The hives did not signal or cause the aneurysm: CBS Miami reported that the two were unrelated. The unexpected imaging finding led to follow-up monitoring, then treatment after a later scan showed the aneurysm had grown.
Why did Hernandez go to the emergency room?
Local news reports say Hernandez, a South Florida mother, went to Baptist Hospital’s emergency room after developing unexplained, persistent hives. She also had a severe migraine and elevated blood pressure. During the evaluation, imaging unexpectedly revealed a brain aneurysm.

The reports do not provide a complete medical record or specify which imaging studies were performed. They do establish the key distinction: the hives prompted an emergency visit, but CBS Miami reported that they were unrelated to the aneurysm. Hives are not presented in these reports as a warning sign or screening clue for aneurysms.
What did doctors find, and why did the plan change?
According to Local 10, the aneurysm was in the basilar artery, a major blood vessel at the back of the brain. CBS Miami reported that clinicians initially recommended routine monitoring because it was small. A follow-up test two months later showed significant growth. Interventional neuroradiologist Dr. Guilherme Dabus said the team was concerned enough to admit Hernandez for treatment the next day.

The reports do not give the aneurysm’s exact measurements, the imaging details, or the full clinical reasoning behind the treatment decision. Hernandez’s case therefore cannot establish what another patient with an unruptured aneurysm should do. The news coverage describes a change in management after growth was seen; it does not provide a rule for deciding when monitoring should give way to treatment.
How was the aneurysm treated?
The reports describe a catheter-based procedure performed from inside a blood vessel. Local 10 says the aneurysm is now completely closed and Hernandez has returned to activities she enjoys. The coverage does not provide procedural details or long-term follow-up information.

Hernandez told CBS Miami, “I’m very grateful to be here.” Her gratitude was about the unexpected discovery and treatment—not evidence that hives are a useful way to detect aneurysms.

What does the case mean for other people?
An aneurysm can be found incidentally during imaging done for another reason. Dabus told CBS Miami that most unruptured aneurysms do not cause symptoms and are found through imaging studies. The report also says many small unruptured aneurysms can be monitored; finding one does not automatically mean a procedure is needed. Clinicians assess the individual case, and this coverage does not provide enough clinical detail to turn Hernandez’s experience into treatment advice.

CBS Miami attributed an estimate of 2% to 3% of the population having a brain aneurysm to Dabus; its headline also gave an estimate of “1 in 50 Americans” with an undetected aneurysm. The report did not identify the original statistical source, so these should be understood as figures attributed to the physician in that news coverage, not as independently verified estimates here.
Dabus also advised controlling blood pressure and avoiding smoking, as reported by CBS Miami. A blood pressure monitor measures blood pressure only: it does not screen for, diagnose, or prevent a brain aneurysm. Hernandez’s story is not a reason for everyone with hives to seek brain imaging.
