A weaker U.S. dollar generally buys less foreign currency. That can make a hotel, meal, or other overseas purchase cost more in dollars. For investments held in foreign currencies, a weaker dollar can increase their dollar-translated value if those currencies strengthen against it—but it does not guarantee a gain. The destination’s exchange rate, an investment’s local-market performance, and transaction costs all matter.
What does a weaker dollar mean for a trip abroad?
It means one U.S. dollar exchanges for fewer units of a particular foreign currency than before. If a hotel or meal is priced in that currency, its dollar-equivalent cost rises, all else equal. The actual effect depends on the destination currency and the rate applied when you make or settle the purchase—not simply on whether a broad dollar index has fallen.

For example, suppose a meal costs 100 units of a foreign currency. If $1 buys 10 units, the meal converts to $10 before fees. If $1 later buys 8 units, the same meal converts to $12.50. These are illustrative rates, not current quotes or a forecast; local prices and payment charges can also change.

The Federal Reserve’s broad dollar index weights currencies of major U.S. trading partners, so it provides context about the dollar overall. It does not tell you the exact rate for a specific destination. The Fed generally reports foreign-currency units per U.S. dollar: under that convention, fewer units per dollar indicate a weaker dollar against that currency, while more units indicate a stronger dollar. Check the table heading and any currency-specific exception before interpreting a figure. The Fed’s G.5 release reports monthly rates, not live quotes.

The Fed’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report described the broad dollar index as modestly higher on net since the beginning of 2026 through its reporting period, despite volatility; the figure’s data ended July 2, 2026. That is a dated description, not a live reading or a claim about the dollar’s status today. For a trip, check the destination’s bilateral rate near the time of payment.
Card conversion can change the final cost
For a foreign-currency card transaction, the card network converts the amount to dollars when it processes the transaction. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says networks use a government-mandated or wholesale rate in effect at that time; the rate and timing may therefore differ from what you saw when you paid. Your issuer may also charge a foreign-transaction fee, depending on your account terms. Review your current card agreement for both the conversion method and any fee rather than assuming all cards work alike. See the CFPB’s foreign-transaction fee explanation and Regulation Z, § 1026.52.

How can a weaker dollar affect international investments?
For a U.S. investor with an unhedged foreign-currency exposure, currency translation is one part of the return. The dollar value of a foreign holding depends on both its value in the foreign currency and the exchange rate used to convert it. If the foreign currency strengthens against the dollar, a given foreign-currency amount converts to more dollars; if it weakens, it converts to fewer.
That translation effect can add to or subtract from a security’s local-market result. A foreign stock may rise in its home market but still be worth less in dollars if its currency falls enough against the dollar. Conversely, currency gains can be outweighed by a decline in the investment’s local price. The SEC summarizes the relationship plainly: exchange-rate changes can increase or reduce an investment return. See Investor.gov’s overview of international investing.

Where U.S. investors may encounter foreign exposure
International exposure can come through American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), U.S.-registered mutual funds or ETFs, foreign stocks traded in the United States, or shares bought directly on foreign markets. An ADR represents foreign shares or a fraction or multiple of shares; its price reflects the home-market share price adjusted for the ADR-to-share ratio. A fund may provide broader diversification than a single foreign holding, but the actual exposure, costs, and risks depend on the product.
Do not assume every international fund is unhedged or that currency changes dominate its return. A fund’s prospectus is the place to check its current holdings, currency-hedging policy, fees, and stated risks.

Currency is only one investment risk
International investments can also involve higher transaction costs, additional taxes such as dividend withholding, differences in disclosure and accounting practices, less liquidity, political and legal risks, and possible foreign-currency controls. Company information may be harder to obtain or compare. Consider these alongside currency exposure rather than treating a weaker dollar as a standalone buy signal. The SEC discusses these issues in its international-investing guidance.

How should you interpret dollar data?
First identify what the number measures: a bilateral exchange rate, a trade-weighted index, or a rate recorded for a particular date or period. Then check the quote convention. The Fed’s broad index is useful for overall context, but the exchange rate for the currency you will spend or the currency exposure in your holding is more directly relevant.

The dollar’s value is set in foreign-exchange markets; the Federal Reserve and Treasury do not target a particular exchange-rate level. The Fed states this in its FAQ on what determines the value of the dollar, updated July 11, 2024.
The dollar’s international role does not predict the cost of a particular trip or the return on a particular investment. In a 2024 speech, Federal Reserve Governor Christopher J. Waller said about 60 percent of international banking loans and deposits are denominated in dollars, as are about 70 percent of international debt securities issued in a currency other than the issuer’s home currency. Those figures describe dollar use in international finance, not the likely size or direction of a traveler’s costs or an investor’s returns. See Waller’s 2024 speech.
