What can be explained accurately is how a Firefox add-on’s manifest connects its files to browser behavior—and how to test that connection.
What the manifest change actually controls
Mozilla’s manifest reference describes manifest.json as the only file every extension using WebExtension APIs must contain. It holds metadata, including the extension’s name and version, and can declare functionality such as background scripts, content scripts, and browser actions.

For a basic manifest, MDN identifies manifest_version, name, and version as the mandatory keys. A change to another field can determine which code runs, what browser features the extension can access, or how it appears in the browser. The effect depends on the field and the rest of the extension; changing the manifest alone does not create behavior that its declared files do not implement.

One common use is declaring a content script and the URL patterns where it should run. MDN’s first-extension walkthrough demonstrates this with its Borderify example: a manifest pattern of *://*.mozilla.org/* connects borderify.js to HTTP or HTTPS pages on mozilla.org and its subdomains. That example illustrates the mechanism; it does not describe what any other developer’s add-on does.

When deciding how to trigger a feature, distinguish between code intended to run automatically on matching pages and functionality that should be available only after a user action. The right choice depends on the feature, not on a universal preference. A narrower match pattern can limit where a content script runs.
Choose permissions for the feature
Host permissions identify URL patterns and can provide capabilities such as injecting scripts or styles on matching pages. MDN’s permissions reference also describes activeTab as a narrower option for some tasks: following a user interaction, it grants additional access to the active tab.

Before adding access, identify which sites and browser capabilities the feature actually needs. Avoid broad host access if a narrower pattern or a user-triggered approach will do. The permissions reference explains the available options; which one fits depends on the extension’s behavior.

Load an unpacked add-on and test a change
MDN’s walkthrough uses a project folder containing manifest.json, a JavaScript file, and optionally an icon. To try the extension locally in Firefox:

about:debuggingin Firefox. - Select This Firefox.
- Choose Load Temporary Add-on.
- Select a file in the extension’s directory.
- Exercise the feature on a page that should match its declared behavior. After editing files, reload the extension in the debugging page to test the changes.
A temporary installation remains available until Firefox restarts. Reloading after an edit lets you check the updated files without treating the temporary installation as a permanent one.
Local testing is different from publishing
MDN’s general manifest summary names three mandatory keys, while its Firefox publishing walkthrough includes additional properties, including browser_specific_settings.gecko.id and data_collection_permissions, for publishing that example on addons.mozilla.org. Those statements address different contexts: a basic manifest and the walkthrough’s publishing requirements should not be conflated.

For distribution to other people, MDN says to package the extension and submit it to Mozilla for signing. Check Mozilla’s current publishing documentation for requirements that apply to your extension before submission; the workflow described here does not establish an approval timeline, fee, or outcome.
What a first manifest edit can teach
A manifest is a small file with consequential choices: it identifies the extension, connects scripts to pages, and declares access. Loading the extension temporarily offers a practical way to test whether those declarations match the intended behavior. To tell the story of a particular first add-on, the project’s purpose, edited field, observed result, and developer’s own reflection would need to come from that developer rather than from a tutorial example.
