Honor’s latest phone rips off the iPhone Air, and it’s not even as thin

Honor’s latest launch is being framed as a direct challenge to the iPhone Air idea—sleek, slim, and premium. The problem for the marketing narrative is simple: the Honor phone isn’t even as thin on paper, so some buyers are asking whether the comparison is real or just branding.

Here’s the practical answer: phone “thickness” is a single spec in a long list of engineering tradeoffs. A device can feel better, last longer, and shoot better even if it measures a millimeter or two thicker. The trick is comparing the right metrics, not just the smallest number.

What Honor is signaling with a thinner-at-its-core comparison

When a brand positions a new handset against Apple’s next “Air” concept, it’s usually trying to own one emotional attribute: slimness. Even if the device is thicker than the target, the campaign can still be meaningful if it delivers improvements in weight distribution, grip comfort, or design refinement.

Also, spec-sheet thickness is often measured in a very particular way (edge-to-edge at the thinnest point, excluding certain protrusions). That means “not as thin” doesn’t automatically mean “worse,” and it doesn’t automatically mean “fake.” It just sets up the next question: what tradeoff did Honor make to get its design?

Why thickness claims rarely tell the whole story

Thickness is mostly a proxy for internal packaging decisions. Those decisions affect battery size, camera hardware, cooling, and even component placement for modem and antenna performance.

In other words: the thinnest phone isn’t necessarily the best phone. A slightly thicker device can be more comfortable in a hand, hold a better battery balance, and sustain performance longer because it has more physical room for heat dissipation.

How to compare Honor’s new phone vs iPhone Air the right way

Use a checklist that reflects real usage: screen quality, battery life and charging speed, camera consistency, and software longevity. Thickness matters—just not as the only decision factor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1) Confirm the exact model and the exact spec source

Before you compare anything, verify the exact Honor model number and the official iPhone Air reference you’re using. Manufacturers sometimes revise dimensions for different regions, finishes, or camera bump configurations.

  • For Honor: use the product page from Honor or the official retailer listing in your region.
  • For iPhone Air: use Apple’s own published dimensions when they become available (or reputable spec databases that cite Apple sources).

2) Compare official thickness and mass side-by-side

Thickness alone can mislead. Mass (grams) plus how the weight sits in the hand is often what you’ll feel.

Spec Why it matters What to check
Thickness (mm) Pocket and case fit; visual sleekness The thinnest point measurement method and whether it excludes the camera bump
Weight (g) Hand feel and fatigue Compare the same storage tier (base vs higher)
Width/height One-hand ergonomics Check if the phone is wider and how that affects grip

3) Check display stack-up, brightness, and refresh rate

A “thin” phone can still deliver a strong display. What matters is peak brightness, sustained brightness, color accuracy, and whether the panel supports adaptive refresh rates.

  1. Look for refresh rate range (example format: 1–120Hz) and adaptive behavior.
  2. Check peak brightness and whether it’s sustained under typical screen use.
  3. Verify resolution and panel type (OLED vs LTPO vs similar naming).

4) Evaluate battery and charging (not just capacity)

A thicker device often has more room for battery or charging hardware. The real question is whether it translates into better endurance for your day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Compare battery capacity (mAh) and real-world endurance reviews.
  2. Check wired charging wattage (W) and whether it includes charger-in-box.
  3. Verify wireless charging support and speed if you care about convenience.

5) Compare cameras by hardware and real output

Camera performance is where thinness can be a tradeoff. The “camera bump” is usually bigger because lenses need physical depth and stabilization mechanisms need space.

  1. Compare sensor sizes, main sensor resolution, and whether optical zoom is truly optical.
  2. Check stabilization claims against real test footage (night and motion).
  3. Look for consistent skin tones and HDR handling in sample galleries.

6) Look at software support and update policy

Honor’s best hardware can be undermined by short software support windows. Meanwhile, Apple’s iPhone line has a long track record of update longevity on iOS.

  1. Check Honor’s Android version support timeline and security patch cadence.
  2. For iPhone: confirm what iOS generation policy applies to the model family.
  3. Compare the quality of camera processing updates and security fixes over time.

7) Assess thermals and sustained performance

Thin phones can run hotter because there’s less room for thermal mass and heat spreading. That matters if you game, record 4K video, or use camera features for long sessions.

  1. Look for sustained benchmark tests, not just one run.
  2. Watch for throttling behavior under repeated loads.
  3. Compare whether the phone maintains performance in warm room conditions.

How to verify thickness yourself (the measurement method)

If you want to know whether the Honor phone truly measures differently from competing models, you can verify with basic tools. This is especially useful when retailers post inconsistent numbers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Tools you can use

  • A digital caliper (0.01 mm resolution is ideal)
  • A flat, level surface
  • Optional: a scale (0.1 g resolution) for mass comparison

What to measure (and what not to)

Thickness is tricky because of the way phones taper. You need a consistent measurement approach.

  1. Measure the thinnest edge-to-edge point along the side where the taper is minimal.
  2. Measure again near the camera bump area, but record it separately as “body thickness” vs “overall thickness.”
  3. Take at least three readings and use the average.

How to interpret a “slim” claim

If marketing says the phone is “X mm,” that usually refers to the thinnest point of the body, not the full thickness including bumps. If one phone’s thinnest section is sleek but its camera bump is larger, real “hand thickness” can feel similar even when the spec number differs.

So treat thickness as a design signal—not a final verdict.

Potential reasons a “not-that-thin” phone still wins

If Honor isn’t as thin as the iPhone Air narrative target, that doesn’t automatically mean it’s worse. There are a few very common engineering reasons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery capacity and charging hardware

More battery capacity or higher charging wattage often costs physical space. If Honor chose higher endurance and faster charging rather than extreme slimness, the tradeoff can be worth it for daily use.

Camera module size and stabilization

Optical stabilization, larger sensors, and multi-lens stacks can require depth. Even if the body is slim, the camera region may still need extra volume for performance.

Cooling, durability, and internal layout

Thinness competes with thermal management. A slightly thicker chassis can allow better heat spread and reduce throttling during sustained workloads. It can also help with component protection and structural stiffness.

Wireless and sensor placement

Modems, antenna design, and sensor placement (for things like UWB-class features, depending on the region and model) can influence internal geometry. Those constraints can limit how thin manufacturers can realistically go.

Where the iPhone Air angle matters for buyers

Even if Honor’s device isn’t as thin, the iPhone Air concept still matters if you specifically care about feel and pocket behavior. Slimness can change how a phone sits in jeans, how it slides into a bag, and how it rests during long calls.

Ergonomics vs performance tradeoffs

If the iPhone Air ends up being ultra-thin, the engineering balance may prioritize portability. But you should still watch for how that impacts battery longevity and sustained performance—thinner phones don’t get a free pass.

Case compatibility and button feel

Thin phones often pair best with well-designed cases that don’t add awkward bulk. If you buy a case that covers the taper poorly, the phone can feel thicker than either brand intended.

  1. Confirm case fit for the exact model.
  2. Check button alignment in photos or in-store testing.
  3. Measure whether your chosen case adds excessive thickness at the camera bump.

Everyday pocket behavior

Pocket comfort is about a combination of thickness, width, and edge sharpness. Two phones with the same thickness can feel different if one has softer curves and a better weight distribution.

Common mistakes when judging a phone by thickness

  • Comparing marketing thickness to a different measurement method (overall vs thinnest point).
  • Ignoring mass and grip shape, which often matter more during real use.
  • Assuming “thin” means better—without checking battery, charging, and camera performance.
  • Relying on early listings or screenshots that later change once final retail specs are confirmed.

  1. Cross-check the official product page for the exact model number and finish.
  2. Compare rounding: one listing may show 6.1 mm, another 6.0 mm after rounding.
  3. Verify region variants: some countries ship different camera modules or build revisions.
  4. Look for credible measurement: in-store testing and third-party caliper measurements are often more trustworthy than reposted marketing specs.

If the phone feels thicker than advertised, ask yourself what you’re actually feeling: overall silhouette, camera bump protrusion, or the case interaction. Those are three different “thickness” issues.

Alternatives if your priority is “thin” specifically

If slimness is your non-negotiable, you’ll want to shortlist based on body thickness and overall feel (weight and ergonomics). Then you validate the rest of the specs so you don’t pay for thinness while sacrificing battery and camera consistency.

When comparing alternatives, use the same checklist: thickness and mass, display brightness, battery and charging, camera stabilization, and software support.

FAQs

Is a thicker phone automatically worse?

No. Thickness can be a consequence of battery size, charging hardware, camera module depth, cooling, or durability. What matters is how those tradeoffs affect your real outcomes—battery endurance, heat, camera reliability, and comfort.

Why do phones with similar thickness feel different?

Because thickness isn’t the whole geometry. Weight distribution, width, taper, edge curvature, and camera bump shape all change the hand and pocket feel even if the “mm” number looks close.

What’s the best way to compare an Honor phone to the iPhone Air?

Compare by confirmed specs from official sources and validate with hands-on factors: sustained performance behavior, battery endurance, display brightness, and real camera output. Treat thickness as one input, not the decision.

Should I buy for thinness or for battery life?

If you’re a heavy user—camera, navigation, gaming, or video—battery life usually pays off more day-to-day. If you mostly care about comfort and pocket behavior, thinness may outweigh endurance. The best approach is to test how the phone performs in your actual routines.

Bottom Line

Honor’s new phone being thicker than the iPhone Air narrative target doesn’t automatically make it a bad device. Thickness is a visible outcome of internal choices, and those choices can legitimately improve battery, thermals, or camera performance.

If you want a confident decision, compare confirmed dimensions plus the specs that shape your day: display quality, battery endurance and charging, camera consistency, sustained performance, and software support.
