How AI Agents Use Crypto Wallets and Smart Contracts to Make Payments

AI agents can make crypto payments only when software gives them access to an authorized wallet or signing service and a way to submit the resulting transaction. The language model decides which permitted action to request; the wallet or signing layer creates or approves the transaction; the blockchain or a payment protocol settles it.

A smart-contract account can add programmable validation, spending rules, recovery and fee logic. For online services, an HTTP payment flow such as x402 can ask for crypto during an API request. These are building blocks, not a single universal system: the exact steps depend on the wallet provider, blockchain, asset, account implementation and service being paid.

The four parts of an agent payment

An agent payment is a coordinated workflow rather than a thought that directly moves money. Four parts must work together:

  1. Agent and tools: The model selects an allowed action, such as sending USDC, calling a contract or paying for an API request.
  2. Wallet and signing service: A wallet holds assets or controls the authority to authorize a transaction. It may sign locally, use a managed service or require a human approval.
  3. Submission path: Software broadcasts the signed transaction, or submits an account-abstraction operation to infrastructure that will include it on-chain.
  4. Settlement target: The recipient’s address, token contract, smart contract or paid service verifies the payment and performs its part of the exchange.

Coinbase’s AgentKit is one example of an agent toolkit. Its documentation describes it as framework-agnostic and wallet-agnostic, with tools for on-chain actions. That description applies to the toolkit itself, not to every wallet or agent framework.

What happens when an agent sends tokens

A basic token transfer follows this sequence:

  1. Instruction arrives. A user or application asks for a bounded action, such as sending 10 USDC to a specified address or paying an approved vendor.
  2. Agent interprets the request. The model extracts the asset, amount, destination, chain and any memo or contract call. Good implementations validate these fields rather than trusting free-form text.
  3. Policy checks run. Software checks balances, allow-lists, transaction limits, session limits, chain restrictions and whether a person must approve the action.
  4. Transaction data is built. For a token transfer, this normally includes the token contract, recipient, amount and network fee settings. A contract interaction includes the target contract and encoded function call.
  5. The signing layer authorizes it. The wallet or signing service signs the transaction, or rejects it. The model should not receive an unrestricted private key merely because it can write code or text.
  6. The transaction is submitted. A node or account-abstraction relay broadcasts the authorized operation.
  7. Confirmation is checked. The application waits for the relevant network result and records the transaction identifier, status and any failure reason.

Separating reasoning from authorization is the central safety boundary. The model can propose an action, but a wallet, policy engine and network determine whether funds actually move.

Where the wallet’s signing authority lives

Wallet architecture determines who can authorize a payment and what the agent can access. Compare designs by the location of keys, the approval path and the controls around signing.

Design question Why it matters What to verify
Key custody A compromised runtime or prompt should not automatically expose a transferable private key. Where keys are held, how signing requests reach them and whether the agent ever sees signing material.
Authorization scope An agent may need to pay routinely without gaining authority over every asset. Per-transaction limits, session limits, destination allow-lists and asset or network restrictions.
Human involvement Large or unusual payments may need an explicit approval. Which thresholds pause execution and how an approver verifies the exact destination and amount.
Recovery Lost credentials, revoked sessions or service outages can otherwise strand funds. Recovery administrator, multisignature process, key rotation and an emergency withdrawal path.

Coinbase describes its Agentic Wallet product as keeping keys in secure Coinbase infrastructure rather than exposing them to the agent prompt or language model. It also advertises session and per-transaction spending caps, enclave isolation and know-your-transaction screening. Those are claims about that product’s architecture and controls; they are not properties required of every agent wallet and do not remove smart-contract, custody or operational risk.

How smart-contract accounts change the payment model

A conventional externally owned account uses a private-key signature to authorize transactions. A smart-contract account can place validation logic in code. That logic may check several signatures, enforce spending limits, permit recovery, restrict destinations or accept a session key with narrower authority.

Ethereum’s ERC-4337 standard describes an account-abstraction route that does not require the account itself to be an ordinary key-controlled address. The agent’s requested action is represented as a UserOperation. A separate mempool holds these operations. Bundlers collect compatible operations and submit a transaction that calls the standard EntryPoint contract. The specification states: “A special class of actor called bundlers package up a set of these objects into a transaction making a handleOps call to a special contract, and that transaction then gets included in a block.”

Validation inside the account

The smart-contract account receives the operation and runs its validation logic. If the signature, nonce, session permission and policy checks pass, the account executes the requested call. If validation fails, the operation should not execute. The exact rules come from the account implementation; ERC-4337 is a mechanism, not a guarantee that an account is safe or well designed.

Bundlers

Bundlers provide inclusion infrastructure. They package multiple user operations and submit them through the EntryPoint. Their role does not mean they control the user’s funds: the account’s validation logic still determines whether an operation is accepted.

Paymasters and fee abstraction

A paymaster is a helper contract that agrees to pay transaction fees under its own rules. This can support sponsored transactions, token-denominated fee schemes or other fee abstractions. It does not make every transaction free: a paymaster, relayer or other sponsor must actually accept the cost, and availability depends on the account implementation and network.

Bundled actions

Account-abstraction systems can bundle several operations into one flow, such as setting an allowance and calling a contract. Bundling can reduce user interaction, but each operation still needs explicit validation. Developers should display every call a bundle contains instead of presenting it as one opaque “pay” button.

Using x402 for paid online services

x402 is a payment-request pattern for HTTP services. A server can respond with HTTP status 402, indicating that payment is required, and the client can provide a crypto payment before retrying or completing the request. Coinbase’s overview describes the pattern for crypto pay-per-use services, including stablecoin payments. Its agent wallet skills documentation lists discovering x402 services and making paid x402 API requests.

x402 is a route for service payments, not proof that an API is trustworthy or that every API accepts it. Before an agent pays, the application should validate the service identity, endpoint, asset, network, amount, expiry and expected response.

Typical x402 sequence

  1. The agent calls an API endpoint.
  2. The service returns HTTP 402 with payment instructions.
  3. The agent’s payment tool parses the instructions and checks them against policy.
  4. The wallet or smart-contract account authorizes the required transfer.
  5. The client retries the request with the payment evidence expected by that service.
  6. The service verifies payment and returns the requested data or operation result.

Implementations differ in supported assets, networks, payment headers and verification rules. Treat the service’s documented requirements as authoritative for that integration, and fail closed when the request contains an unsupported chain or token.

A practical implementation plan

The following sequence keeps the agent’s reasoning, wallet authority and application policy separate.

1. Define the payment envelope

  • Specify permitted assets and networks.
  • Set a maximum amount per transaction and per session.
  • Decide whether destinations must be allow-listed.
  • Define when a person must approve.
  • Record what evidence the application will retain: request, policy decision, transaction identifier and final status.

2. Choose the account and signing model

Decide whether a managed signer, user-controlled wallet or smart-contract account fits the threat model. Confirm whether the signer is isolated from the agent runtime, how credentials are rotated and how access is revoked. Do not pass a raw seed phrase or unrestricted private key in a prompt, environment variable visible to untrusted tools or model context.

3. Connect narrowly scoped tools

Expose separate functions for tasks such as checking a balance, preparing a transfer, requesting approval and submitting an approved operation. A read-only balance tool should not silently gain signing capability. Tool schemas should require explicit chain, token, amount and destination fields.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Add deterministic policy checks

Before signing, compare the request with limits and business rules. Reject malformed addresses, unsupported chains, excessive decimals, expired payment requests and contract calls outside an allow-list. Resolve human-readable names to addresses before approval and show the final address to the approver.

5. Simulate and test on a test network

AgentKit quickstarts include testnet activity. Testnet success demonstrates that the integration can construct and submit a flow; it is not evidence of production payment performance. Test rejected signatures, insufficient balances, fee spikes, duplicate requests, delayed confirmations and service timeouts.

6. Sign, submit and reconcile

After authorization, submit the transaction or UserOperation, persist its identifier and poll for the required confirmation state. Make retries idempotent: a timeout after submission must not cause the agent to send a second payment without checking whether the first one settled.

7. Monitor and revoke

Alert on unusual destinations, repeated failures, rapid spending, policy bypass attempts and unexpected contract methods. Provide an operator action that disables the agent session, rotates credentials or pauses the account.

Design choices worth comparing

Axis Questions for a design review
Signing and custody Who holds keys, who can authorize, and is any signing credential exposed to the agent runtime?
Account logic Does the account support programmable validation, recovery, multisignature rules or ERC-4337 operations?
Fee handling Does the sender pay native fees, does a paymaster sponsor them, or does the implementation support another fee asset?
Spending authority Are there transaction and session caps, destination restrictions or a human approval step?
Service acceptance Does the specific service accept x402, and which assets and networks does its implementation support?

No single row determines the safest choice. A highly programmable account can reduce manual work while increasing contract complexity. A managed signer can isolate keys from the model while introducing provider dependence. A sponsored-fee design can improve usability while depending on a paymaster’s availability and policy.

Common failure modes and fixes

The agent says it paid, but no transaction exists

Reasoning output is not proof of authorization. Check whether the signing call ran, whether policy rejected the request and whether a transaction or user-operation identifier was returned.

The transaction is rejected during validation

Inspect the account’s signature, nonce, session key, destination and contract-call rules. For ERC-4337, also verify that the operation meets the account and EntryPoint requirements.

The wallet has tokens but cannot submit

The account may lack the network’s native fee asset, or a paymaster may not cover that operation. Confirm fee sponsorship terms and the selected network before retrying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An x402 request looks suspicious

Do not accept a payment request solely because it uses HTTP 402. Verify the service, amount, token, chain, expiration and requested endpoint. Reject unsupported or ambiguous instructions.

A timeout causes duplicate payments

Look up the original transaction or user operation before retrying. Use an idempotency key at the application layer where the service supports one, and keep a durable payment ledger.

A contract call does more than expected

Decode the target and method, display every call in a bundle and restrict contracts to reviewed addresses. Never treat an arbitrary calldata blob as an ordinary token transfer.

What an operator should require before production

  • A documented asset, chain and destination policy.
  • Separate read, prepare, approve and submit permissions.
  • Per-transaction and per-session limits, with an emergency pause.
  • Key isolation and a tested recovery or rotation process.
  • Human review for high-value, novel or irreversible actions.
  • Simulation and tests for rejected, delayed and duplicated operations.
  • Monitoring for spending anomalies and contract-method changes.
  • Clear records linking the user request, policy decision, authorization and settlement result.

With these boundaries, an agent can coordinate token transfers, smart-contract calls and paid API requests without confusing language-model output with financial authority. Wallet custody, account validation, fee sponsorship and service acceptance remain explicit engineering decisions.
