AI camera traps do not have a universal “poacher detection” accuracy rate. Published systems can identify a person, animal or vehicle with high accuracy in some conditions, but they cannot determine intent, identity or whether conduct meets a legal definition of poaching. A 2024 evaluation found 93.8% person-detection accuracy at a 95% confidence threshold, with person precision as high as 99.6%; however, accuracy at individual sites ranged from 52% to 100%. The dependable use case is triage: AI ranks likely human or vehicle events for trained people to verify before rangers act.
What an AI camera trap can—and cannot—detect
A wildlife camera trap combines a motion or time-lapse camera with software that classifies the resulting image. The software may label a frame as containing a person, animal, vehicle or a particular species. Some systems transmit an alert over a cellular connection; others store classifications for later review.

“Poacher” is not a visual category in the same way as “person.” Poaching is a conclusion about behavior, authorization, location, species, equipment and applicable law. A hiker carrying a backpack may look identical to an armed trespasser in a single frame. Conversely, a poacher can be partly hidden, outside the frame or present during a period when the camera does not trigger. AI can flag evidence that merits attention, but it cannot establish intent or guilt.

What published studies actually measure
Most peer-reviewed evaluations test person detection, wildlife presence or species classification rather than poacher detection. The following figures are therefore useful for estimating the components of an anti-poaching system, not for assigning a probability that an alert is a poacher.
| Study or model | Task and result | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Mitterwallner et al. (2024) | 93.8% person-detection accuracy at a 95% confidence threshold; person precision up to 99.6% | Across study locations, site-level person accuracy ranged from 52% to 100%; the result came from 352,426 images and performance depended on threshold and site. |
| Leorna and Brinkman (2022) | At least 94.6% wildlife-presence accuracy in motion-triggered images | Time-lapse images achieved 61.6% or lower, showing that image-acquisition method strongly affects results. |
| Tabak et al., USGS MLWIC2 (2019) | 96.8% accuracy on the primary species-model evaluation | Accuracy on out-of-sample datasets varied from 36% to 91%, indicating limited geographic transfer. |
| Smith et al. (2024) | All 155 echidna images were detected | The system also produced 500 false positives, illustrating why a high detection rate can coexist with an impractical alert burden. |
Mitterwallner and colleagues concluded that “a subsequent manual classification is still unavoidable” for precise species classification, individual counting and additional attributes. They recommend a confidence threshold higher than 90% when high precision is needed for ecological studies. Enforcement decisions require at least that level of human involvement and usually more contextual evidence.
Precision, recall and the threshold trade-off
Recall: how many people are found
Recall is the proportion of actual people in the test material that the system detects. A high-recall setting is useful when missing a person is unacceptable, but it generally accepts more uncertain detections and therefore creates more false alerts.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Precision: how many alerts are correct
Precision is the proportion of person alerts that really contain a person. High precision reduces the time rangers spend reviewing vegetation, shadows and empty frames. It does not prove that the detected person is poaching.

Why the confidence setting matters
In the 2024 evaluation, person recall was highest at a 50% confidence threshold, while person precision reached 99.6% at 95%. Raising the threshold therefore makes an alert more trustworthy as a person detection but can suppress distant, obscured or poorly illuminated people. Lowering it catches more possible people while increasing review workload. The correct setting depends on whether the operation prioritizes immediate coverage, limited ranger capacity or a staged combination of both.
Conditions that make detection easier or harder
Trigger and image cadence
Motion-triggered cameras usually capture an animal or person close to the moment of movement. Time-lapse cameras take images on a schedule, so a subject can enter and leave between frames. The difference is visible in Leorna and Brinkman’s results: motion-triggered wildlife-presence accuracy was at least 94.6%, whereas time-lapse accuracy was 61.6% or lower.
Distance, size and occlusion
A person occupying a few pixels is harder to classify than one filling the frame. Branches, tall grass, rocks, fencing and other people can hide the body shape that detectors use. A camera aimed too high may capture only a head; one aimed too low may record legs without enough context.

Light and weather
Night infrared images, glare, rain, fog, snow, dust and backlighting reduce visible detail. Infrared can reveal movement while removing color and some texture cues. Test both day and night scenes at the actual mounting distance rather than assuming daytime performance transfers to darkness.

Background motion and scene change
Wind-blown vegetation, moving branches, water reflections and shifting shadows can trigger the camera or confuse the classifier. Seasonal changes matter too: leafless woodland, snow cover and summer growth produce different backgrounds from those represented in a training set.
Camera and transmission limits
Trigger delay, recovery time, battery condition, memory capacity and cellular coverage affect whether an event is recorded and delivered. A highly accurate model cannot classify an image that was never captured, nor can it alert a ranger while a camera is offline.
False positives and false negatives in the field
Common false positives
- Branches, grass, cones and shadows that resemble an animal or person.
- Blurred maintenance images, partial bodies and objects near the lens.
- Vehicles or equipment mistaken for animals, or wildlife mistaken for people.
- Repeated frames from one event counted as separate alerts.
The echidna study demonstrates the operational cost: all 155 true echidna images were found, but 500 false positives were also generated. A similar ratio in a large reserve could overwhelm a small monitoring team even though the detector appears sensitive.

Common false negatives
- Small or distant people that fall below the model’s effective size range.
- Subjects hidden by vegetation, terrain, darkness or camouflage.
- A person moving during the camera’s recovery interval or outside its field of view.
- Images degraded by condensation, dirt, low battery voltage or transmission compression.
False negatives are especially important in anti-poaching work because an empty alert queue does not demonstrate that no unauthorized person entered an area.

How to use AI alerts in an anti-poaching workflow
The strongest evidence supports a layered process rather than an autonomous enforcement decision.
- Capture: A motion-triggered or time-lapse camera records a frame, ideally with a short burst or video sequence where local law and storage allow.
- Object detection: The model filters for person, vehicle and relevant wildlife categories. Configure separate labels where the software supports them.
- Event prioritization: Rules combine the label with time, location, direction of travel, repeated sightings, vehicle presence and restricted-zone boundaries. This stage can rank a likely intrusion without calling it poaching.
- Human review: A trained reviewer checks the original image sequence, confidence score, camera health, known patrol activity and neighboring cameras. The reviewer records uncertainty rather than forcing a yes/no decision.
- Corroboration: Rangers verify through another camera, tracks, patrol observations, radio reports or other lawful evidence. One image should not be the sole basis for an arrest or public accusation.
- Response: Dispatch follows a pre-agreed protocol that accounts for staff safety, local law, weather, distance and the possibility of a false alarm.
- Audit: Store the alert, human decision, eventual outcome and image conditions. Use these labeled cases to tune thresholds and identify sites where the model fails.
A BioScience review describes a TrailGuard AI camera detecting a gang of poachers, but that report does not provide a validated sensitivity, specificity or false-alarm rate for poacher detection. It is an example of operational use, not a universal accuracy benchmark.

- False alerts per camera-day: This operational measure lets you estimate review workload and staffing.
- Latency: Measure the interval from capture to notification, including cellular upload and server processing.
- Connectivity and power: Document carrier coverage, antenna placement, battery endurance in cold weather and behavior during outages.
- Geographic transfer: Ask whether testing included local vegetation, clothing, terrain, wildlife and camera angles. The MLWIC2 results, which fell from 96.8% on the primary evaluation to 36%–91% on out-of-sample datasets, show why this matters.
- Human-review tools: Look for original-image access, confidence scores, duplicate-event grouping, audit logs and role-based permissions.
- Privacy and retention: Define who may view images of people, how long images are kept and how footage is shared with authorities, consistent with local law.
Configuring thresholds and patrol priorities
Do not choose a threshold from a product default alone. Start with a validation set collected from your own camera placements. Label people, empty frames, wildlife, vehicles and ambiguous images, then compare alert volume and missed detections at several thresholds.
Best Value
- 30MP photo & 1080P video: This mini trail camera captures 30MP clear images and full HD 1080P video during day (color) and night (black and white), ensure every details will be captured. (Included 4pcs 16GB SD cards and 16pcs AA batteries) Since the camera cannot connect to a phone, accessing photos or videos requires removing the SD card.
- Fast trigger speed: The WOSODA game camera features a trigger speed of 0.3s ensures that no details are missed, allowing for precise and fast capturing of photos or videos even in the dark.
- Low power consumption: The deer camera with night vision only need 4 AA batteries, with such a compact design, it boasts a sleek appearance and offers extended standby time under the same conditions, without the need for frequent battery replacements.
- Stealthiness: Trail cam feature a camouflage appearance, allowing it to blend better into the natural environment and avoid easy detection by target animals or others.
- Easy to Operate: These wildlife trail cameras are designed for simple setup and operation. They are ideal for a variety of outdoor applications, such as home security, property surveillance, wildlife monitoring, and farm safety.
A practical design is to use a lower threshold for internal queueing, then apply a higher threshold or a second human check before contacting a patrol. A remote camera in a high-risk corridor may justify more false alerts than a camera near a public trail where most people are authorized visitors. Keep separate rules for day and night if their error rates differ.
Review thresholds after seasonal changes, camera relocation, firmware or model updates and major changes in patrol patterns. Accuracy is not a permanent property of the hardware; it is a result of the model, scene, threshold and workflow together.
Questions to ask when an alert arrives
- Is there a person in the original frame, or only a shape flagged by the model?
- Does a burst or adjacent camera show the same event from another angle?
- Was the camera operating correctly, with accurate time and location metadata?
- Could the person be an authorized ranger, researcher, resident or visitor?
- Are there visible weapons, tools, carcasses, vehicles or restricted-zone indicators, and are those observations clear enough to record without speculation?
- What independent evidence and safe response options exist before dispatch?
Bottom line
AI camera traps are often effective at finding broad visual categories, especially people, but no published evidence establishes a universal accuracy rate for detecting poachers. The best documented person result is 93.8% accuracy at a 95% confidence threshold, with site results ranging from 52% to 100%; high precision can come at the cost of missed detections. Use AI to filter and prioritize images, retain human review and corroboration for enforcement, and validate performance under the exact night, weather, distance and connectivity conditions in which your cameras operate.
