You remove the extension tubes and floor head, then fit a task-shaped tool—such as an upholstery nozzle for furniture or a crevice nozzle for narrow gaps. The vacuum motor, hose and collection system continue operating the same way; only the working end and the way you present it to the surface change. Wet pickup, dry debris collection and spray extraction are separate operating modes, so an attachment alone does not turn every wet/dry vacuum into a carpet extractor.
What “above-floor” means on a wet/dry vacuum
A conventional floor setup is arranged as vacuum inlet and motor unit, suction hose, handle, extension pipes and a floor nozzle. An above-floor setup removes the long pipes and floor head so the hose handle, or sometimes the hose itself, carries the attachment directly. Kärcher owner instructions describe removing the handle for confined spaces and plugging accessories straight onto the suction hose. The SE 4 instructions show upholstery and crevice nozzles fitted to the hose handle.

This arrangement shortens the suction path you hold, making it easier to work on sofas, car interiors, shelves, stairs, baseboards and tight cavities. The nozzle opening controls how you place the airflow against the surface. A narrow opening concentrates access into a gap; a wider upholstery opening presents a broader contact area. Those are geometric and handling effects, not promises of a particular suction increase, cleaning time or allergen-removal result.
How the airflow path changes when you switch tools
- Prepare the vacuum. Keep the motor and collection container in their normal operating position and connect the suction hose to the vacuum inlet.
- Remove the floor assembly. Detach the extension pipes and floor nozzle from the hose handle. On models that permit it, remove the handle and connect the accessory directly to the hose.
- Fit the task tool. Slide the upholstery, crevice or other approved attachment onto the handle or hose connector. The exact locking collar and diameter are model-specific.
- Present the opening to the surface. Move the nozzle slowly enough for the intake to collect the material without forcing the tool into fabric, trim or a fragile edge.
- Return to the floor setup when finished. Refit the handle, tubes and floor head according to the vacuum’s manual.
Removing the long tubes does not create a second motor or a separate suction circuit. It simply puts the same hose airflow where your hand can control it. A tool can therefore improve access to a particular surface while still being limited by the vacuum’s filter condition, hose diameter, seals and collection system.

Upholstery and crevice tools: what happens at the surface
Upholstery nozzles
An upholstery nozzle gives the hose a contact opening shaped for furniture and similar fabric-covered areas. Keep the tool moving and use the lightest pressure that maintains contact. On a dry-vacuum setting it collects loose dust, crumbs, hair and other dry debris that the vacuum is approved to handle. The manuals establish the attachment and its intended furniture or car-interior use, but they do not provide a measured deep-cleaning rate or guarantee removal of embedded soil.
Crevice nozzles
A crevice nozzle trades a broad opening for access into narrow joints, seat seams, radiator gaps, window tracks and the edges where a wider tool cannot sit. The narrow tip does not make the vacuum universally stronger; it changes where the intake can be positioned. If the opening is blocked by lint or a large object, airflow falls and the tool may stop collecting effectively.

Dry pickup, wet pickup and spray extraction are different operations
Dry vacuuming
Dry mode collects approved dry debris through the hose and filter arrangement specified by the manufacturer. A switchable floor nozzle may expose brush strips for hard floors or retract them for carpets, while an above-floor nozzle provides a smaller, task-shaped opening. Use only the inserts and filters listed for your model.
Wet pickup
Wet pickup draws water or damp debris into the collection container. Kärcher’s WD instructions explicitly say, “Do not use a filter bag when vacuuming wet.” The same manual describes a float switch that closes the suction opening when the container is full; when that happens, switch off the device and empty it. These are model-family instructions, so check your own manual for filter, float and container requirements before collecting liquid.

Spray extraction
A spray-extraction machine adds a solution tank, spray hose and delivery function to suction. Kärcher’s SE 4 instructions treat spraying and suction as separate functions and provide dedicated floor and upholstery tools. Before using that mode on fabric, test an inconspicuous area for colorfastness and water resistance. A plain wet/dry vacuum with an upholstery nozzle can collect loose dry material or approved liquid, but it does not gain solution delivery merely because the tool touches upholstery.
Compatibility: why an attachment may not fit
Connectors, locking collars, hose diameters and accessory families differ between manufacturers and model generations. RIDGID describes an NXT accessory ecosystem and notes that tools are not included with every vacuum model. Before buying a replacement or an extra nozzle, identify the complete model designation printed on the vacuum and compare it with the accessory’s compatibility list.

- Check the physical connection: confirm whether the tool fits the hose, handle or a particular floor head.
- Check the intended medium: dry-only, wet pickup, or spray extraction are not interchangeable labels.
- Check the surface: upholstery, narrow gaps, smooth floors and carpets can require different openings or inserts.
- Check the accessory system: a replaceable wet shoe or car-nozzle shoe may be limited to one model family.
- Check what is included: a vacuum’s box contents do not prove that every accessory in the manufacturer’s catalog is supplied.
If a listing uses the phrase “wet dry vacuum upholstery nozzle,” treat that as a product category, not evidence of universal fit. Match the connector and model first.

- Read the model manual. Wet/dry and spray-extraction instructions can differ even within one manufacturer.
- Choose the correct collection setup. For the documented Kärcher WD family, wet vacuuming is performed without a filter bag. Do not transfer that rule to another model without checking its instructions.
- Inspect the hose and tool. Remove lodged debris, verify that seals are seated and make sure the attachment is fully engaged.
- Use the correct insert. Fit brush strips, a squeegee or a wet shoe only where the manual identifies that part for the surface and medium.
- Monitor the container. If the float closes suction or the machine changes sound while collecting liquid, switch off and empty the container as directed.
- For spray extraction, test first. On the SE 4 procedure, check an inconspicuous area for colorfastness and water resistance before applying solution broadly.
Troubleshooting weak suction or poor pickup
The tool has little or no airflow
Start at the attachment: a wad of hair, lint or a large object can block a narrow opening. Disconnect power as directed by the manual, remove the obstruction and refit the tool. If the nozzle is clear, inspect the hose and suction tubes for a second blockage.

Suction falls during wet pickup
A full collection container can trigger the float switch on Kärcher WD models, closing the suction opening. Turn the device off and empty the container. Do not continue running it while the float is closed.
Pickup remains weak after clearing the hose
Kärcher’s WD troubleshooting guidance identifies a clogged accessory, hose or suction tube, and a dirty filter, as causes of reduced suction. Check each location in that order, then reinstall only the filter and accessories approved for the vacuum. A damaged seal or incompatible tool can also prevent the connection from closing correctly; consult the model manual rather than forcing the fitting.

What the manuals do—and do not—establish
The manufacturer documents establish the connection method, intended attachment tasks, wet-use preparation and model-specific warnings. They do not provide a universal suction measurement, pickup-rate comparison, cleaning-time test or allergen-removal statistic for these attachments. Performance will depend on the vacuum, hose length, filter condition, material, blockage and operator technique, so a nozzle’s shape should not be presented as a laboratory performance guarantee.
The Kärcher WD/KWD and SE 4 manuals and the RIDGID NXT owner manual are model-specific documents. The official pages and PDFs used for these instructions were accessed on October 10, 2026; the RIDGID PDF carries an embedded date of April 29, 2024. Parts availability and connector designs can change, so confirm the current manual and fit for the exact vacuum before ordering.
