Horned dinosaurs’ weapons evolved to handle the forces of combat

Horned dinosaurs did not share one standard fighting style. Their horns, brow bosses, frills and reinforced skulls formed several mechanical systems, each better suited to particular directions of force. A 2026 finite-element study found that Centrosaurus’s large nasal horn handled vertical and front-to-back loading comparatively well but performed poorly when pushed from side to side, while the brow horns of Spiclypeus and Triceratops generally experienced low-to-moderate stresses. Fossil injuries add biological evidence: healed lesions and a distinctive pattern of frill damage in Triceratops are consistent with horn combat and a protective neck shield, whereas Centrosaurus shows a different pattern that may reflect display, body-targeted fighting or less head-to-head combat.

What the 2026 skull models reveal

Finite-element analysis treats a fossil skull as an engineering structure. Researchers reconstruct the bones digitally, apply specified loads and calculate where stress would concentrate. The 2026 PeerJ study modeled Psittacosaurus, Protoceratops, Centrosaurus, Spiclypeus and Triceratops under simulated combat behaviors. These are tests of particular loading scenarios, not recordings of living animals, so a high-stress result does not identify a single strike or prove that every individual fought the same way.

The key result is that horn position changed the path forces took through the skull. A nasal horn, brow horns and the bones supporting a frill each created different leverage and failure risks. The study’s authors concluded that “differing intraspecific combat behaviors may be an evolutionary driver of ceratopsian cranial weaponry,” while cautioning that some robust skull features could also be inherited structural traits rather than adaptations produced solely by fighting.

Centrosaurus: a strong front-to-back design with a lateral weakness

Centrosaurus carried an enlarged nasal horn and a comparatively short, rounded or squared frill, a combination commonly associated with centrosaurines. In the simulations, its nasal horn handled vertical and longitudinal stresses relatively well. Longitudinal stress runs along the front-to-back axis; vertical stress loads the horn from above or below. The same horn performed poorly under mediolateral stress, the side-to-side loading that would occur if the horn were driven laterally or twisted by an oblique impact.

That directional weakness does not mean Centrosaurus could never fight. It means a combat behavior that kept loads mainly along the skull’s stronger axes would have been mechanically safer than one involving sustained sideways pushing or horn twisting.

Spiclypeus and Triceratops: brow horns backed by robust skulls

The supraorbital, or brow, horns of Spiclypeus and Triceratops showed low-to-moderate stresses across most of the modeled tests. Both are chasmosaurines, a group that generally trends toward longer frills and prominent brow horns, although the broader ceratopsian record includes important exceptions. A lower modeled stress level indicates that the reconstructed skull could distribute the tested loads effectively; it does not establish whether animals stabbed, pushed, hooked or locked horns.

The study also modeled Psittacosaurus and Protoceratops. The published summary of the comparison does not state a specific stress ranking for either taxon, so their inclusion demonstrates the range of skull architectures tested rather than a result that can be assigned to one combat move.

What healed injuries say about real fights

Computer models show what a skull might withstand. Pathology shows what actually happened to some living animals. In a 2009 PLOS ONE comparison, Andrew A. Farke, Wolff and Tanke examined cranial lesions in Triceratops and Centrosaurus. Lesion frequency in the squamosal bone of the frill differed significantly between the two taxa (P=0.002). Differences in the other tested cranial regions were not significant (P>0.20).

The concentration of damage in the frill’s squamosal region is consistent with Triceratops using its horns against rivals while its solid frill helped shield the neck. The result is statistical support for a combat-and-protection interpretation, not a reconstruction of the exact angle, speed or social circumstance of each blow. The lower lesion frequency in Centrosaurus could indicate a greater emphasis on visual display, combat aimed at the body rather than the head, or fewer head-to-head encounters. Lesions cannot distinguish those possibilities on their own.

A diagnosed Triceratops combat wound

A 2022 histological and chemical study identified a Triceratops lesion as a genuine injury sustained during life and followed by healing. Microscopic tissue changes and chemical signatures supported biological repair rather than damage that occurred after death or during fossilization. The authors linked the evolution of a solid frill and long brow horns with protection of the cervical region from blows delivered by other individuals.

Were frills shields, signals or both?

Frills and horns were multifunctional structures. A 2023 review by Ali Nabavizadeh surveyed evidence for weaponization and defense while also considering display, species recognition and structural support for feeding muscles. A large frill could make an animal look bigger, provide a visual signal at a distance or help rivals identify species before contact. Its shape and internal reinforcement could also alter how a strike was absorbed.

Centrosaurines generally evolved shorter, rounder or squarer frills together with enlarged nasal horns or bosses. Chasmosaurines generally evolved longer frills and larger brow horns. Those are evolutionary trends, not rigid rules: the fossil record contains exceptions, and a single structure could serve several functions at once. A frill that displayed color or outline during courtship could still protect the neck when a confrontation became physical.

How the major weapon designs compare

Taxon Horn and frill pattern Modeled stress finding What injuries or anatomy suggest Possible functions
Centrosaurus Large nasal horn; generally shorter, rounded or squared centrosaurine frill Nasal horn handled vertical and longitudinal loads relatively well but performed poorly under mediolateral loading (2026 finite-element analysis) Lower cranial-lesion frequency than Triceratops; no single behavior is established Display, species recognition, defense or body-targeted/less frequent combat
Spiclypeus Chasmosaurine architecture with prominent brow horns and a longer-frill trend Supraorbital horns showed low-to-moderate stresses across most tests (2026 model) No taxon-specific pathology result stated in the evidence summarized here Combat, display, recognition and neck protection
Triceratops Long brow horns and a solid, expansive frill Supraorbital horns showed low-to-moderate stresses across most tests (2026 model) Squamosal-frill lesion frequency differed from Centrosaurus at P=0.002; a 2022 lesion diagnosis documented healing Horn combat, cervical protection, display and recognition
Psittacosaurus Modeled ceratopsian skull; specific horn/frill configuration not stated in the study summary Specific stress result not stated in the 2026 summary No comparative pathology result stated here Potentially multifunctional; evidence is not specific enough for a combat technique
Protoceratops Modeled ceratopsian skull; specific configuration not stated in the study summary Specific stress result not stated in the 2026 summary No comparative pathology result stated here Potentially multifunctional; evidence is not specific enough for a combat technique

Did horned dinosaurs lock horns like modern animals?

The evidence does not support one universal horn-locking sequence. The finite-element tests represent several loading directions, and their contrasting results imply that different species could have evolved different ways to make contact or avoid dangerous loads. Triceratops pathology is compatible with horn use and frill protection, but it does not show whether opponents pushed head-to-head, struck with a horn, hooked an opponent or used another tactic. Centrosaurus’s lateral weakness makes prolonged side-to-side horn locking mechanically less attractive in the tested reconstruction, yet behavior cannot be inferred from that result alone.

The best-supported picture is evolutionary variety: skulls and weapons were shaped by the forces a species experienced, but also by display, recognition, defense and feeding-related demands. Different ceratopsians arrived at several workable designs rather than one ideal arrangement.

What the evidence can—and cannot—establish

  • Supported: horn placement and skull architecture changed how forces were transmitted.
  • Supported: Triceratops has quantitative frill-lesion evidence consistent with horn combat and a healed injury diagnosed as occurring during life.
  • Supported: ceratopsian horns and frills likely served multiple functions, including display and protection.
  • Not established: a single fighting technique shared by all horned dinosaurs.
  • Not established: the exact strike angle, speed or social context of individual fossil lesions.
  • Important qualification: finite-element outputs are predictions for specified loads, and strong skulls may partly reflect inherited anatomy rather than combat selection alone.
