Hot or Not: How a Photo-Rating Site Helped Set the Pattern for Swiping

Hot or Not did not invent every feature of today’s social or dating apps, but it made two ideas strikingly simple: let strangers score photos, then use mutual interest to connect them. Launched in 2000, the site became an early, highly visible experiment in turning personal images and judgments into interactive internet content.

What Hot or Not asked people to do

Hot or Not launched in 2000 with a direct prompt: rate a person’s submitted photo for attractiveness on a scale of one to ten. The score represented visitors’ subjective judgments, not an objective measure of anyone’s appearance.

The format was easy to understand and participate in: look at a photo, choose a number, move on. In a November 2000 account, WIRED reported that the site had more than 90,000 submitted photos within roughly six weeks of launch, alongside more than three million page views a day and seven million on weekends. Those figures describe the site’s early traffic and submissions as reported at the time, not present-day activity. WIRED’s 2000 report quoted co-founder James Hong calling the growth “insanely viral.”

How the site moved from ratings to matching

Hot or Not added a dating feature in January 2001, according to a 2007 TechCrunch retrospective. In the described flow, one person indicated interest in another; a connection followed only when that interest was returned. That reciprocal step mattered: the site joined an attention-grabbing public rating mechanic to a more private yes-or-no decision about connecting.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The two features were related but not identical. Rating asked visitors to assign a number to a photo. Dating asked whether two people were mutually interested. TechCrunch’s account of the feature describes this early matching mechanism.

How large it became—and what the numbers mean

By July 2002, The New Yorker reported that more than three million pictures had been posted and more than two billion votes had been tabulated. These are cumulative totals reported in that profile, distinct from WIRED’s 2000 snapshot of daily and weekend page views. Together, the accounts show rapid participation, but they measure different things at different times. The New Yorker’s 2002 profile documents the later totals.

What Hot or Not’s influence can—and cannot—mean

Hot or Not offers a useful early example of user-generated content built around visible judgments: users supplied images, other users rated them, and the site turned those reactions into a legible score. In a 2026 WIRED feature, Cornell communication professor Brooke Erin Duffy interpreted the design as helping normalize the ranking and scoring of people online. That is cultural analysis of the site’s significance, not proof that Hot or Not alone caused social-media ratings, modern feeds, or swipe interfaces.

There is a more specific founder recollection about YouTube. In a 2014 interview, Hot or Not co-founder James Hong described YouTube’s early concept as a video version of Hot or Not’s dating service. That is Hong’s retrospective characterization, not evidence that the later platform or today’s dating apps followed a single direct line of descent. ABC News’ interview with the founders reports his account.

Why the comparison with dating-app swipes is tempting

The resemblance is clearest in the compressed decision: evaluate a photo or profile quickly, indicate interest or pass, and reserve a match for mutual interest. TIME’s 2013 description of Tinder detailed a stack of photos, left-or-right choices, and a match when both people swiped right. That makes Tinder a useful comparison of interface logic, but the resemblance by itself does not establish that Tinder borrowed the design from Hot or Not. TIME’s 2013 feature describes Tinder’s mechanics at that point.

The products also make different kinds of judgments. Hot or Not’s headline mechanic produced a numerical attractiveness rating. The dating feature—and later swipe interfaces—made an interest choice that could lead to a mutual match. How much profile context a person sees before deciding varies by product and time; these historical examples are not a survey of every current dating app.

Is swipe culture starting to change?

WIRED’s 2026 feature reported Bumble chief executive Whitney Wolfe Herd’s statement that the company was moving away from swipe format toward “fewer, better, more considered signals.” This describes a reported company direction at the time of publication, not a settled industry-wide shift. It does, however, point to the question Hot or Not’s history makes worth asking: when a quick visual choice is easy to use, does it help people connect—or encourage them to reduce one another to a score or a split-second decision?

Hot or Not’s lasting significance is best understood as a cultural and design precedent, not a sole inventor’s claim. It showed how participation, quantified judgment, and reciprocal interest could be packaged into a simple online loop. Later platforms share recognizable elements, but the available accounts support comparison and attributed interpretation rather than a definitive causal chain.
