rule. Ask for a short explanation of assumptions that the design did not specify.

7. Compare at the reference viewport

Render the page at the same dimensions as the selected frame. Check container width, alignment, spacing rhythm, font metrics, line wrapping, image cropping, border radii, shadows and color tokens. A screenshot comparison is useful, but inspect the DOM and computed styles when the cause of a mismatch is unclear.

8. Test responsive and interactive states

Resize the browser through the supplied responsive states and test every visible control. Confirm that menus, dialogs, tabs, forms, links and keyboard focus work as intended. Do not treat a visually close desktop screenshot as evidence that the mobile layout or behavior is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using an existing design system instead of generating lookalikes

Design-to-code work is most reliable when the agent can connect design components to production components. Code Connect is intended for that purpose: it maps a component in the design file to the corresponding implementation. The agent can then use the real API, token names and accessibility behavior rather than recreating a visually similar component.

Provide the mapping scope deliberately. If the design uses a component that has no production equivalent, ask the agent to identify that gap and create the smallest new primitive needed. If a mapping exists but the design shows a variant that the production component does not support, the correct outcome may be a component change or a documented exception—not silently duplicated markup.

Variables and tokens also need interpretation. A color variable may represent a semantic role such as surface, border or action rather than a literal hex value. Tell the agent which token source is authoritative and how themes are selected. Otherwise, generated code can hard-code values that look right in one screenshot but break dark mode, branding or future design updates.

Why generated code looks different from the design

The agent received only a screenshot

With no measurements or component metadata, the agent must estimate spacing, typography and constraints. Supply structured context when available and identify the exact frame rather than a cropped image.

The wrong scope or variables were retrieved

Large design files contain similarly named components and unused variables. Narrow the request to the selected flow and specify the intended component set and token collection.

Fonts or assets are unavailable

Fallback fonts change line breaks, control heights and perceived spacing. Confirm that the required font files are available to the project and that image assets can be exported or imported through the supported workflow. Figma’s documented write-to-canvas workflow has particular font and image limitations; do not assume those capabilities apply equally to every client or direction of transfer.

The repository’s primitives differ from the design

An existing button or grid may enforce padding, focus styles or breakpoints that do not match the frame exactly. Decide whether the design should use the production primitive, whether that primitive needs a supported variant, or whether the design itself needs reconciliation.

Behavior was never specified

A screenshot cannot tell an agent what happens after submission, how a menu closes, or which validation message appears. Add explicit interaction requirements and test them independently of the visual comparison.

Evaluate visual fidelity and functionality separately

Benchmark work such as VISTA evaluates visual matching and browser behavior as distinct dimensions. Its reported finding is that the two are only partially coupled: a page can resemble the reference while its controls are broken, or it can function correctly while its spacing and typography are wrong. Use separate acceptance checks rather than one overall impression.

  • Visual checks: compare geometry, typography, color, assets, hierarchy, responsive transitions and component states against the reference.
  • Functional checks: activate controls, submit forms, navigate routes, test keyboard focus, verify loading and error states, and confirm that data changes are reflected correctly.
  • Code-quality checks: inspect component reuse, token usage, semantic HTML, accessibility attributes, responsive rules, test coverage and removal of dead generated code.

Code generation and write-to-canvas are different directions

Generating application code from a design is not the same as writing structured content back into a design file. Figma describes write-to-canvas as a beta-quality capability that may need manual updating and cleanup. Its documented limitations include no image support in that workflow, a response limit per call and requirements around uploaded fonts. Those constraints do not describe every code-generation path, so verify the current client, seat permissions and plan requirements before designing a team process.

For a code-first handoff, treat the design tool as a source of context and the repository as the source of executable behavior. For a canvas-writing workflow, treat the output as an editable draft that requires a designer’s review.

Choosing a design-to-code workflow

Workflow Input fidelity Codebase awareness Best use Main review need
Text description only Low; relies on interpretation Depends on the prompt and repository access Early exploration or a rough prototype Geometry, content and missing states
Screenshot plus text Visual target at one viewport Moderate if conventions are supplied Recreating a simple, static surface Responsive behavior, measurements and interactions
Screenshot plus structured design context High for the selected frame and its metadata Strong when tokens and components are mapped Implementing a defined page or flow Visual comparison, behavior and maintainability
Structured context plus Code Connect High, with explicit component relationships Highest when mappings are current Extending an established design system Variant coverage and API correctness
Write-to-canvas workflow Produces design-file content rather than application code Not a substitute for repository integration Drafting or updating a canvas Manual cleanup, asset support and beta limitations

A practical review checklist

  • Confirm that the selected frame and all required responsive states were included.
  • Check that the agent used the intended components, variables and tokens instead of hard-coded lookalikes.
  • Compare typography with the correct font files, weights, line heights and wrapping.
  • Verify image exports, cropping, aspect ratios and loading behavior.
  • Inspect spacing and alignment at the reference viewport, then at intermediate widths.
  • Operate every visible control with a mouse, keyboard and, where relevant, touch input.
  • Check focus, labels, roles, error messages and semantic structure.
  • Review the diff for duplicated components, dead styles, unnecessary dependencies and assumptions the design did not establish.
  • Record unresolved differences as explicit design or product decisions instead of hiding them in one-off CSS.

Limits and decisions to verify before rollout

Figma’s MCP documentation is product-specific; other design platforms and coding clients may expose different tools or metadata. Access depends on a supported MCP client and the account’s setup. Features described as beta can change, and current seat, plan, font, asset and usage limits should be confirmed against the provider’s documentation before standardizing a team workflow.

The durable principle is broader than any one integration: give the agent the smallest complete set of visual, structural and project context needed for the task, then judge the result on appearance, behavior and code quality independently. That is how a design reference becomes maintainable software rather than a screenshot-shaped prototype.
