The tested material was a specific combination of titanium dioxide (TiO₂), copper–palladium particles and reduced graphene oxide (rGO)—not TiO₂ alone. The results are promising, but they do not establish a commercial or full-scale drinking-water treatment system.
How the coupled process works
Denitrification means reducing nitrate toward dinitrogen gas (N₂). In the system reported by Lee and colleagues, light drives water splitting on the catalyst, producing hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is consumed in the nitrate-reduction reaction, so it is generated where it is needed rather than supplied as an external reagent. The paper reports concurrent hydrogen and oxygen evolution during water splitting, with hydrogen immediately consumed when nitrate is present.

This coupling addresses a practical chemical challenge: nitrate reduction can produce nitrogen-containing intermediates or byproducts, including nitrite and ammonium. The study’s focus was conversion to N₂ rather than persistent accumulation of those products under the reported experimental conditions.
What each part of the catalyst does
The active material was a synthesized ternary composite, Cu–Pd/rGO/TiO₂. The study attributes different roles to its components:

- Copper (Cu): assists conversion of nitrate to nitrite.
- Palladium (Pd): assists the subsequent conversion of nitrite to dinitrogen.
- Reduced graphene oxide (rGO): enhances charge separation and transfer and supports hydrogen production.
- Titanium dioxide (TiO₂): is the photocatalyst component in the composite.
These roles describe the proposed operation of the combined material; they do not mean that any one component, or generic TiO₂ powder, will deliver the reported outcome on its own.
What the 2021 experiments found
In the primary paper, nitrate concentrations from 0.1 to 10 mM were tested. Lee and colleagues reported near-100% nitrate conversion and selectivity to N₂ under the experimental conditions. The paper also reported a maximum apparent quantum yield (AQY) for N₂ production of 4.9% at 320 nm, and denitrification activity under visible light up to 450 nm. These figures apply to the tested photocatalyst and experimental setup; they are not general efficiency estimates for nitrate treatment.

- PATENTED DESIGN – The top-mounted fastener allows for easy countertop installation entirely from above, eliminating the hassle of tightening the nut from underneath the sink.
- MINERAL BOOST – The patent-pending natural mineral AK stage delivers spring water with a balanced, healthy pH and multiple essential minerals.
- SEE WHAT’S CAUGHT – The transparent first-stage filter housing makes it easy to monitor contaminant buildup, ensuring timely filter changes.
- NSF 58 CERTIFIED RO SYSTEM – Unlike other brands that lack NSF certification or full system certification, our RCC7AK is certified to NSF/ANSI 58 standards for the entire water filtration system.
- EFFECTIVE FILTRATION – Reduces TDS (93-98%), PFAS (96-99%), Chlorine (95-99%), Asbestos (>99.7%), Barium (>98.4%), Cadmium (>98.8%), Chromium (>99.2%), Copper (>97.8%), Fluoride (>97.4%), Lead (>98.9%), Selenium (>99.0%), and over 1,000 other contaminants.
POSTECH’s 2021 institutional summary describes a specific result at 600 ppm nitrate ions: the composite achieved near-100% reduction, and 98% of the removed nitrate was converted to N₂. That example is a summary of the study, not evidence that the same conversion or selectivity will hold for other water chemistries or treatment scales.

Conventional denitrification approaches may use a reducing agent such as hydrogen, methanol or formic acid. The proposed advantage of this photocatalytic approach is that light-driven water splitting supplies hydrogen in situ, avoiding an added chemical reducing agent in the reported experiment. That is a demonstrated research strategy, not proof of lower lifecycle cost or superiority to established treatment when scaled up.

In a 2021 report, Chemistry World quoted research team leader Wonyong Choi explaining the motivation: “Because photocatalysts can have a water splitting capacity to generate hydrogen, if you can combine this property with the denitrification property of the photocatalyst, I think it is possible to achieve complete conversion of nitrate to nitrogen without supplying hydrogen gas as the external reagent source.” This describes the rationale for the work, not a guarantee of field performance.

The reported conversion and selectivity are laboratory findings for a specific catalyst and tested conditions. The available study and institutional summary do not establish full-scale treatment, long-term catalyst durability, catalyst recovery, lifecycle cost, or suitability for treating drinking water. Nor do they provide comparative field data that would support ranking this approach against other nitrate-removal technologies.

A fair comparison with another treatment method would need to account for the source of reducing equivalents, whether an external reductant is required, N₂ selectivity versus nitrite or ammonium formation, illumination wavelength, nitrate concentration and water chemistry, catalyst stability and recovery, scale, and lifecycle cost. Results are meaningful side by side only when the conditions and measurements are comparable.
