For most first-time viewers, watch Game of Thrones first, then House of the Dragon. That order lets you meet Westeros through the original series before moving to an earlier period in the same world. If you care more about the events’ timeline than the shows’ release context, start with House of the Dragon instead. HBO places it 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Which show should you watch first?
Choose Game of Thrones first if this is your first visit to the setting and you want the original series to introduce you to Westeros. Then watch House of the Dragon as a return to the same world in an earlier period. This is the simplest default for someone asking which show to begin with, rather than trying to reconstruct the fictional timeline.
Choose House of the Dragon first if you prefer to follow the story chronology from earlier events to later ones. HBO describes it as taking place 200 years before Game of Thrones. That makes it the earlier series in the timeline, but it does not make it a mandatory starting point.

The recommendation is about the kind of introduction you want: original-series context first, or chronological order first. It is not a claim that one sequence is canonically correct or that one show explains the other.
What are the two viewing orders?

Is House of the Dragon a prequel?
Yes. HBO describes House of the Dragon as taking place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. HBO’s series description also says it is based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and tells the story of House Targaryen. That places the show earlier in the shared fictional chronology; “prequel” describes its relationship to the timeline, not a requirement to watch it after the original.

Do you need to watch Game of Thrones before House of the Dragon?
No requirement is established. HBO’s description identifies House of the Dragon as a story set centuries earlier and based on Fire & Blood; it does not say viewers must watch Game of Thrones first. Starting with the prequel is a reasonable choice if chronology matters most to you.
Likewise, the fact that the prequel comes first in the fictional timeline does not mean it has to come first in your viewing order. If you want the original series to be your entry point, begin there and save the earlier-era story for later.

Should you read Fire & Blood first?
No. HBO names George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood as the source material for House of the Dragon, making it an optional companion for readers interested in the book behind the show. It is not established as required preparation for watching either series.

Where can you stream the shows?
Streaming availability depends on your country and the date you check, so confirm the current local catalog with the service available to you. The evidence here does not establish present-day access by region, subscription requirements, or which devices support a particular format.
For context, a January 8, 2022 HBO Max announcement said all eight Game of Thrones seasons were available in 4K formats on select devices at that time. That is a historical statement, not confirmation of current catalog availability, current plan requirements, or universal device support.
The practical choice
- First time in Westeros? Start with Game of Thrones, then watch House of the Dragon.
- Want the earlier events first? Start with House of the Dragon; HBO places it 200 years before Game of Thrones.
- Wondering whether the book is essential? It is an optional companion, not required viewing preparation.
Both sequences are defensible. For a newcomer without a strong preference, the original-first order is the clearest starting point; for a viewer who values chronology above all, begin with the prequel.
