Researchers impersonated 95 employee accounts during an authorized security assessment of a yard management system (YMS)—without entering passwords or completing MFA. The test took place in the vendor’s staging environment, not production, according to Resecurity’s October 1, 2026 disclosure. The reported weakness was in the application’s own session-cookie mechanism; it was not a compromise of Microsoft Entra ID.
What happened in the assessment
The YMS used Microsoft Entra ID for single sign-on but also issued a custom cookie, session_secret_example, to represent a logged-in user. Resecurity says the application signed the user’s public database identifier, or CUID, with a hard-coded secret that was the same predictable literal string as the cookie name.
Because the application exposed user IDs in API responses, an attacker who could obtain an ID and generate a valid signature could present a cookie identifying as that user. Resecurity says it tested approximately 110 candidate secret values offline against a known cookie payload and signature, then successfully impersonated 95 distinct employee accounts among 241 tested user IDs.
The forged sessions carried permissions associated with the represented accounts. Resecurity says it demonstrated a state-changing administrative action. It also found that /api/v1/auth/me exposed the authenticated user’s Entra refresh token. That is an assessment finding; the disclosure does not establish that tokens were stolen or abused outside the authorized testing.

Why SSO and MFA did not stop this session bypass
SSO and MFA can verify a person when they sign in, but an application must still handle the resulting session securely. In the reported design, the application’s custom cookie was a separate proof of identity. If the application trusted that cookie to identify a user, the weakness in its own session logic could bypass the protections that applied to the original Entra sign-in.
A signature can reveal that a value has not been altered, but only if its signing secret is protected. A predictable or hard-coded key lets someone create a valid signature. And a public user ID is an identifier, not a secret: signing it does not make it unpredictable. Resecurity described the incident as “not a compromise of Microsoft Entra ID itself, but a failure in the application’s own session trust model.”

What the figures do—and do not—show
The 95-account result is specific to Resecurity’s authorized test, not a measure of the YMS’s production compromise or a broader rate of vulnerable systems. Resecurity says the assessment was conducted in the vendor’s staging environment, production systems were not touched, and test records were restored. The disclosure does not identify the vendor, confirm remediation, or establish whether any unrelated real-world exploitation occurred.
GBHackers’ October 2, 2026 summary independently repeats the account count and describes the issue as an application-side authentication failure. It also reports a 251-route API surface and a Node.js/Express, Next.js, Prisma/PostgreSQL, and MSAL-based Entra ID stack; those implementation details are secondary reporting, not details independently confirmed in Resecurity’s disclosure.

How to design sessions to resist this kind of bypass
Resecurity recommends replacing identity-bearing self-contained cookies with random, server-generated session IDs backed by server-side session state. This changes the trust model: the cookie carries an unpredictable reference, while the server checks the corresponding session and can revoke it centrally.
| Design question | Reported pattern | Recommended direction |
|---|---|---|
| What does the cookie contain? | A signed public user ID; Resecurity says the signing key was a hard-coded predictable string. | A random server-generated session ID that refers to server-side session state. |
| Can an exposed identifier serve as proof of identity? | The user ID was available in API responses and used as the signed payload. | Do not use public user IDs as session values or secrets. |
| How is signing material managed? | Resecurity reports a hard-coded key equal to the cookie name. | Use strong secrets stored securely and separate them across environments; rotate signing material if a signed-cookie design remains. |
| Can active sessions be revoked? | The disclosure recommends invalidating existing sessions after rotating the signing secret. | Keep session state server-side so sessions can be invalidated centrally, and invalidate existing sessions during response to a suspected exposure. |
For sensitive actions, teams can also assess whether the application should require renewed authentication or another confirmation step. That is a defense-in-depth consideration, not a mitigation documented as completed in this case.

What affected-system operators should do
Resecurity recommends rotating the signing secret, invalidating existing sessions, reviewing authentication logs for unusual session or administrative activity, and examining exposure related to refresh tokens. Operators should also replace identity-bearing cookie values with random server-generated session identifiers backed by server-side state, and ensure secrets are securely stored and not shared between environments. The disclosure does not say whether the vendor completed these steps.
