In a 2014 laboratory experiment, researchers found that the breakup of chiral bromocamphor depended slightly on whether incoming electrons were polarized with one helicity or the other. The energy-dependent difference in bromide-anion production was on the order of 3 × 10−4. The result showed that electron helicity can influence a chiral molecule’s breakup under the conditions studied; it did not show that this process caused life’s preference for particular molecular forms.
What the 2014 experiment found
J. M. Dreiling and T. J. Gay studied dissociative electron attachment: an incoming electron attaches to a molecule, which then breaks apart. They directed longitudinally polarized electrons at chiral bromocamphor and measured the production of bromide anions. For a given target enantiomer, the amount of bromide produced depended on the electron’s helicity—the orientation of its spin relative to its direction of travel. The asymmetry changed with electron energy and was of order 3 × 10−4, according to the primary paper’s abstract.

A contemporary account describes the target as gaseous 3-bromocamphor and reports that the researchers alternated the electron helicity while observing the breakup. The small size of the effect can be conveyed with an analogy Dreiling gave to Chemistry World: in 20,000 coin flips, the imbalance would be about 10,003 heads to 9,997 tails. That is an illustration of the scale, not a separate measurement from the experiment.

A chiral molecule and its mirror image are different forms, called enantiomers, that cannot be superimposed. Many biological molecules have a strong preference for one form: amino acids and sugars are familiar examples. The broader question is how such biological homochirality arose.
#1 Best Overall
- FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
- TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
- CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
- EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.

The Vester–Ulbricht hypothesis links that puzzle to parity-violating beta decay and polarized electrons. In one formulation, polarized radiation could preferentially break down molecules of one handedness, leaving a small excess of the other. Dreiling and Gay’s result demonstrated a reaction-level possibility relevant to this idea: under their laboratory conditions, electron helicity affected the breakup of a chiral molecule.
What the result does—and does not—establish
The experiment supports the physical viability of electron-induced, chirally sensitive breakup. It does not establish that the process occurred on early Earth, that cosmic beta radiation generated a biologically relevant excess, or that it caused life’s molecular handedness. The work tested a gas-phase reaction involving bromocamphor, not the full historical origin-of-life proposal.

Co-author Tim Gay told Chemistry World: “We now know that the Vester-Ulbricht hypothesis, in the form where it says the incident electron is responsible for the breakup reaction, can happen,” adding, “We validated that idea.” The report also records Gay’s qualification: the experiment did not show that the proposed process actually occurred as the source of biological handedness.
Two claims that should not be conflated
- Reaction-level claim: In the tested sub-eV collisions, electron helicity influenced bromide-anion production from chiral bromocamphor. This is what the experiment directly supports.
- Origin-of-life claim: Polarized cosmic beta radiation generated an enantiomeric excess that contributed to life’s molecular handedness. The 2014 experiment did not test this broader causal history.
The distinction matters because demonstrating that a mechanism can operate in a controlled laboratory reaction is not the same as showing that it operated in nature, at relevant scale, or with consequences that persisted into biology.
