How AI Agents on Wearables Work—and What They Can Do Without Your Phone

A wearable AI agent can handle some tasks without you taking out your phone, but that does not necessarily mean it was set up without a phone, can reach the internet by itself, or can run every AI feature offline. Its capabilities depend on where its sensors, software and AI processing run—and on whether it can reach a connected service.

Meta’s Ray-Ban Display glasses offer a concrete example: certain Web Apps run directly on the glasses, yet live data may need Wi-Fi or a phone tether, and location can come from a paired phone with permission. The distinction is useful well beyond glasses: “hands-free,” “standalone” and “offline” describe different things.

What makes a wearable an AI agent?

A wearable AI agent is a system, not simply a model tucked inside a watch or pair of glasses. It may combine sensors and controls on the device, software running locally, a companion phone, a network connection, cloud AI models and external services. Which parts are involved depends on the task.

For instance, a camera can provide visual context, microphones can capture speech, and motion sensors can register movement. The wearer might interact by speaking, tapping, gesturing or looking at a display. Compatible Meta glasses support camera, audio, motion, display and gesture capabilities through Meta’s Device Access Toolkit. That does not mean every wearable continuously records or perceives its surroundings; behavior depends on the device and the active feature.

Where does the work happen?

On the wearable

The device can perform some actions locally. Meta says actions such as placing a call or answering a text can happen entirely on its glasses. Local execution can also make sense for basic control or input classification, without sending every step to a remote model.

Through the phone

A phone may handle setup, permissions, app integration or a capability the wearable does not supply itself. Meta says its glasses require the Meta AI app to pair. That requirement is separate from whether a particular app later runs directly on the glasses. On Ray-Ban Display, for example, Web Apps can obtain location from the paired phone when the wearer gives permission.

In the cloud

More demanding AI models may be too large to run on a small wearable. Meta’s engineering team says advanced features on its glasses rely on models that run in the cloud. Meta describes Private Processing as running AI models inside confidential virtual machines; that is the company’s account of its architecture, not an independent audit, and it does not establish that every AI request uses that system.

Cloud-backed features need a connection to their service. That path might be the wearable’s Wi-Fi or a phone tether. Without a working connection, live cloud inference and fresh online data should not be assumed to work.

What “without your phone” can—and cannot—mean

There are at least three separate questions behind the phrase: Can you use the feature without taking your phone out? Can the wearable operate after initial pairing without a phone nearby? Can it complete the task without any network? A “yes” to one does not answer the others.

Meaning What it tells you What it does not guarantee
Hands-free or glanceable You can use voice, gestures, audio or a display without reaching for the phone. That setup, permissions or the service works without a phone or network.
Standalone app The app executes on the wearable rather than requiring the phone app to run it. That every capability inside the app is local or available offline.
Offline operation A function can run without a network connection, often using local software or cached content. That live AI inference, new online data or account-backed services remain available.

Meta’s Web Apps documentation says these apps run directly on Ray-Ban Display glasses. They can make API calls over glasses Wi-Fi or a phone tether, and support service workers and the Cache API for some offline behavior. The same documentation says location is supplied by the paired phone with permission. These details are compatible: an app can run on the glasses while individual services still depend on a phone or connection.

How wearable inputs become useful actions

Voice, cameras and motion

Speech can provide a command, while a camera or motion sensor can supply context for a task. The software may process some of that input on the device and send other work to a connected model or service. The available sources do not establish one universal processing path for all features, so check the specific function rather than assuming that all sensing is local or all of it is uploaded.

Gestures and muscle signals

Meta’s Neural Band provides an example of wearable control that does not require taking out a phone. It uses electromyography (EMG) to detect wrist muscle activity and classify it as digital commands. Meta says this gesture classification is processed locally on-device. That explains where the control signal is interpreted; it does not show that an AI model answering a separate question also runs locally.

Audio and visual output

A wearable may respond through speakers, notifications, short text, haptics or an in-lens display. Meta’s September 17, 2025 product announcement describes Ray-Ban Display as showing messages, photo previews, translations and Meta AI help without requiring the wearer to pull out a phone. Meta also said the display is “isn’t on all the time — it’s designed for short interactions that you’re always in control of.” That is the company’s product-positioning language.

What a real device example reveals

Ray-Ban Display illustrates why it is more useful to examine features individually than to label an entire wearable “phone-free.” Some apps run on the glasses; an online request still needs a network path; location may depend on the paired phone; and pairing itself requires Meta’s app. The glasses can therefore support phone-free interactions without being independent of the phone for every purpose.

Meta’s September 17, 2025 announcement gives company-published battery figures: up to six hours of mixed-use battery life for the glasses, and up to 30 hours total with the charging case. Meta gives the Neural Band an “up to” 18-hour battery figure and an IPX7 water rating. These are vendor specifications, not independent test results. Meta also says its surface-EMG work involved nearly 200,000 research participants; that figure describes the company’s research, not a measure of device accuracy or a guarantee of performance for an individual wearer.

What happens when the network or service disappears?

Offline support is usually feature-specific. Cached screens or previously stored content may remain available, while a request that needs a cloud model, fresh information or an external account may fail. A device can still turn on or expose basic local controls even if its central AI service is unavailable.

Service continuity matters too: a wearable that relies on a vendor’s cloud can lose important features if that service ends. Humane’s Ai Pin consumer FAQ appeared in a search-result excerpt to say that cloud-dependent voice interactions and AI responses would not be included after February 28, 2025, while offline functions such as checking battery level would remain. The official page could not be opened to verify the excerpt, so its exact terms should be treated cautiously. The broader practical point is to check what still works locally if a service or network is unavailable.

How to check a wearable’s phone and internet dependencies

  1. Identify setup requirements. Check whether pairing, account activation or permissions require a companion app, and whether that phone must remain nearby during normal use.
  2. Separate local actions from AI requests. Look for feature-specific explanations of what runs on the wearable, what runs through the phone and what uses cloud processing.
  3. Find the connection path. Establish whether the device uses its own Wi-Fi, a phone tether, cellular service or no network for the feature in question.
  4. Ask what “offline” preserves. Distinguish cached screens and local controls from live AI answers, fresh data and connected-service functions.
  5. Check inputs, outputs and permissions. Note which camera, microphone, location, gesture or display capabilities a feature uses, and what permissions it needs.
  6. Look for ongoing service dependencies. Check what functionality relies on the vendor’s cloud and what happens if access to that service ends.
  7. Read battery claims in context. Note whether a figure is a company specification, what usage condition it describes and whether an accessory is included.

This checklist helps distinguish a wearable that frees you from reaching for your phone from one that can genuinely complete a particular task on its own.
