It lays out a laboratory workflow—not a proven, commercially operating wastewater treatment system—and the researchers say scale-up, cost, environmental assessment and regulatory testing remain ahead.
What does the process do?
Published in Nature Protocols on 24 August 2026, the workflow describes how to prepare and evaluate copper-based MOFs for treating complex waters. MOFs are porous materials whose structures and chemical composition can be tuned. In this approach, chemical sites in the material bind selected ions as water passes through or contacts it—a mechanism The Indian Express described as a “molecular fishing net”.

The target metals include lead, cadmium, nickel and manganese, alongside rare-earth elements such as neodymium, yttrium and dysprosium. The aim is to remove unwanted metals while recovering valuable elements, rather than simply collecting a mixed sludge.
What does the protocol involve?
The Nature Protocols article provides a research workflow spanning material preparation through testing and recovery. Its steps include:
#1 Best Overall
- 3-Stage Filtration - The Purewell gravity water filter system adopts a composite filter technology, can reduce most contaminants. The black carbon filter has passed authoritative NSF/ANSI 42 certification, it employs a 0.01μm hollow fiber UF membrane, a silver ion membrane and an activated carbon block to reduce chlorine and intercept rust, sediment, organic matter and heavy metals, etc. This water filter system has also passed authoritative NSF/ANSI 372 certification.
- Smaller Filter Pore Size - The filter pore size of Purewell gravity water filter is 0.01 microns so that it can filter out 99.99% tiny materials from the water while other brands' filter pore size is only 0.2 microns. The smaller filter pore size, the higher filtering accuracy. What's more, Purewell water filter system can maintain the optimal flow rate (4 gallon/hour) while the filter pore size is smaller.
- Complete Accessory Set: The system not only provides safe water but also adds a touch of style to your home with its 304 food-grade stainless-steel housing. This ensures a sturdy and long-lasting structure. The 304 stainless steel spigot that comes with the system fits the chamber perfectly, preventing any leaks. Additionally, a non-slip stand is included to enhance the user experience. These accessories are included in the package, you don't have to spend extra money on additional accessories.
- Energy Saving - Relying on the principle of gravity filtration, no electricity is needed. The gravity water filter system is divided into upper and lower chambers. The upper chamber can be filled with unfiltered tap water, the lower chamber will get clean water after filtered. Because it does not require electricity, it can be used indoors and outdoors. NOTICE: When the bottom chamber is full of filtered water, please do not add tap water to the top chamber or it will leak out.
- Long Lifespan and Replaceable - The two carbon filters (black) can provide up to 6000 gallons drinking water, the service life of a single filter element is 3000 gallons (According to different water quality, the lifespan of the filter elements would be a little different). But for optimum performance, the filter elements should be replaced every 6 months. NOTICE: The filter element DOES NOT lower TDS value.
- Synthesize the MOF: Prepare representative copper-based frameworks at gram scale.
- Characterize the material: Assess its properties before exposing it to contaminants.
- Test adsorption and selectivity: Measure how quickly and selectively the material captures ions under different conditions.
- Regenerate and recover: Evaluate regeneration of the adsorbent and recovery of captured metals.
- Assess complex water matrices: Consider performance in industrial effluents, saline waters and e-waste leachates.
The protocol also discusses design strategies that could improve practical handling: controlled defect engineering to reduce hydrolytic degradation, morphology tuning to improve access to the material’s surface and support recyclability, and shaping MOFs into macrobeads. These are research approaches, not proof that a durable, recyclable product is ready for deployment.
What uptake values have been reported?
The Indian Express, reporting on 5 October 2026, attributed the following experimental adsorption capacities to the researchers. These are reported laboratory values, not guaranteed performance in a full-scale plant or in any arbitrary wastewater.

- 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱: The DREO 7‑in‑1 RO water filter filters out 99.9% of possible contaminants in water including PFOA, PFOS, chlorine, fluoride and more. It was tested by SGS meeting NSF/ANSI 58 Standards.
| Element | Reported experimental uptake |
|---|---|
| Lead | 490 mg/g |
| Cadmium | 264 mg/g |
| Manganese | 226 mg/g |
| Neodymium | 351 mg/g |
| Yttrium | 343 mg/g |
| Dysprosium | 335 mg/g |
| Terbium | 337 mg/g |
| Europium | 345 mg/g |
The detailed figures come from the news report; the accessible abstract of the primary paper describes the materials and workflow but does not list these capacities. Dhruv Menon, a University of Cambridge doctoral student and study author, told the paper: “The MOF, in our protocol, demonstrated substantial adsorption capacities.”
Were difficult types of wastewater tested?
The Indian Express report says testing included alkaline wastewater above pH 8.5, turbid water with high dissolved solids, artificial seawater and samples derived from e-waste. The journal abstract describes application considerations for industrial effluents, saline waters and e-waste leachates. This range matters because water chemistry and suspended material can affect adsorption; results in one test mixture should not be assumed to carry over unchanged to another.

- [After Sales Assistance] Waterdrop Backs the WD-10UA's high-end technical performance with a comprehensive prorated performance service; should a quality issue arise with the filter, you can contact us. It is specifically designed for municipal tap water and can only be used with cold water sources. It is not suitable for well water or hot water.
- [Innovative Design] Only a cold-water source should be used to power the filter. Its twist-and-lock construction and push-to-connect fittings enable installation in three minutes, three second replacement, and safety-assuring integration. This filter comes with a 3/8" line that connects directly to US sinks' standard 3/8" feed water valves. The system is connected to 1/2" and 3/8" cold water pipes and faucets with the use of the 3/8"-1/2" convertor fitting.
- [Solve Clogging Problem] By upgrading the filtration area, our filter now provides a 20X increase in dirt adhesion area, enhancing filtration capability while minimizing the risk of clogging.
- [Filter Replacement and Long Lifespan] This system may be upgraded with a UF or a MZ filter to meet your water needs. It is compatible with several filters with various functions. Each system has a maximum service life of 12 months when used with municipal water, which is sufficient to cover the needs of an entire household. Before going on vacation, please Put the filters in separate sealed plastic bags, and store the bags in your refrigerator (NOT the freezer) to keep it fresh in 30 days.
How does this compare with conventional treatment?
Precipitation, coagulation and flocculation are conventional approaches for removing contaminants from water. MOF adsorption offers a different research path: a tunable material designed to bind selected ions, with the possibility of regenerating the adsorbent and recovering captured metals. The sources do not provide a direct comparative cost, lifecycle or performance assessment, so they do not establish that MOFs are universally more effective or economical. A fair comparison would need to account for selectivity, water chemistry, regeneration, fabrication at scale, costs and regulatory requirements.

Superb Misra, the study’s principal investigator and a professor at IIT Gandhinagar, told The Indian Express that controlled batch experiments cannot fully predict behavior in complex wastewater. He identified large-scale fabrication, cost analysis, life-cycle assessment and regulatory testing as work still needed. Those questions will determine whether the laboratory method can become a practical treatment option.
