How a Strong U.S. Dollar Affects Travel, Shopping, and Investments

A stronger U.S. dollar generally gives Americans more purchasing power in countries whose currencies have weakened against it. The same appreciation can reduce the dollar cost of some imports, make U.S. exports less competitive, and change the dollar value of foreign investments and liabilities. None of those outcomes is automatic: local inflation, company pricing, fees, asset prices, income and the time period all matter.

“Strong” is always relative. It must be measured against a specific currency or index over a stated period. The available evidence does not establish that the dollar is currently strong against any particular currency on October 13, 2026, so current decisions should use a dated exchange-rate quote or index rather than a general headline.

What a “strong dollar” actually means

The dollar is strong when it has appreciated relative to another currency or a stated basket over a defined period. A quote such as 1 U.S. dollar buying more euros than it did previously describes a bilateral exchange rate. A trade-weighted or real exchange-rate index measures something different: performance against multiple trading partners, sometimes adjusted for relative prices.

Exchange values are set in foreign-exchange markets. The Federal Reserve explains that “The value of the dollar is determined in foreign exchange markets, and neither the U.S. Treasury nor the Federal Reserve targets a level for the exchange rate.” Dollar movements nevertheless affect U.S. prices and economic activity and are considered by policymakers. That distinction prevents a common error: a dollar can rise against one currency while falling against another, and a broad index can move differently from a traveler’s destination currency. Always identify the currency pair or index, whether the measure is nominal or real, and the start and end dates.

Travel: more foreign-currency buying power, not a guaranteed cheaper trip

How the benefit works

If the dollar appreciates against a destination’s currency, exchanging the same number of dollars produces more local currency, all else equal. A U.S. traveler may therefore afford more meals, hotel nights, admissions or ground transport in local-currency terms. The 2023 Economic Report of the President describes the mechanism this way: “This is because when the dollar is strong, as explained above, it has more value in foreign currency terms, making travel budgets go further and thus incentivizing increased spending on hotels, restaurants, and other goods and services by Americans abroad.” Economic Report of the President, 2023, Chapter 3

The reverse affects inbound tourism. The report says, “The opposite effect makes travel in the United States more expensive for foreign visitors.” A visitor whose home currency buys fewer dollars may cut spending, shorten a stay or choose another destination.

Why the exchange rate is only one part of your bill

Your actual trip cost also depends on:

  • Airfares and fuel surcharges, which are often priced well before travel and may not move with the exchange rate.
  • Local inflation and seasonal hotel or restaurant pricing.
  • Foreign transaction fees, dynamic currency conversion, ATM charges and cash-exchange spreads.
  • When you pay: a reservation charged months before departure can use a different rate from the rate on the day you arrive.
  • Taxes, resort fees, tips and cancellation terms that are unrelated to currency conversion.

A stronger dollar can offset some of these costs, but it does not guarantee a lower total in dollars. Compare the final local-currency price, the card or bank conversion rate, and every fee rather than relying on a headline exchange rate.

A practical travel comparison

Question What to check Why it matters
Destination currency How many units one dollar buys on the booking or payment date Determines your basic local-currency purchasing power
Conversion cost Foreign transaction fee, ATM fee and exchange spread Can erase part of the apparent currency gain
Price movement Current hotel, food and transport prices in local currency Local inflation can outweigh exchange-rate savings
Payment timing Rate applied when you reserve, pay or withdraw cash Rates can change between planning and travel

What the 2022 episode does—and does not—show

The 2023 presidential report says the Federal Reserve’s broad real dollar index rose 10.7 percent from January 2022 to its October 2022 peak and ended December 2022 up 5.4 percent year over year. The report also says the dollar’s strength was only one of several forces shaping 2022 trade patterns and was “likely” to have contributed to the relative rebound of imports over exports of travel services. Those figures describe a historical episode, not a promise about today’s travel prices.

Shopping: imported goods can cost fewer dollars, but retail pass-through is uneven

The import-price mechanism

When the dollar appreciates, a product priced in a foreign currency can translate into fewer dollars before other changes are considered. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes appreciation as producing a lower effective dollar price for imported goods, while depreciation translates into higher import prices. BLS discussion of dollar appreciation and import prices

That is a cost mechanism, not a promise that every shelf price falls immediately. A retailer may have bought inventory earlier, locked in a supplier’s price, hedged currency exposure or kept the difference as margin. Shipping, labor, tariffs, energy, financing and domestic demand can move in the opposite direction.

Why exchange-rate changes do not pass through one-for-one

The Bureau of Economic Analysis notes that foreign suppliers may not fully pass currency changes through to their prices and that domestic sellers may absorb some changes. Import prices and import volumes can also move in different directions. A cheaper dollar cost per unit can encourage more purchases, while weaker demand or supply constraints can limit the quantity imported. BEA explanation of dollar effects in the GDP accounts

International invoicing adds another layer. Many contracts are denominated in dollars, so a currency move may initially change a supplier’s home-currency revenue rather than the U.S. invoice. Firms can then adjust prices at different speeds. For a shopper, the only reliable test is the current delivered retail price, not the exchange rate alone.

How to assess an imported purchase

  1. Identify where the product is made and the currency used in the supplier’s contract. A product sold by a foreign-owned company is not necessarily priced in that country’s currency.
  2. Compare the current shelf price with earlier prices, including shipping, tax and any import charge.
  3. Check whether the seller has announced a price change or whether inventory was purchased before the dollar move.
  4. Compare equivalent domestic and imported products on specifications and total cost, not sticker price alone.

U.S. exporters and the wider economy

Why exporters can face pressure

A stronger dollar raises the foreign-currency price of a U.S.-produced good when the U.S. seller does not reduce its dollar price. Overseas buyers may switch to local or third-country suppliers, postpone orders or buy fewer units. U.S. companies competing with imports can also face pressure when foreign goods become cheaper in dollar terms.

Consumers and companies that buy imported inputs may benefit from lower effective costs. Exporters, tourism businesses serving foreign visitors and domestic producers competing directly with imports may not. The distribution depends on each firm’s contracts, hedging, supply chain and ability to change prices.

Why the trade result is not one-way

Trade balances and output respond to both prices and quantities. Currency invoicing, available substitutes, trading partners’ currency movements, contracts and production capacity can offset or amplify the initial price effect. The BEA’s explanation of dollar depreciation shows that export stimulus, import-volume changes and import-cost effects can pull in different directions; appreciation should be analyzed as the reverse-direction mechanism with the same caution.

Do not turn a stronger dollar into a guaranteed forecast of lower inflation, a larger trade deficit or weaker growth. It can reduce the dollar cost of some imports while making U.S. exports less competitive, but the final macroeconomic result depends on how households, firms and foreign buyers respond.

Investments: currency translation can change returns even when foreign prices do not

Two sources of an international investment’s dollar return

An international holding has at least two moving parts: the asset’s price and income in its local market, and the exchange rate used to translate that result into dollars. If a foreign share rises 8 percent in its home currency but that currency falls 10 percent against the dollar, a U.S. investor’s dollar result can be negative before fees and taxes. If the foreign asset is unchanged locally but its currency strengthens against the dollar, the translated value can rise.

The same translation applies to foreign-currency liabilities. A stronger dollar can reduce the dollar value of a debt denominated in a currency that has weakened, while a weaker dollar can increase it. Funds and companies may hedge some or all of this exposure; an unhedged holding generally leaves more of the currency movement in the investor’s result.

Aggregate evidence from 2026 Q1

The Bureau of Economic Analysis reported that U.S. foreign assets increased by $462.9 billion in the first quarter of 2026. Financial transactions added $527.3 billion to U.S. residents’ foreign assets, but exchange-rate changes of –$357.1 billion partly offset that increase. These are national-accounting totals, not the return of a typical household portfolio. BEA, U.S. International Transactions and Investment Position, Q1 2026

Q1 2026 BEA measure Reported amount How to interpret it
Change in U.S. foreign assets $462.9 billion Aggregate increase during the quarter
Financial transactions increasing those assets $527.3 billion Purchases and other transactions before valuation offsets
Exchange-rate changes –$357.1 billion Currency valuation effect that partly offset the increase

What the dollar’s international role means for investors

The Congressional Budget Office links global demand for dollars and dollar-denominated assets to both the dollar’s foreign-exchange value and asset-market value. It also concludes that the dollar’s international role has contributed to persistent U.S. trade deficits and, by lowering interest rates, increased access to credit for U.S. households, businesses and the federal government. That is macroeconomic context, not a recommendation to buy or sell a security. CBO Working Paper 2023-04

The Federal Reserve’s 2025 review reported that the dollar represented 58 percent of disclosed global official foreign-exchange reserves in 2024. It also reported that foreign investors held $9 trillion, or 32 percent, of marketable U.S. Treasury securities outstanding in 2025 Q1. Reserve share and Treasury ownership measure international use of dollar assets; neither is an exchange-rate forecast. Federal Reserve, International Role of the U.S. Dollar—2025 Edition

Questions to ask before judging an investment impact

  • What percentage of the asset’s revenue, earnings or holdings comes from foreign markets?
  • Is the exposure to a foreign currency direct, or do the company’s contracts and costs offset it?
  • Is a fund currency-hedged, and what are the hedge costs and reset rules?
  • What happened to the local asset price and income separately from the exchange rate?
  • Is the relevant horizon a day, a quarter or many years? Short-term currency moves can dominate one period and matter less over another.

Who tends to benefit and who faces pressure?

Group Potential effect of a stronger dollar Main qualification
U.S. travelers abroad More local currency per dollar Airfares, local prices and conversion fees can offset savings
Buyers of imported goods or inputs Lower effective dollar cost before other factors Retailers and suppliers may not pass through the change
U.S. exporters Higher foreign-currency prices and weaker competitiveness Contracts, hedges and foreign pricing can soften the effect
U.S. businesses competing with imports More pressure from cheaper foreign alternatives Product differentiation and domestic demand matter
Investors with unhedged foreign assets Foreign-currency depreciation can reduce dollar-measured value Local asset gains, dividends and hedge design also determine returns
Foreign visitors to the United States U.S. travel can become more expensive in their currency Their own currency and local prices determine the final decision

How to use exchange-rate information without overclaiming

  1. Name the comparison. Record the currency pair or index, such as a destination currency or a broad real exchange-rate index.
  2. Date the observation. Note the quote date and whether you are comparing a day, month, year or a historical peak.
  3. Separate price from quantity. For travel and shopping, distinguish the exchange rate from the local price and the number of units purchased.
  4. Include friction. Add card spreads, fees, taxes, shipping, hedging costs and timing differences.
  5. Model both directions. Ask who gains from cheaper imports and who loses from less competitive exports; do not count only one side.
  6. For investments, decompose the result. Calculate local-market performance, income and currency translation separately before judging the dollar effect.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • “Strong” means strong everywhere. No: it is always relative to a named currency or basket and a period.
  • A stronger dollar makes every imported product cheaper. No: pass-through can be delayed or incomplete, and domestic costs can rise.
  • A stronger dollar guarantees a better vacation. No: exchange savings can be outweighed by airfare, local inflation and fees.
  • Foreign investments automatically lose. No: foreign asset prices and income may rise enough to offset currency translation.
  • Historical 2022 figures describe today. No: the 11.4 percent BLS dollar-index rise from early 2022 to September 27, 2022, and the CEA’s 10.7 percent broad real-index rise to October 2022 are dated episode measures, not current readings.

Bottom line for a U.S. household

A stronger dollar is usually favorable for the purchasing-power side of foreign travel and imports, while it can be difficult for exporters and for unhedged foreign holdings when foreign currencies weaken. The practical outcome depends on the destination or supplier currency, the local price, fees, payment timing, asset performance and the period measured. Use a dated exchange-rate quote, then calculate the complete price or return instead of treating “strong dollar” as a guarantee.
