If the appeal of House of Leaves is a place that cannot be mapped, start with This Is Not For You—the creator describes an impossible lighthouse and a mapping tool, while being clear that the game borrows only part of the novel’s inspiration. If what you want is a game whose form behaves like a strange, layered book, try Liz Little’s You Will Die In This Place. For a hostile house or disorienting space, Anatomy, Control, and MyHouse.wad are adjacent picks, but their links to the novel are not all supported in the same way.

First, identify which part of House of Leaves you want to play

There is no single recipe for a “House of Leaves game.” Mark Z. Danielewski’s novel is known both for an impossible house and for the unstable layers through which readers encounter it: a manuscript, an editor, footnotes, and evidence whose reliability is in question. That combination means one reader may be looking for a building that refuses ordinary geometry, while another wants a work where the act of navigating information is part of the experience. A third may simply want the dread of a house that feels hostile or alive. The novel is described in those broad terms in this overview of House of Leaves; it is a secondary source, so it should not be treated as a substitute for the novel when making close claims about its form.

Those distinctions matter when choosing what to play. An impossible corridor is not automatically metafiction, and a game with footnotes or unusual presentation is not necessarily a spatial horror game. The best next pick depends on which experience you want the game to deliver—and on whether its connection to House of Leaves comes from its creator, from critical commentary, or only from a useful resemblance.

  • Impossible architecture and navigation: choose This Is Not For You.
  • Play and literary form entangled: investigate You Will Die In This Place, with its deliberate rough edges in mind.
  • A threatening house or shifting space: consider Anatomy, Control, or MyHouse.wad as adjacent works, not as a uniform set of confirmed adaptations.

What This Is Not For You offers—and what it does not promise

This Is Not For You is the closest match if your favorite part of the novel is the practical problem of trying to understand a place that should not fit inside itself. In the creator’s post, the setting is an early-1900s lighthouse that is bigger on the inside than on the outside. The post describes a 2D, claustrophobic game with unnerving geometry, puzzles, isolation, family bonds, and regret. Its central attraction, as described there, is not simply a spooky building: the player is expected to learn how its spaces relate.

Mapping is a mechanic, not just a mood

The creator describes an in-game mapping and note-taking tool inspired by early text adventures. The idea is consequential: later progress is expected to require knowledge of the layout, so drawing or recording the route is part of how the player makes sense of the environment. If you enjoy mentally assembling a floor plan from partial clues, this is the relevant feature to watch. The available description does not establish the full map interface, how much the game automates, or the exact nature of later navigation challenges, so it is better to treat those details as a design direction than as a guaranteed set of mechanics.

Its connection to the novel is deliberately limited

The creator calls House of Leaves “just a partial inspiration” and says the game “doesn’t feature any ‘meta’ or hipertextual elements.” The spelling “hipertextual” is preserved from the post. In other words, the shared ground is principally impossible architecture and the player’s relationship to a hard-to-understand space; the creator does not present the game as retelling the novel or reproducing its layered documentary structure. That distinction is useful if what you want is a navigational puzzle, but it also sets expectations for readers hoping for a game that makes text, footnotes, and interpretation part of its form.

The post describes the project as upcoming at the time it was written, which is not reliable evidence of its release status today. For current availability, check the Steam listing for This Is Not For You. The listing is the practical place to confirm whether it can currently be played; the creator’s Reddit post is the source for the inspiration and design description.

Choose by the kind of experience you want

The comparison below separates the works by what the available descriptions actually establish. “Connection” means the stated basis for associating a work with House of Leaves, not a judgment about quality or a claim that every title reproduces the novel.

Game Impossible or disorienting space Mapping, notes, or interpretation Self-conscious or layered form Basis of connection
This Is Not For You Creator describes an inside-larger-than-outside lighthouse and unnerving geometry. Creator describes an in-game mapping/note tool and says later progress is expected to depend on knowing the layout. Creator says it does not use the novel’s meta or hypertextual elements. Partial inspiration stated by the creator; creator post.
You Will Die In This Place Not established in the cited interview. Note-taking, theorizing, and trying to understand resistant concepts are described as part of playful reading; exact player requirements are not stated. Game mechanics and metanarrative are described by the author as intertwined. Author’s own description in a Backward Tabletop interview; the interview does not establish it as a direct adaptation of House of Leaves.
Anatomy Discussed as an adjacent haunted-house comparison. Specific mapping or note-taking requirements are not stated in the cited source. Specific formal or metafictional mechanics are not established there. A critic is reported as positing a connection; the overview’s influence discussion is secondary.
Control Discussed as an adjacent comparison involving unusual space. Specific mapping or note-taking requirements are not stated in the cited source. Specific formal or metafictional mechanics are not established there. A critic is reported as positing a connection; the overview’s influence discussion is secondary.
MyHouse.wad The cited overview describes a house that shifts and contains impossible spaces. Specific mapping or note-taking requirements are not stated in the cited source. Specific formal or metafictional mechanics are not established there. The overview reports it as directly inspired by the novel, but the source trail available here is secondary: overview of House of Leaves.

If you want the game to behave like a strange book: You Will Die In This Place

Liz Little’s You Will Die In This Place is the more relevant recommendation if you want play and literary structure to depend on one another, rather than simply wanting to explore an impossible building. Little describes the project as both a game and a book, calling it a nihilistic dungeon crawler and a postmodern horror novel. In a Backward Tabletop interview, Little says: “The game part and the metanarrative part are so inexorably intertwined with each other that neither can truly exist without the context provided by the other.” That is a direct authorial description of how the work is meant to operate.

Little also says, “I consider ergodic literature to be playful.” In the interview, this idea is connected to activities such as taking notes, developing theories, looking up related materials, and trying to make sense of concepts that resist easy understanding. That makes it a meaningful recommendation for someone drawn to the labor of reading House of Leaves, not just its eerie setting. The connection here is a comparison of interests and techniques; the cited interview does not say that You Will Die In This Place is directly inspired by Danielewski’s novel.

Know the trade-off before choosing it

Little warns that the work is intentionally obtuse and misleading, and that it is unbalanced in places. Those are not minor caveats for a conventional game shopper: they describe a project that may frustrate someone expecting clean instructions, consistently tuned challenge, or a straightforwardly polished rules experience. They may be part of the point for a reader who enjoys uncertainty and interpretation, but they are a reason to choose it for its literary and formal ambitions rather than for a promise of smooth dungeon-crawling.

The interview says the project was crowdfunding at the time of publication. That historical statement does not establish its present availability, and no current status should be inferred from it. The interview’s linked project information is the appropriate route to check what can be obtained now.

If you want a hostile house or a space that will not stay ordinary

Anatomy, Control, and MyHouse.wad make a different kind of recommendation set. They are useful leads for readers who want domestic or architectural unease, but the basis for linking them to House of Leaves is not equivalent across all three. A secondary overview reports that critic Jacob Geller posited the novel as an influence behind Anatomy and Control; it also reports that the Doom II mod MyHouse.wad was directly inspired by the novel and uses a shifting house with impossible spaces. These attributions are reported in the overview’s discussion of the novel’s influence.

Anatomy and Control: follow the critical connection with care

For these two games, the available source supports saying that a critic has proposed a relationship, not that their creators confirmed a House of Leaves influence. They are defensible adjacent picks if your criterion is an unsettling relationship to architecture, but the source cited here does not give enough detail to compare their map systems, precise spatial rules, narrative structure, or current platform availability. Choose them on that broad thematic fit, not on an assumption that either recreates the novel’s manuscript-and-footnote construction.

MyHouse.wad: a reported direct inspiration

MyHouse.wad is the clearest match among these adjacent works for the image of a house that shifts into impossible spaces: the overview explicitly reports a direct inspiration from the novel. It is a Doom II mod, so it is also a different kind of starting point from a standalone game recommendation. The source available here does not establish installation steps, compatibility, or the current place to obtain it, so those details should be checked against a reliable project source before setting it up. The distinction to keep is that “reported as directly inspired” is stronger than a thematic resemblance, but the attribution in this case reaches the reader through secondary coverage.

How to decide between them

  1. Start with the feature you remember most. If you remember drawing a mental map of a space that cannot make sense, prioritize This Is Not For You. If you remember navigating layers of text and questioning how the story reaches you, look at You Will Die In This Place.
  2. Ask whether you want navigation or interpretation. The creator of This Is Not For You describes mapping and layout knowledge as part of progressing through the lighthouse. Little describes note-taking and theorizing as ways readers can engage with ergodic literature. The former is described as a game-navigation feature; the latter as part of how a reader plays with a difficult text.
  3. Decide how important creator-confirmed inspiration is. This Is Not For You is explicitly described by its creator as partially inspired by the novel. MyHouse.wad is reported as directly inspired by it in a secondary overview. The links for Anatomy and Control are described as a critic’s interpretation. You Will Die In This Place fits the literary-play axis, but the interview does not call it a House of Leaves game.
  4. Check present availability separately from older descriptions. The creator’s post calls This Is Not For You upcoming at the time of posting, and the interview describes the tabletop project’s crowdfunding status at its own publication. Neither statement establishes current availability. Use the linked listing or project information rather than carrying an old status forward.

Should you read the novel first?

It is optional, not a prerequisite established for any recommendation here. Reading House of Leaves first will make the shared language of impossible space, unstable evidence, and layered narration easier to recognize; it will also help you distinguish a game that borrows a spatial premise from one that tries to make form part of the experience. But the creator of This Is Not For You describes only partial inspiration, and the other recommendations are presented either as author-described experiments in literary play or as adjacent works. The article’s source trail does not establish that prior knowledge of the novel is required to play them.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

If you do want the source text, a physical copy can be a sensible optional purchase. No particular edition, seller, current stock, or retail arrangement is established here, so choose an edition based on your own availability and format preference rather than assuming a specific listing is current.

Bottom line: match the recommendation to the kind of difficulty you want

For hands-on spatial disorientation, begin with This Is Not For You and its creator-described lighthouse and mapping tool, while checking its live listing for release status. For an experience that makes literary form and game mechanics mutually dependent, choose You Will Die In This Place only if its intentional opacity appeals to you. If a hostile or shifting house is enough, explore Anatomy, Control, and MyHouse.wad as adjacent picks, keeping the difference between a critic’s proposed connection and a reported direct inspiration in view.
