They move primarily with utilization: as more of a reserve is borrowed, the available liquidity falls and the borrow rate rises. Aave v3 uses a two-slope curve, so borrowing costs increase much faster once utilization passes the reserve’s optimal utilization point. Suppliers receive the borrower interest allocated to them after the reserve factor, while separate incentive programs can add rewards or borrowing discounts.
There is no universal or guaranteed “Aave stablecoin rate.” The same token can have different settings on different markets and networks. For a meaningful comparison, select the exact reserve, chain and market, then check its current supply APY, borrow APY, utilization, available liquidity, caps, incentives and historical APY.

What an Aave stablecoin reserve is
Aave treats each supported token in a liquidity pool as a reserve. A reserve is not simply “the USDC rate” or “the stablecoin rate”: it is one token configured for one Aave market on one network. Governance can set different parameters for otherwise identical tokens, so a reserve’s rates, caps, collateral settings and incentive programs may differ between markets. The Reserve documentation explains these parameters and the way utilization affects them.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen you supply a stablecoin, you add liquidity to that reserve and receive a corresponding aToken. The aToken balance represents your claim on the supplied liquidity and accrues the reserve’s current supply interest. When you borrow, Aave records your debt with a variable debt token; that balance accrues the current variable borrow rate. Both rates can change while a position remains open.

A displayed APY is therefore a snapshot of the reserve’s current conditions, not a fixed promise for the year ahead. Utilization can change block by block as users supply, borrow or repay, and governance can update reserve parameters. The Supply Tokens guide describes supply interest as dynamic.
How utilization drives the borrow-rate curve
Utilization measures how much of a reserve’s available liquidity is currently borrowed. Higher utilization means less unborrowed liquidity remains for withdrawals and new loans. Aave’s interest-rate strategy raises the variable borrow rate as utilization rises. The Interest Rate Strategy documentation describes a base rate and two slopes around an optimal utilization point.
Below the optimal utilization point
When utilization is below the reserve’s optimal point, the borrow rate increases along the first slope. A small increase in borrowing still raises the rate, but the change is comparatively gradual. This part of the curve is intended to keep borrowing available while compensating suppliers for the liquidity being used.

Above the optimal utilization point
Once utilization exceeds the optimal point, the rate moves along a much steeper second slope. The purpose is to discourage additional borrowing and encourage repayments or new supply when the reserve is close to being fully used. Aave’s official overview states that “v3 uses an interest rate model based on two slopes and an optimal utilization point: below the optimal point, borrow rates rise with the first slope; above it, they rise faster.”
The exact optimal point, base rate and slope values belong to the individual reserve’s configuration. Do not take one stablecoin’s curve as a model for another reserve, even when both are on Aave v3. Parameter details can also change through governance.

Why a rate can jump without a governance vote
Utilization is driven by user activity, so a large borrow, a wave of repayments or a liquidity withdrawal can move the rate without any parameter change. If a reserve crosses its optimal utilization point, the steeper portion of the curve applies immediately. A borrower who leaves a variable-rate position open can therefore see a materially different cost later, even if the collateral and debt amount have not changed.
Why supply APY is usually lower than borrow APY
Borrowers pay interest to use reserve liquidity. Suppliers receive the portion of that interest allocated to depositors, while the reserve factor directs a share to the protocol’s market treasury. This is why the supply rate is not simply identical to the gross borrow rate. The Aave V3 overview and Interest Rate Strategy documentation describe the reserve factor and rate calculation.
Recommended Free Tools
At a high level, the relationship depends on three things:
- Utilization: more borrowed liquidity generally means more borrower interest is generated for suppliers, but it also leaves less immediately available liquidity.
- The reserve factor: the configured share sent to the market treasury is not paid to suppliers.
- The reserve’s rate parameters: the base rate and two slopes determine the borrow curve, while the reserve’s configuration determines how that borrower interest is allocated.
The supply APY shown for a reserve should therefore be read as the current base lending return under that reserve’s conditions. It is not a guaranteed net return, and it does not include every possible reward unless the interface explicitly combines them.
Base APY versus incentives
Aave markets can run separate supply and borrow incentive programs. A supply incentive may distribute an additional reward to suppliers; a borrow incentive may provide a reward or borrowing discount. These programs have their own eligibility rules, assets, rates and durations. The Aave Incentive Programs documentation treats them separately from the underlying interest-rate model.

Which reserve data to compare
Aave’s Market Data documentation lists the reserve fields needed for a current comparison. Use the same market and network for every candidate reserve; otherwise you may be comparing different risk and rate configurations.
| Metric | What it tells you | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Supply APY | The current interest rate accruing to supplied liquidity | It is a dynamic snapshot, not a locked yield for a future holding period. |
| Borrow APY | The current variable rate charged to borrowers | It determines the ongoing cost of a variable debt position and can rise as utilization changes. |
| Utilization | The share of reserve liquidity currently borrowed | It shows where the reserve sits on its two-slope curve and how close it may be to the steeper region. |
| Available liquidity | Liquidity still unborrowed in the reserve | It affects whether a supplier can withdraw immediately and whether a new borrow can be executed. |
| Supply and borrow caps | Governance limits on how much can be supplied or borrowed | A cap can prevent a transaction even when the displayed APY looks attractive. |
| Incentives | Separate rewards or discounts attached to the reserve | They may have conditions, assets or end dates that differ from the base APY. |
| Historical APY | Past supply and borrow-rate observations | It provides context for volatility but does not forecast the next rate. |
| Collateral settings | Whether supplied liquidity can support borrowing and under what risk parameters | These settings affect a borrower’s ability to withdraw collateral and avoid liquidation. |
How to check a stablecoin reserve before supplying or borrowing
- Select the exact market and network. Start with the Aave market data for the chain and market you intend to use. Do not rely on a rate copied from another network or deployment.
- Open the specific stablecoin reserve. Confirm the token symbol and reserve, then record the current supply APY, borrow APY, utilization and available liquidity.
- Locate the optimal-utilization context. Determine whether current utilization is below or above the reserve’s optimal point. A reserve near or above that point is in the steeper part of the borrow curve.
- Check caps and enablement. Verify that supplying and borrowing are enabled and that supply or borrow caps leave room for your transaction.
- Separate base rates from rewards. Read the incentive details and conditions instead of adding a reward to the base APY automatically.
- Review historical APY. Use the historical data to see how variable the reserve has been. It is context, not a promised average.
- Recheck immediately before signing. A large transaction by another user can change utilization and the displayed rate between your first review and confirmation.
Why Aave USDC and other stablecoin rates change
Different markets and networks
The same underlying stablecoin can be configured differently across Aave markets and chains. Each reserve has its own parameter set, liquidity profile and governance history. A rate observed on one deployment cannot be generalized to every deployment of that token.
Borrowing demand
When borrowers draw liquidity, utilization rises and the variable borrow rate follows the curve. Repayments reduce utilization and can move the rate back down. The resulting supply APY also changes because supplier interest is linked to borrower interest after the reserve factor.

Liquidity withdrawals and supply growth
New supply increases available liquidity and can lower utilization, all else equal. Withdrawals remove liquidity and can increase utilization if the borrowed amount is unchanged. A reserve may show a healthy APY while having limited instantly withdrawable liquidity if most of its balance is borrowed.
Governance changes
Aave governance can change reserve parameters, caps, collateral settings or incentives. Such a change can alter the curve or the practical ability to supply, borrow or withdraw without any change in the token’s market price.
Incentive schedules
Rewards and discounts can make the displayed total return or effective borrowing cost look different from the base interest rate. Because programs can vary by reserve and time, inspect the program terms whenever you include incentives in a decision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What suppliers actually receive
Supplying a stablecoin mints aTokens that accrue interest at the reserve’s current supply rate. The return is generated by borrower interest allocated to suppliers, not by a fixed coupon. If utilization falls, the supply rate can fall with it. If the reserve is subject to a cap or supplying is disabled, additional deposits may be blocked even though existing aTokens continue to represent the supplied position.
Withdrawals depend on unborrowed reserve liquidity. A high-utilization reserve may not have enough immediately available liquidity for every supplier to exit at once. If your supplied stablecoin is also being used as collateral for an active borrow, withdrawing it can reduce your collateral and affect your health factor; the protocol may reject a withdrawal that would make the position unsafe.
Best Value
What borrowers actually pay
Aave borrowing is overcollateralized. You supply eligible collateral, borrow against it and receive a variable debt token representing the outstanding debt. The debt balance and its interest change as the variable borrow rate changes.
Borrowers must monitor both the debt cost and collateral health. Aave states that a health factor below 1 makes a position eligible for liquidation. A lower health factor can result from a higher debt balance, a higher borrow rate, a fall in collateral value or a change in risk parameters. Borrowing at a temporarily low APY does not remove this liquidation risk.
Before borrowing, check the reserve’s collateral settings and your position’s health factor. Leave a margin rather than assuming the current borrow APY or collateral price will remain unchanged.
Liquidity, peg and smart-contract risks
A stablecoin label does not guarantee a stable market price, continuous redemption or uninterrupted protocol access. A displayed APY also does not guarantee a profit. Suppliers and borrowers remain exposed to stablecoin-peg risk, reserve liquidity risk, smart-contract risk and changes to protocol parameters. The rate model addresses how interest responds to utilization; it does not insure the token, the pool or your wallet.
Liquidity risk is practical as well as theoretical: a supplier may need to wait for borrowers to repay before enough reserve liquidity is available for a withdrawal. Borrowers face the additional possibility of liquidation when their health factor falls below 1. These risks should be evaluated separately from the attractiveness of a quoted APY.
A simple way to interpret a rate change
Imagine a reserve operating below its optimal utilization point. A new borrower increases utilization, so the borrow APY rises along the first slope and the supply APY adjusts as borrower interest changes. If further borrowing pushes utilization above the optimal point, the second, steeper slope applies. The next borrower therefore faces a faster increase in borrowing cost than the earlier borrower, while suppliers may see a higher current supply rate.
If several borrowers then repay, utilization moves down and both rates can decline. Nothing about this sequence requires a fixed annual rate or a guaranteed yield; it is the expected behavior of a utilization-based model.

- Compare the same stablecoin reserve on the same network and market.
- Record supply APY, borrow APY, utilization and available liquidity at the time of the decision.
- Check whether utilization is near the optimal point and recognize that rates can accelerate above it.
- Read supply and borrow caps before sending a transaction.
- Separate base interest from incentives, and verify each incentive’s conditions and duration.
- Use historical APY to understand past changes, never as a promised future rate.
- For a borrow, monitor variable debt and health factor; below 1 is liquidation-eligible.
- For a supply, confirm that withdrawal liquidity and collateral effects fit your plan.
- Account for stablecoin, smart-contract, liquidity and governance risks independently of APY.
Bottom line
Aave stablecoin supply APYs and borrow rates are market-specific outputs of a utilization-based model. Borrow rates rise along a two-slope curve and become steeper above optimal utilization. Supplier interest comes from borrower payments after the reserve factor, while incentives are separate and conditional. Check the exact reserve’s live data, liquidity, caps, collateral settings and incentive terms, and treat every displayed APY as variable rather than guaranteed.
