A hotel-provided smartphone can act as a portable guest-service channel: it may offer mobile data and calls, destination guidance, hotel contact, local promotions and, in some newer deployments, service booking or chat. The details depend on the hotel and provider; historical announcements do not establish that a named property still offers the service.
What a hotel-provided smartphone can do
Unlike a room phone or a printed directory, a loan handset can travel with a guest. Depending on the deployment, it may combine connectivity with practical information and a direct route to hotel staff.

- Connectivity: mobile data and local or international calls, sometimes intended to help travelers avoid buying a local SIM.
- Destination help: city guides, navigation, local recommendations or information in more than one language.
- Hotel access: speed dial, chat, a digital directory or ways to request and book services.
- Offers: nearby promotions or hotel messages presented on the device.
These are possible functions, not a standard feature set. A hotel should specify what is available in its location and on its particular device.

Berjaya Hotels & Resorts announced its “handy” service on 10 August 2017. The group described phones for guest use with unlimited local and international calls and data, destination information, nearby promotions, navigation and speed dial to the concierge or help desk. Its CEO, Hanley Chew, said the service could help guests avoid buying a local SIM and added: “We can also create personalised messages and offers to our guests and that will create added value during their stay with us.” Berjaya Hotels & Resorts’ announcement is a dated description, not confirmation of present availability.

Guests could use the handset in their room or while out. The figures and features describe that group’s published offering; they should not be generalized to other hotels or treated as current service details. In-room digital concierge tools offer another form of access, but are not loan smartphones. For example, Roxy describes a speech-enabled concierge that can provide hotel information and requests, and may combine functions such as a hotel phone, alarm, speaker, USB charging and guest information. Roxy’s hotel page describes that adjacent model.
What guests may gain—and what the evidence does not show
A supplied phone can be useful when a traveler wants connectivity, calls, directions or hotel contact while away from the room. It can also put local offers or service options within reach. Whether that is more convenient than roaming, an eSIM or the guest’s own phone depends on coverage, setup, language, usability and the guest’s preferences.

For hotels, a handset or app can provide a direct communication channel and a place to present services. That is a possible operational and promotional benefit, not proof of higher revenue, satisfaction or savings. A PolyU-hosted study discusses guest response, service promotion, connectivity and costs, but notes its limited sample and cautions against broad generalization. The study also suggests considering portable smartphone chargers because guests may carry a hotel phone during the day; this supports an optional power-bank accessory, not a particular product endorsement.

Ipsos reported in 2020 that 55% of British guests used their phone to book hotels and 25% used an app to book their stay. What hotels should compare before choosing a service
Operators evaluating a loan-phone program should compare it with an app or web service designed for guests’ own devices. The important differences are coverage and operational fit, not the label attached to the product.
| Decision area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Device model | Is the hotel lending a handset, supporting guests’ own phones, or offering both? Who owns and replaces the hardware? |
| Connectivity | What data and calling are included, which destinations are covered, and what applies at each deployment location? |
| Destination content | Is local information useful and current? Which languages are supported? |
| Hotel service access | Can guests contact staff, make requests or book services? Which hotel systems must integrate? |
| Privacy and reset | When are accounts, browsing data and downloaded apps removed? What usage is recorded, how are lost phones handled, and what notice do guests receive? |
| Operations and support | How are devices activated, tracked and maintained? What does the dashboard show, and who helps guests when a handset or service fails? |
| Commercial case | What are the current prices, replacement terms and deployment costs? What property-specific evidence supports performance claims? |
The reviewed material does not establish comparable prices or property-level return on investment. Ask vendors for current terms, deployment geography, data-retention details, integrations and evidence behind performance claims before comparing proposals.
Privacy at checkout: verify the handover process
Park Avenue’s published policy said guest personal data, login passwords, browsing history, usage records and additional downloaded applications would be deleted at checkout, and that the phone would be reset to original settings for the next guest. This is that group’s stated practice, not an industry standard or an audited description of current controls. Park Avenue’s statement is a useful example of the kind of detail a hotel can publish.
Recommended Free Tools
Before using a loan phone, guests can ask whether personal accounts and downloaded apps are cleared and when the device is reset. Hotel operators should be able to explain what device activity is logged, how a lost handset is handled and what privacy notice is given. A vendor’s privacy or GDPR wording alone is not independent evidence of how a particular property configures and operates the service.
