A “non-stick” approach can help make regular polymer vesicles by confining self-assembling polymers to many small islands instead of letting them spread across one continuous surface. Each island supplies a physical boundary; if the islands are made consistently, the resulting vesicles can be formed with a predetermined, more uniform size. That is the central claim in Simon Hadlington’s report for Chemistry World, published 17 May 2009.
The report’s accessible summary supports the confinement concept and the qualitative outcome only. It does not identify the polymer, the material or surface chemistry of the non-stick region, the way the islands were produced, or any numerical size, yield or distribution data. Those missing details matter when judging whether the idea is a laboratory demonstration, a scalable manufacturing process or simply a promising fabrication strategy.

What the 2009 report actually describes
The report, titled “Non-stick approach to regular polymer vesicles,” says that self-assembling polymers were confined to small islands surrounded by a “non-stick” sea. Under those conditions, the polymers reportedly formed vesicles of a predetermined size and with a regular, uniform appearance. The wording presents spatial confinement as the key to controlling the vesicles’ dimensions.
That is a narrower claim than saying the method is a finished production technology. The available report summary contains no experimental recipe, named research group, polymer formulation, substrate specification or quantitative performance result. It also does not say whether the vesicles were intended for medicine, catalysis, imaging, materials processing or another application. The safest interpretation is that the article reported a method for imposing size control during self-assembly, not a complete manufacturing platform.

What a polymer vesicle is
In general polymer science, a vesicle is a hollow compartment enclosed by a membrane made from polymer molecules. The membrane separates an inner volume from the surrounding environment. A vesicle is therefore different from a solid particle: it has a boundary and an interior space that can, in principle, hold another material.
“Self-assembling” means that the molecules organize themselves through their chemical and physical interactions rather than being individually placed into a finished structure. Depending on the polymer design and the surrounding conditions, the molecules can arrange into sheets, layers, micelles or closed shells. A closed shell is favored when the assembled membrane bends and joins its edges, eliminating an exposed rim.
Those general definitions do not identify the chemistry used in the reported experiment. The accessible account does not state whether the polymers were block copolymers, what solvent or liquid environment was used, how the membrane formed, or how the completed vesicles were collected. Those distinctions can strongly affect thickness, mechanical strength, permeability and stability.

The proposed logic is geometric. Imagine a surface divided into many isolated patches. A patch is an “island” where the self-assembling polymer can gather, while the surrounding area is a “non-stick” sea that does not readily retain it. The island acts as a boundary on the amount of surface available to each assembly event.

If the islands are fabricated with the same lateral dimensions, each one presents a similar starting footprint. During assembly, the polymer can spread or organize only within that footprint instead of wandering over the entire surface. When the membrane bends into a closed vesicle, the initial confined area can influence the final shell’s diameter. Consistent starting footprints would therefore be expected to produce a narrower range of final sizes than an unpatterned surface.
This is a mechanistic interpretation of the confinement claim, not a reconstruction of the missing experiment. The report does not state whether the islands directly became vesicles, whether the structures lifted off the surface during assembly, or whether an additional release step was required. It also does not establish a mathematical relationship between island diameter and vesicle diameter.
Why the surrounding region is described as “non-stick”
A surrounding region that does not retain the polymer can create contrast between the permitted and forbidden areas. On an ordinary surface, molecules might adsorb outside the intended patch, bridge neighboring patches or become pinned at random defects. Such behavior would make the starting assemblies less alike and could broaden the final size distribution.

Polymer collected on one island is less likely to spread into the next island, and adjacent assemblies are less likely to merge before they close. The same contrast could also make patterned arrays easier to inspect: each island provides a separate location in which to look for one vesicle or one assembly event.

“Non-stick” is a descriptive term in the report, not a chemical specification. The accessible sources do not say whether the surrounding region repelled the polymer, prevented adsorption through hydration, used a liquid barrier or relied on another surface treatment. It would be incorrect to assign a particular coating or mechanism without the underlying paper.
A schematic sequence of the approach
The following sequence explains the idea at a conceptual level. It is not an experimental protocol, because the published summary does not provide operating conditions.
- Create a patterned field. A surface or interface is divided into small islands separated by a surrounding region that does not favor polymer attachment. The island dimensions and spacing would be the principal geometric variables.
- Introduce the self-assembling polymer. Polymer molecules are brought into the environment in which they can organize. The report does not state whether this happens from a solution, a melt, a vapor or another medium.
- Allow local assembly. Molecules accumulate on the islands and arrange into a membrane-like structure. Confinement limits lateral growth and keeps neighboring assemblies physically distinct.
- Close the membrane. As the assembled polymer bends, its edges can meet to form a hollow vesicle. Whether closure occurs on the surface or during a later transfer step is not reported.
- Recover or observe the vesicles. The resulting structures can then be examined for their dimensions and uniformity. No measurement method, recovery procedure or imaging result is included in the accessible summary.
The value of this sequence is that size control is attempted before or during assembly, rather than by making a broad mixture and sorting the particles afterward. That distinction is important: a process that produces similar objects directly may reduce the need for a separate classification step, but the report provides no evidence about throughput or process yield.

“Regular” is qualitative language. In this context it most naturally means that the vesicles were similar to one another in size or shape, rather than spanning a visibly broad range. It does not establish a particular tolerance, average diameter or coefficient of variation.

“Predetermined size” indicates that the target dimension was set by a design choice made before assembly, presumably the dimensions of the confined islands. It does not mean that every vesicle had exactly the same diameter. Real self-assembly processes generally produce some spread, and the report gives no numerical limit for that spread.
No numerical vesicle size is stated in the accessible material. There is also no reported polydispersity, production yield, failure rate, membrane thickness or evidence that the size remained constant after the vesicles were removed from the confining surface.

What would be needed to verify the size-control claim
A convincing technical evaluation would begin by measuring the islands themselves. Their mean diameter, dimensional variation, spacing and defect rate would show how uniform the template was before polymers were added. If the islands vary substantially, a broad vesicle distribution could arise from the template rather than from the self-assembly chemistry.
The vesicles would then need a statistically meaningful size analysis. Reporting only a representative image would not establish uniformity. Useful measurements would include the number of vesicles counted, the mean and median diameter, the spread of the distribution and the fraction that closed successfully. A direct comparison with an unpatterned surface would show whether confinement actually improved regularity.

Other checks would address robustness:
- Reproducibility: Do separate patterned samples produce similar distributions?
- Transfer stability: Do vesicles keep their dimensions after leaving the surface?
- Structural integrity: Are they closed shells, or are some patches open, collapsed or fused?
- Material consistency: Does the same behavior occur when polymer batches or preparation runs change?
- Process capacity: How many usable vesicles can be made per unit area or per run?
- Control experiments: What happens when the non-stick separation is removed or when island size is changed?
Those tests would separate three effects that are easy to conflate: the geometry of the islands, the chemistry of polymer self-assembly and the behavior of the surrounding surface.
Why regular vesicles could matter
Uniform hollow particles are attractive in many areas because size affects how they move, interact with surfaces and exchange material with their surroundings. A narrow size range can make a batch easier to characterize and can reduce uncertainty when vesicles are used as containers, model membranes or building blocks for larger structures.
However, the 2009 report does not demonstrate any of those applications. It reports a fabrication outcome. Whether the vesicles were stable, permeable, loadable or biologically compatible is not established by the accessible account, so application claims should remain hypothetical rather than presented as results.
Important limitations when reading the report today
The source is a short Chemistry World report from 17 May 2009, not a current manufacturing standard or a complete methods paper. The indexed page and accessible archive do not identify the underlying research article or provide the experimental details needed to reproduce the work. Consequently, the account should be read as evidence that a confinement-based concept was reported, not as proof that a particular modern process has been validated at industrial scale.
It is also not possible to infer a specific polymer family, substrate, fabrication instrument or application from the phrase “non-stick.” Different materials can produce very different assembly behavior, and the same island geometry might yield different vesicle sizes under different conditions.
The practical takeaway
The non-stick strategy is a template-based way to make self-assembly more regular: isolate each polymer assembly on a defined island, prevent material from spreading into neighboring regions, and let the confined structure close into a vesicle. According to Hadlington’s 2009 report, that arrangement produced vesicles with a predetermined size. The report does not supply the numerical dimensions, chemistry, yield or reproducibility data required to judge how precise or scalable the method is.
