A 2018 experimental coating combined a self-healing soft layer with a harder, scratch-resistant surface. Chemistry World’s headline compared the material with teeth, but its report gives no toughness measurement or numerical tooth benchmark, so the phrase should not be read as a measured equivalence.
What the coating is made of
The researchers designed a layered material inspired by skin: a softer, repair-capable region beneath a protective outer surface. Its inner layer mixes tannic acid and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), forming a dynamic network held together by hydrogen bonds. The outer layer is PVA containing graphene oxide nanosheets, which provide the harder surface.

How it heals after a scratch
In tests described by Chemistry World, neither layer recovered fully when tested on its own. Self-healing was reported when the soft polymer layer and graphene oxide-reinforced surface were integrated in the right arrangement. Polymers diffuse from the dynamic sublayer into the upper layer; the hard surface acts as a barrier that traps them, helping the damaged area recover.

Ming Yang of Harbin Institute of Technology said that could be acceptable indoors, but would be undesirable outdoors or on electronic devices. The team was working on versions intended to respond to light or heat; the 2018 report describes those as work in progress, not demonstrated capabilities or available products.

What “as tough as teeth” does—and does not—tell you
The headline is a comparison, not a quantified result in the accessible report. It supplies neither a measured toughness value for the coating nor a numerical benchmark for teeth. It also does not establish how the material performs against a commercial coating under standardized conditions. The report identifies the underlying paper as X. Qi et al., ACS Nano (2018), DOI 10.1021/acsnano.7b05478.
Potential uses and practical hurdles
The researchers suggested anti-scratch coatings and coatings for medical devices as possible applications, and described the components as biocompatible. Those suggestions do not establish clinical validation, commercial availability, or a consumer-ready coating.

Wayne Hayes, a polymer chemist at the University of Reading, praised the use of relatively low-cost components such as PVA, while pointing to layer-by-layer assembly and precise fabrication as challenges. The component cost does not establish that the finished coating would be inexpensive. Hayes said the next challenge would be seeing how well the method could produce “very precise structures.”
