A realistic take on Disney’s Stitch and a stylised Samus from Metroid show how 3D visual development artist Juan Hernández has been exploring very different approaches to character art. The Czechia-based artist describes his path from hobbyist to professional as a continuing effort to broaden his repertoire—not a choice between realism and stylisation.
In a profile published by Creative Bloq and ImagineFX on 3 October 2026, Hernández presents four projects that make that range visible: two original designs and two adaptations of familiar characters. The works share an interest in character design, but their goals differ: one pushes toward realism, another rethinks a sci-fi suit, and the original pieces begin with reference and concept.
Why Stitch and Samus make such a revealing pairing
Hernández says he is passionate about both stylised and realistic art and likes making “stuff of all sorts.” That interest is especially clear in the contrast between Realistic Stitch and Metroid Stylised. The first takes a character he loves as an opportunity to tackle complexity and build on what he has learned; the second is a stylised adaptation of Samus, shaped by a specific design question about how her suit might fit a human body.
The profile does not present these as a direct comparison or claim that one approach is harder or more successful. They are examples of different creative aims within the same artist’s practice.

Realistic Stitch: a familiar character as a challenge
Hernández calls Stitch one of his favourite characters and describes the project as a chance to work on a complex character and push his existing skills. The profile’s “super realistic” framing captures the piece’s contrast with the more stylised Samus, while Hernández’s own explanation focuses on the challenge and what he could learn from it.
That makes the work more than a change in rendering style: it gave him a character he cared about as a reason to stretch his capabilities. The feature does not provide a technical breakdown, so it does not establish which modelling or texturing decisions produced the final look.

Stylised Samus: exploring how the suit fits
In Metroid Stylised, Hernández reimagines Samus rather than attempting a realistic version of the game character. He says he wanted to explore a suit fitted to a human body so it could look “a bit more functional.” That is his stated design intention, not an engineering claim about real protective equipment or a correction to the original design.
The project shows how a franchise character can serve as a starting point for a personal design question. Here, the question is about the relationship between a body and its suit, approached through stylisation.

Two original designs broaden the picture
Mermaid reimagined
For this original mermaid, Hernández describes combining real-world references with recognisable elements associated with mermaids. The approach brings observation and visual shorthand together: references inform the design, while key mermaid features keep the concept legible.
Bubbly
Bubbly is a small, crab-like original creature conceived as a sidekick for an animated feature. Hernández says the idea was to mix a couple of animals and create a “sidekick-like” character. Alongside the mermaid, it shows that the profile is not only about adapting established characters; it also includes ideas developed from the ground up.

What the profile says—and does not say—about his workflow
The feature names Blender, ZBrush and Substance 3D Painter among the software associated with Hernández’s practice. It does not specify software versions, hardware, settings, or which application he used for each of the four works. The list therefore identifies tools, not a reproducible pipeline or a step-by-step tutorial.
For artists looking at the projects as inspiration, the clearest practical takeaway is the variety of questions behind them: how to blend references into an original creature, how to make a sidekick concept readable, how a suit might sit on a body, and how to use a complex favourite character to stretch existing skills.
