Yes—but only in a very specific laboratory demonstration. A 2025 Science study showed that electron irradiation can convert submicrocrystals of adamantane into cubic nanodiamonds. The experiment used an electron beam in vacuum, 80–200 kiloelectronvolt (keV) electrons, temperatures from 100 to 296 kelvin, and irradiation lasting tens of seconds.

That result does not mean any hydrocarbon crystal can be converted this way. Other hydrocarbons tested in the same work did not form nanodiamonds, and the reports provide no production yield, cost analysis, or evidence that the method is commercially ready.

What the 2025 experiment actually demonstrated

Jiarui Fu, Takayuki Nakamuro, and Eiichi Nakamura reported the work in “Rapid, low-temperature nanodiamond formation by electron-beam activation of adamantane C–H bonds,” published in Science in 2025 (389[6764]:1024–1030; DOI 10.1126/science.adw2025).

The precursor was adamantane, prepared as submicrocrystals. In a vacuum electron-microscopy setup, the team irradiated those crystals with electrons at 80–200 keV while holding the sample between 100 and 296 K. Nanodiamond formation occurred on a timescale of tens of seconds under the reported conditions. The products were cubic nanodiamonds, and hydrogen gas evolved during the transformation.

The wording matters: the result establishes a reaction for adamantane under specialized conditions, not a general rule for hydrocarbon crystals. The study’s abstract specifically reports that other hydrocarbons tested did not form nanodiamonds.

How the conversion proceeds

1. The beam activates the adamantane crystal

The electron beam supplies energy to molecules in the crystal without requiring the extreme bulk pressures associated with some conventional diamond-synthesis routes. The reported temperature range is comparatively low—100 to 296 K—but the sample still has to be inside a vacuum electron-beam instrument.

The experiment was observed with time-resolved transmission electron microscopy (TEM). That allowed the investigators to follow structural changes while irradiation was taking place rather than relying only on a before-and-after image.

2. Adamantane molecules form oligomers

The first visible solid-stage products were oligomers: groups of adamantane-derived units linked together. These intermediates appeared before the final diamond particles. Their presence supports a stepwise transformation rather than an instantaneous collapse of each starting crystal into a diamond particle.

3. C–H bond cleavage controls the rate

A substantial kinetic isotope effect was one of the key mechanistic clues. Replacing hydrogen with its heavier isotope changed the reaction rate enough for the authors to identify C–H bond cleavage as rate-determining. In practical terms, removing hydrogen from the organic precursor is the bottleneck that allows the carbon framework to reorganize toward a diamond structure.

4. Spherical cubic nanodiamonds appear

After the oligomer stage, the material transformed into spherical nanodiamonds with a cubic crystal structure. Hydrogen gas evolution is consistent with the removal of hydrogen atoms as the carbon-rich material densifies and reorganizes.

The sequence—beam activation, oligomer formation, hydrogen removal, and nanodiamond growth—also explains why simply exposing an arbitrary organic crystal to electrons should not be expected to work. A suitable molecular structure and reaction pathway are required.

What conditions were required?

Experimental variable Reported value What it means
Precursor Adamantane submicrocrystals This is the demonstrated starting material; the result is not established for hydrocarbons generally.
Electron energy 80–200 keV The beam energy range used in the Science study.
Temperature 100–296 K The reported sample-temperature range during irradiation.
Environment Vacuum The experiment required an electron-beam/TEM vacuum environment.
Irradiation time Tens of seconds The abstract describes formation on this timescale under the reported conditions.
Atmosphere during reaction Hydrogen gas evolved Hydrogen release accompanied carbon-framework conversion.

These figures describe one laboratory setup. They are not operating specifications for a consumer device, and they do not establish that every electron microscope operated within those ranges will produce the same result. Beam current, dose, crystal preparation, sample thickness, and other instrument details would affect reproducibility, but the cited reports do not provide a production recipe or a validated scale-up protocol.

How large were the nanodiamonds?

The reported particle size depends on the source and irradiation history, so the figures should not be merged into one universal size claim.

Reported size Source and qualification
2–4 nanometers in diameter Chemistry World (2025) account of the experiment; this is secondary reporting of particles produced under the described conditions.
Up to 10 nanometers University of Tokyo (2025) institutional release, describing larger particles obtained with prolonged irradiation.

A 2–4 nm range and an “up to 10 nm” ceiling are not contradictory if they refer to different irradiation durations or sample observations. Neither figure is a guaranteed product specification, and the available accounts do not establish a complete particle-size distribution, batch uniformity, or a maximum size under all possible beam doses.

Why adamantane works while other hydrocarbons did not

Adamantane is not merely a generic source of carbon. Its molecular arrangement can pass through the oligomer and dehydrogenation sequence observed by TEM. The isotope-effect result indicates that the chemistry of its C–H bonds is central to the rate, while the observed intermediate structures show that the molecules can connect before reorganizing into diamond.

Other hydrocarbons tested by the authors failed to produce nanodiamonds. That negative result is essential when interpreting the headline. Electron irradiation is not a universal “hydrocarbon-to-diamond” converter. A different hydrocarbon may lack the right geometry, form an unhelpful decomposition product, lose carbon instead of assembling it, or follow a pathway that never reaches a diamond lattice.

Accordingly, buying a different hydrocarbon crystal—or buying adamantane without access to the required beam and vacuum equipment—would not reproduce the experiment.

How this differs from established diamond-making approaches

The University of Tokyo’s account places the finding alongside conventional approaches that use either extreme pressures and temperatures or chemical-vapor deposition (CVD). The electron-irradiation route is distinct in its precursor specificity, low reported temperature range, and reliance on focused electron instrumentation.

Comparison point Electron irradiation of adamantane Conventional high-pressure/high-temperature routes Chemical-vapor deposition

What reproducing the experiment would require

A conceptual workflow looks straightforward, but each step depends on specialized equipment and tightly controlled conditions.

  1. Prepare the precursor. Use adamantane in the submicrocrystal form examined in the study. The reports do not establish that an unspecified commercial crystal grade will behave identically.
  2. Load the sample into a vacuum electron instrument. The reaction was carried out under vacuum and monitored by TEM, not in an open laboratory container.
  3. Set the sample temperature. The reported range was 100–296 K. Temperature control is part of the experimental condition, not an optional refinement.
  4. Apply the electron beam. The Science abstract reports electron energies from 80 to 200 keV and irradiation lasting tens of seconds.
  5. Observe the intermediate stages. Time-resolved TEM was used to see oligomers form before spherical nanodiamonds. Without comparable in situ observation, it would be harder to distinguish the intended transformation from beam damage or another carbonaceous product.
  6. Characterize the product. A claim of nanodiamond formation requires structural and chemical characterization. The reports identify cubic nanodiamonds and hydrogen evolution; they do not describe a simple visual test that a non-specialist could use.

This is a laboratory protocol outline, not a do-it-yourself procedure. High-voltage electron equipment, vacuum systems, cryogenic or controlled-temperature stages, and TEM operation require trained personnel and appropriate facility safeguards.

What the result could enable

The University of Tokyo discusses possible future uses in electron lithography and nanodiamond arrays. The appeal is precise, localized formation: an electron beam could, in principle, activate selected regions and create nanoscale diamond features where they are needed.

Those are proposed applications, not demonstrated products. The cited material does not show a finished lithographic device, a working array, a manufacturing line, or performance data against existing nanodiamond-production techniques.

Nanodiamonds can be interesting for optical, mechanical, sensing, and biomedical research, but this particular study does not establish suitability for any of those uses. Particle size, surface chemistry, defect concentration, purification, aggregation, and biocompatibility would all need separate measurement for a specific application.

What experts said—and what remains unproven

Eiichi Nakamura, identified by the University of Tokyo as the study’s senior researcher, described the significance this way: “This example of diamond synthesis is the ultimate demonstration that electrons do not destroy organic molecules but let them undergo well-defined chemical reactions, if we install suitable properties in molecules to be irradiated.”

He also explained the motivation for the direct imaging: “Computational data gives you ‘virtual’ reaction paths, but I wanted to see it with my eyes.” The time-resolved TEM sequence supplies that visual evidence for the adamantane system.

Peter Schreiner, identified by Chemistry World as a nanodiamond researcher at the University of Giessen, called adamantane “readily accessible” and the electron-irradiation approach “scalable,” describing it as a promising route. That is an expert assessment of potential, not proof that production-scale scalability has been achieved.

Open questions before industrial use

  • Yield: The cited sources do not report the fraction of adamantane converted into nanodiamond.
  • Throughput: Tens-of-seconds formation in a TEM observation does not reveal how much material could be processed per hour.
  • Uniformity: The reports do not establish batch-to-batch size distribution, crystal-quality distribution, or surface-chemistry consistency.
  • Beam economics: No energy, maintenance, staffing, or equipment-cost analysis is supplied.
  • Scale-up geometry: A process demonstrated on submicrocrystals in a microscopy instrument may face different heat-transfer, beam-penetration, and gas-removal issues at larger volumes.
  • Precursor scope: Other tested hydrocarbons failed, so expanding beyond adamantane requires new chemistry rather than assuming the same reaction will transfer.
  • Product handling: The cited accounts do not establish purification, collection, storage, or surface functionalization procedures for the nanodiamonds.

Bottom line

Electron irradiation can produce nanodiamonds from adamantane submicrocrystals under a narrowly defined laboratory setup: 80–200 keV electrons, 100–296 K, vacuum, and irradiation lasting tens of seconds. Time-resolved TEM showed adamantane-derived oligomers preceding spherical cubic nanodiamonds, while a kinetic isotope effect identified C–H cleavage as rate-determining.

The scientifically defensible headline is therefore specific: electron beams can convert adamantane into nanodiamonds under specialized conditions. The result is not evidence that hydrocarbons in general behave this way, nor does it yet establish a low-cost, high-yield, industrial manufacturing process.
