Hong Kong Stocks vs. Mainland China A-Shares: Key Differences for Investors

Hong Kong stocks and mainland China A-shares are securities listed in different markets, under different trading and settlement rules. Eligible Hong Kong and overseas investors can reach selected Shanghai and Shenzhen A-shares through Northbound Stock Connect, but the route is not unrestricted: eligibility depends on the investor, intermediary and security. The practical differences include currency, access, price limits, fees and tax treatment.

What is the difference between A-shares and Hong Kong stocks?

A-shares are shares listed on mainland exchanges, including the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) and Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE). Hong Kong stocks are listed on the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (SEHK). A company’s nationality does not determine which category its shares belong to: check the specific listing and security.

Stock Connect links the markets for eligible secondary-market trading. Shanghai Connect launched in November 2014; Shenzhen Connect followed in December 2016. Through Northbound Connect, Hong Kong and overseas investors can trade selected mainland securities using connected exchange and clearing arrangements. It does not make all securities available in both markets, and it does not support IPO subscriptions. HKEX describes access as subject to daily quotas and security eligibility.

How do the markets compare?

Factor Mainland A-shares through Northbound Stock Connect Hong Kong-listed shares
Listing venue Selected A-shares listed on the SSE or SZSE. Shares listed on the SEHK.
Investor access Available to eligible Hong Kong and overseas investors through an eligible intermediary, but only for securities on the applicable Connect list. Some board segments have professional-investor restrictions. Access depends on the investor’s broker and account arrangements; it is not the same as eligibility for mainland A-shares.
Currency Northbound SSE A-share trades are traded and settled in RMB, according to the SSE settlement information accessed on 7 October 2026. Conversion costs and account handling depend on the broker. The trading currency is the one specified for the particular listing, commonly HKD. Confirm it for the security and account.
Price limits HKEX’s October 2024 Stock Connect booklet describes a general daily limit of ±10%, with ±20% for ChiNext and STAR shares and certain ETF exceptions. Board and product rules can vary; check current rules for the security. The 2017 IFEC comparison reports no equivalent daily price limit for Hong Kong shares. Verify current security and market rules rather than treating that dated comparison as a complete current rulebook.
Trading and settlement Mainland market arrangements apply. The 2017 IFEC comparison describes a restriction on selling shares on the day they are bought, and share settlement on trade day with money settlement on the following day. Treat these as historical details, not a current operational guide. The same 2017 IFEC comparison describes T+2 settlement for shares and money. Confirm current settlement arrangements with the broker and exchange materials.
Announcements The 2017 IFEC comparison describes mainland announcements as being in Simplified Chinese. The 2017 IFEC comparison describes Hong Kong announcements as being in Traditional Chinese and English. Check the issuer’s current disclosure materials.
Tax and charges Mainland exchange charges and tax rules may apply. Hong Kong’s IRD says Northbound trades in SSE/SZSE securities are not subject to Hong Kong stamp duty; that answer does not determine mainland tax or an investor’s tax obligations where they live. Hong Kong taxes and charges apply according to Hong Kong rules and the security. They are not interchangeable with the charges on Northbound A-share trades.

The table’s operational details drawn from IFEC are from its comparison dated 7 December 2017. In particular, do not rely on it alone for current settlement, holding, ownership or disclosure rules.

Can foreigners buy China A-shares?

Yes, some Hong Kong and overseas investors can buy selected A-shares through Northbound Stock Connect, subject to the investor’s, intermediary’s and security’s eligibility. “Foreigners can buy A-shares” is not a guarantee that any particular person, broker or mainland-listed share qualifies.

Security eligibility is selective

HKEX’s Stock Connect materials say eligible SSE main-board securities are open to Hong Kong and overseas individual and institutional investors; STAR shares are restricted to institutional professional investors. For Shenzhen Connect, eligible SZSE securities are similarly available to Hong Kong and overseas individuals and institutions, while ChiNext is restricted to institutional professional investors. The SSE’s eligibility criteria include market-value, turnover and index requirements, as well as exclusions. Check the live eligibility list for the exact security before placing an order.

Eligibility numbers are not universal investor thresholds

The SSE eligibility page, as displayed on 7 October 2026, lists a 5 billion RMB average daily market-value criterion and a 30 million RMB average daily turnover criterion over the stated six-month period for relevant SSE A-share constituents. For relevant Northbound ETFs, it lists average assets under management of at least 500 million RMB over six months and at least six months of listing. These are security-eligibility criteria, not a blanket minimum account balance for overseas investors. The page also lists a 500,000 RMB minimum securities-and-cash asset value for qualifying mainland individual Southbound investors; that is a different investor route and should not be mistaken for a Northbound foreign-investor requirement.

How do I buy China A-shares through Stock Connect?

  1. Ask your broker whether your account has Northbound Stock Connect access. Availability depends on the intermediary and account; a standard ability to trade Hong Kong shares does not by itself establish A-share access.
  2. Check the security and board. Confirm that the exact share is on the current Shanghai or Shenzhen Connect eligibility list and that any board-specific investor restrictions are met.
  3. Confirm the order and funding arrangements. Northbound SSE A-shares are traded and settled in RMB. Ask how your broker handles RMB balances, conversion, order routing, applicable quotas and any account-specific charges.
  4. Review the current market rules before trading. Confirm the security’s trading and settlement arrangements, price limits, fees and any restrictions with the broker and current exchange materials.
  5. Place a secondary-market order through the broker’s Connect service. Stock Connect is not an IPO-subscription route, and eligibility can change; check the list again if trading later.

What does trading cost, and what does Hong Kong stamp duty cover?

The SSE settlement page accessed on 7 October 2026 lists these Northbound SSE charges: a handling fee of 0.00487% per side, a securities management fee of 0.002% per side, a Shanghai transfer fee of 0.002% per side, and 0.1% seller stamp duty. These exchange-published rates can change; they are not a complete estimate of an investor’s total cost, which can also depend on broker charges and currency conversion.

Hong Kong’s Inland Revenue Department states that Northbound trades in SSE/SZSE securities are not subject to Hong Kong stamp duty. This narrow statement does not establish whether mainland taxes apply or settle tax obligations in the investor’s country or territory of residence. Those questions depend on the investor’s circumstances and applicable rules.

Which market should an investor choose?

There is no general conclusion here that one market offers better returns, lower risk, better liquidity or stronger governance. Compare the actual securities and the investor’s circumstances rather than treating the market label as an investment verdict.

  • Access: Can the broker and investor trade the particular security, and is it currently Connect-eligible?
  • Currency: What is the security’s trading currency, and what conversion costs or exchange-rate exposure arise in the account?
  • Trading rules: What are the current price limits, settlement arrangements and order restrictions for that security?
  • Information access: Can the investor comfortably assess the company’s announcements and disclosures in the languages available?
  • Total costs and tax: Compare exchange and broker charges, conversion costs, and tax treatment in the investor’s own jurisdiction.
  • Security-level analysis: Assess the company, valuation and risks directly; a listing venue alone does not establish expected performance.
