How a GIFT City Account Can Help You Invest Globally

A GIFT City account can give an Indian resident a regulated IFSC route to certain global investments, but it is not a universal account for buying every overseas stock. Depending on the product, the route may use an IFSC foreign-currency account funded under the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), or subscription onboarding for an IFSC fund. Your choice still determines what you can invest in, what it costs, how liquid it is and how it is taxed.

What a GIFT City account does—and does not do

GIFT-IFSC is India’s international financial-services centre. The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) supervises relevant financial products there. A GIFT City account is an access and administration route: it can connect an investor to eligible IFSC products, but it does not by itself provide access to every overseas market or instrument.

For a resident individual, overseas remittances generally fall under the RBI’s LRS framework. Depending on the investment, the route may involve an IFSC foreign-currency account with an International Banking Unit (IBU), an IFSC fund, or an authorised broker. The product and provider terms—not the phrase “GIFT City account”—determine the investment choices, fees, custody arrangements and tax treatment.

How resident Indians can use the route

1. Check that the investment is permitted

Confirm that the intended investment is permitted under the applicable FEMA, LRS and IFSC rules, and check the provider’s eligibility requirements. An account does not make an otherwise ineligible investment permissible.

2. Choose the account or fund route

RBI directions allow a resident individual to open a foreign-currency account (FCA) with an IFSC IBU for permissible investments. If you are investing in a pooled IFSC fund, you may instead complete that fund’s subscription onboarding; an FCA is not necessarily the only route.

3. Arrange remittance and documentation

Resident individuals generally use LRS for the remittance. Use an authorised dealer bank and provide the required documents. For its described fund route, DSP specifies Form A2 and a USD remittance to its IFSC account; that is a product-specific instruction, not a universal process for every provider.

4. Invest and keep records

Invest through the selected fund or authorised broker, and retain account statements, remittance records and transaction documents. Your Indian tax and foreign-asset reporting obligations depend on your circumstances; check the requirements that apply to you.

What is the LRS limit?

The annual LRS ceiling is USD 250,000 per resident individual per financial year under the RBI framework, as described in DSP’s and ICAI’s materials. It is an aggregate limit for the individual’s LRS remittances in that financial year, not a separate allowance for each GIFT City account or provider. Check current RBI rules and your bank’s requirements before remitting, since rules and procedures can change.

Do you need a USD account in GIFT City?

Not in every case. The RBI permits a resident individual to open an FCA with an IFSC IBU for permissible investments, and that can be useful when the chosen route requires or supports a foreign-currency account. A pooled fund may have its own subscription process instead. Confirm with the specific bank, fund or broker whether an FCA is required, which currencies it supports, and how funding and withdrawals work.

Which GIFT City route fits your goal?

IFSC global-equity fund

A fund pools investors’ money under a stated mandate, so it may be a more straightforward route for someone seeking diversified exposure rather than selecting individual securities. DSP publishes a GIFT City global-equity fund and describes its investment route. Review that fund’s current offer documents for its mandate, minimum, fees, dealing schedule, liquidity and tax disclosures.

IFSC foreign-currency account with permitted investments

An FCA can suit someone who wants a USD-denominated account and access to eligible IFSC investments. The account is not itself an investment: compare the products available through the IBU and the account’s charges, conversion terms and withdrawal arrangements.

IFSC global-access broker

A broker may suit an investor seeking direct access to overseas securities rather than a pooled fund. Verify the specific broker’s current registration, available markets and instruments, custody arrangements, dealing terms, fees and investor protections before funding the account. A broker’s presence in or connection with IFSC does not establish that every security or market is available.

How the disclosed DSP fund tax figures work

Tax treatment is product-specific, so DSP’s disclosures should not be treated as the rules for every GIFT City account or fund. DSP Fund Managers IFSC Private Limited’s 2026 product disclosure lists the following fund-level rates for its described product:

Income or gain category DSP-disclosed rate Holding period or qualification
Long-term capital gains 14.95% Holding period over 24 months
Short-term capital gains 42.744% Holding period of 24 months or less
Dividend or income 35.88% Product-level fund tax rate

DSP says this fund pays tax at fund level and that, for this product, the investor does not pay capital-gains tax or TDS at redemption. Those statements are specific to DSP’s described fund; do not assume the same treatment applies to another IFSC product, a direct overseas brokerage account or your personal tax reporting.

DSP’s 2026 product disclosure also states that 20% TCS applies to the amount exceeding INR 10 lakh remitted abroad in a financial year. This disclosure concerns remittances abroad and should be checked against current rules and your circumstances before investing; it is not a universal tax rate on GIFT City account balances or investment returns.

What to compare before choosing a provider

There is no universal comparison that establishes the fees or terms of all GIFT City accounts, banks, brokers and funds. Compare the actual current documents for the options you are considering:

  • Investment scope: markets, securities and fund mandates available to you.
  • Total costs: fund fees, brokerage, FX conversion spreads, remittance charges and custody or account charges.
  • Minimums and access: minimum investment or account funding, onboarding requirements and investor eligibility.
  • Liquidity: dealing cut-offs, settlement and withdrawal times, redemption limits, and whether trading is continuous or periodic.
  • Safeguards: provider registration, custody arrangements and applicable investor protections.
  • Tax and records: product-level tax disclosures, statements and documents needed for your own Indian tax and foreign-asset reporting.
  • Other ownership details: beneficiary and estate treatment, which can differ by provider and investment structure.

When this route may—and may not—make sense

A GIFT City route may be worth considering if an eligible IFSC product matches your investment goal and you are comfortable with its currency exposure, costs, liquidity and tax treatment. A pooled fund and a direct-securities broker solve different problems: the former provides exposure through a fund mandate, while the latter may offer individual securities subject to its actual market access.

Do not choose solely on a claim of tax efficiency or global access. Compare the product documents and provider terms with the alternatives available to you, and verify current regulations, remittance requirements and charges before transferring money.
