Accessibility settings can make a confusing game easier to follow by making information clearer, adding alternative ways to receive cues, improving navigation, and giving you more control over timing and challenge. They are not universal fixes: every game exposes a different set of options, and a setting that helps one player may distract another. The most effective approach is to identify what is confusing, enable the matching option, and keep only changes that improve your understanding.
Why a game can feel confusing
Confusion is not always a matter of difficulty. A game may be hard to understand because its instructions are too small, an important sound is easy to miss, menus are difficult to operate, objectives are hard to revisit, or action happens faster than you can process it. A player may understand the intended solution but still fail to perceive the information needed to act on it.

Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guidelines treat accessibility as an information-access issue as well as an input issue. Their guidance covers text display, contrast, captions, additional cue channels, object clarity, navigation, focus handling, context, time limits, motion and difficulty. The overview page was listed as last updated on August 14, 2026. This broad scope matters because a game can be physically playable while still being difficult to interpret.
Players sometimes describe the result simply as “I can’t keep up.” That phrase can refer to reading, listening, navigating, remembering or reacting; it is an experience, not a measured statistic about how many players struggle. Start by identifying which kind of information is getting lost.

Make text, icons and visual information easier to read
Increase text and subtitle size
Look for separate controls for interface text and subtitles or captions. They often affect different information: interface text may include objectives, menus and item descriptions, while subtitles describe dialogue or other sounds. Increasing one does not necessarily enlarge the other.
God of War Ragnarök documents independent UI-text and subtitle/caption sizing. It also provides four icon-size choices. These distinctions are useful when a game’s objectives are readable but small interaction icons are not, or when dialogue is legible but menu labels are difficult to scan.
Improve contrast without assuming “maximum” is best
Contrast and color options can separate an objective marker, reticle or interactable object from a busy background. God of War Ragnarök includes color-correction options for critical in-world UI. Use the least aggressive treatment that makes the information distinct enough to recognize.
High contrast is not automatically easier for everyone. Microsoft specifically cautions that high-contrast interfaces can be difficult for some people with cognitive disabilities or reading difficulty. If a stark color scheme makes text tiring or causes visual elements to blend together, try a different correction, a larger type size or a simpler interface instead.
Clarify icons and interaction prompts
When you are unsure what an icon means, increase icon size if the game offers it and check whether interaction prompts can remain visible longer. A larger icon can help with recognition, but it does not explain an unfamiliar mechanic. Revisit the tutorial or objective description when the game provides one; visual clarity and clear context solve different problems.
Add another channel for information you are missing
Use captions for speech and non-speech audio
Captions can turn an easy-to-miss sound into visible information. Depending on the game, they may identify dialogue, environmental noises, combat sounds or directional events. God of War Ragnarök documents captions for non-speech audio as well as dialogue, but coverage is game-specific: captions do not necessarily describe every sound or every event.

When available, adjust caption size independently from UI text and check whether speaker labels, sound descriptions or directional indicators can be enabled. These details can help distinguish an objective-related cue from background noise without requiring you to raise overall volume.
Try audio cues and spoken output
Audio cues provide an additional signal for actions that might be difficult to see. In God of War Ragnarök, documented audio cues correspond to some combat and traversal actions. Such cues can confirm that an input registered or indicate that an interaction is available, but they are not a complete narration of the game world.
Screen narration is another channel. God of War Ragnarök documents narration for selected menus. This can make menu labels and focus changes easier to follow when reading the screen is difficult. Because narration may cover only selected menus, consult the game’s current accessibility documentation before relying on it throughout the entire interface.
Do not treat captions, cues and narration as interchangeable
| Option | Information channel | What it can clarify | Documented example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subtitle or caption sizing | Visual text | Dialogue and, where supported, descriptions of non-speech audio | God of War Ragnarök offers scalable subtitle/caption text |
| Audio cues | Sound | Some combat and traversal actions | God of War Ragnarök documents cues for selected actions |
| Screen narration | Spoken output | Labels and focus in selected menus | God of War Ragnarök documents narration for selected menus |
These options address different failures. Enlarging text helps when you can see the information but cannot read it; narration helps when reading the menu is the barrier; an audio cue helps when a visual prompt is easy to miss. Choose the channel that matches the problem rather than enabling everything at once.
Make menus and settings easier to reach
You cannot benefit from an accessibility option that you cannot locate or operate. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 112 states that the goal is “to provide players with clear and consistent UI navigation experiences throughout the entirety of a game.” It also warns that if a player cannot navigate menus to configure settings or select an appropriate game mode because of confusing or inconsistent components, the player can be excluded from the game from the very beginning.

At first launch, look for an accessibility prompt or an option to configure settings before starting a campaign. If you skip it, check the pause menu and the main menu for Settings or Accessibility; labels and locations vary by game, platform and edition. A predictable focus highlight, consistent button behavior and a way to return to the previous menu reduce the effort of experimenting.

When a menu is difficult to operate, change one control at a time and confirm what has changed before moving on. If the game offers suitable defaults or a first-launch setup, use those as a starting point rather than assuming the most intensive preset is best.
Find your way through levels and objectives
Use story-path or objective guidance
Getting lost is an information problem when the game does not make the next destination clear. Look for navigation assistance, a compass, objective review or a tool that points toward story progression. Microsoft’s accessibility guidance recommends that tasks and objectives be described clearly, remain reviewable and provide ways to revisit narrative information.
The Last of Us Part II documents a story-path guidance option that, when activated with a button press, turns the camera toward the story path. This does not teleport the character or solve the level; it supplies orientation when you are unsure which direction the narrative route takes.
Separate navigation help from detection help
The Last of Us Part II also documents enhanced listening for locating enemies or pickups. That serves a different purpose from story-path guidance: one points toward progression, while the other helps locate nearby objects or threats. A compass or objective marker may identify where to go without telling you what is hidden nearby.
Review tutorials and narrative information
If you forget a mechanic, return to the tutorial, objective log or narrative recap instead of repeatedly guessing. A reviewable task description can explain why a route is blocked or which ability is expected. The availability and wording of these logs differ, so use the game’s own menu labels.
Reduce movement and puzzle bottlenecks
Simplify traversal inputs
Some games offer assistance for climbing, ledge interactions or other traversal actions that normally require precise timing or a sequence of inputs. The Last of Us Part II documents simplified traversal and ledge protection. These options can reduce the number of simultaneous decisions you must make, which may make the intended route easier to understand as well as easier to execute.

Skip an optional puzzle when it blocks progress
The Last of Us Part II documents optional puzzle skipping. Skipping removes the puzzle obstacle rather than explaining its logic, so it is most useful when the puzzle itself is not the experience you want to spend time on or when it prevents access to the story. It should not be presented as a standard feature: many games do not offer it.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDistinguish an input barrier from a knowledge barrier
If you know what to do but cannot perform the required sequence, traversal or input assistance is the relevant category. If you can perform the controls but do not know the intended solution, revisit objectives, tutorials or puzzle hints first. Using an input aid for a knowledge problem may not make the game clearer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Slow down action and adjust challenge
Look for game-speed or time-limit controls
Fast action can hide the relationship between an instruction and the response it expects. Some games expose game-speed modifiers, time-limit adjustments or similar pacing controls. Xbox’s May 15, 2025 announcement for DOOM: The Dark Ages says its difficulty modifiers, including game speed, can be changed at any time during gameplay. That is a feature of that named game, not a standard control in every title.
A slower speed can give you time to read a prompt, identify a target and understand the result of an input. It may also change the feel of combat or reduce the intended pressure, so treat it as a reversible experiment. If the setting can be changed during play, adjust it for a difficult section and restore it later if you prefer the original pace.
Choose a difficulty preset that matches the barrier
Difficulty presets can alter enemy strength, damage, resources, timing or other systems. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guidelines recommend offering a wide range of challenge options, with “Ideally 4+” presets. That is a design recommendation, not evidence that four presets produce a particular comprehension result.

A practical process for choosing settings
- Open the available menu. Check the first-launch setup, pause menu and main-menu Settings or Accessibility area. Menu names and locations vary by game, platform and edition.
- Name the barrier precisely. Decide whether the problem is reading text, hearing a cue, operating menus, finding the route, remembering an objective, performing movement or keeping up with timing.
- Match the barrier to a setting. Try text or icon sizing for legibility, captions or audio cues for missed information, narration for selected menus, navigation assistance for orientation, traversal or puzzle options for bottlenecks, and speed or difficulty controls for pacing.
- Change one thing first. A single change makes it easier to tell what helped. Note the original value so you can undo it without rebuilding your setup.
- Test the setting in the situation that caused confusion. Re-read the objective, return to the route, repeat the interaction or replay the encounter. A setting is useful only if it improves that real task.
- Keep, refine or revert. Increase assistance if the information is still missing, reduce it if the screen or audio becomes distracting, or restore the original value when it no longer helps.
- Check the current official support page for exact instructions. Labels, availability and behavior can change between updates, platforms and editions.
How the main options differ
| Barrier | Useful setting type | Primary channel | Level of assistance | Possible trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instructions or prompts are too small | UI text, subtitle/caption or icon sizing | Visual | Makes existing information easier to read | Larger elements may occupy more screen space |
| A sound cue is easy to miss | Captions or audio cues | Visual or audio | Adds a second way to notice selected events | Coverage is game-specific and may add screen or sound activity |
| Menus are difficult to read or focus | Screen narration or accessible menu navigation | Spoken output or controls | Reports selected labels and focus changes | Narration may cover only selected menus |
| You cannot tell where the story continues | Story-path guidance, compass or objective review | Visual orientation | Points toward progression or makes the task reviewable | Can reduce the need to explore independently |
| Enemies or pickups are hard to locate | Enhanced listening | Audio or audio-visual detection | Helps locate selected nearby elements | It does not replace route guidance |
| Traversal inputs block progress | Simplified traversal or ledge protection | Input assistance | Reduces precision or sequence demands | Changes how movement is performed |
| A puzzle prevents progress | Optional puzzle skip | Progression assistance | Removes the puzzle obstacle | Skips the puzzle rather than teaching its solution |
| Action is too fast to process | Game speed, time-limit or difficulty modifier | Pacing and challenge | Provides more time or lowers pressure | May change timing and the intended challenge |
Limits to keep in mind
- Availability differs. A setting documented for one game is not evidence that another game, platform or edition includes it.
- Coverage differs. Captions may describe some non-speech sounds, audio cues may apply to selected actions, and narration may cover selected menus rather than the whole game.
- More assistance is not always clearer. High contrast, large overlays, frequent narration or extra cues can compete for attention. Personalization is the goal.
- Settings do not explain every mechanic. If the game lacks a clear objective or tutorial, accessibility controls may improve access to information without supplying missing design context.
- Updates can change labels and behavior. Use the current official support page for the specific title, platform and edition when you need exact button presses or menu paths.
What to do when the first change does not help
The screen is readable but the next step is still unclear
Switch from visual clarity to objective and navigation tools. Review the task description, activate a story-path aid or check whether a compass points to the active objective. Enlarging text alone cannot supply route information.
You hear sounds but cannot tell what they mean
Try captions that identify non-speech audio, then check the game’s tutorial or control explanations. An audio cue can confirm an action, but it may not explain the purpose of that action.
You know the route but cannot execute it
Look for simplified traversal, ledge protection, input assistance or a slower speed. These options address execution and timing rather than navigation.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The game becomes visually overwhelming
Undo the last change, reduce contrast intensity or choose a smaller text and icon increase. Because high contrast and additional cues do not suit everyone, evaluate the setting by whether it reduces confusion in practice, not by how strong it appears.
The useful principle: make information available in the form you can use
Accessibility settings improve understanding when they connect a specific barrier to a specific channel: readable text for visual legibility, captions or cues for missed audio, narration for selected menu information, navigation assistance for orientation, traversal aids for execution, and pacing controls for time pressure. The examples from God of War Ragnarök, The Last of Us Part II and DOOM: The Dark Ages show different solutions rather than a single universal preset.
Configure the game before frustration accumulates, test one change in the situation that caused the problem, and keep the setting only if it makes the information or action clearer. For exact controls and current availability, consult the official accessibility documentation for your game, platform and edition.
