Yes. A 2026 study in and around Cambridge, UK, documented managed honeybees physically interfering with wild pollinators at flowers. The encounters included bumping, chasing and displacing other insects, as well as cases in which wild visitors avoided flowers occupied by honeybees.
The findings do not show that every hive causes a population crash, or that beekeeping should stop. They do show that hive density can matter locally, especially where managed colonies and wild pollinators depend on the same seasonal blooms.

What the Cambridge study found
Researchers from Anglia Ruskin University observed flower visitors at five sites in and around Cambridge during the 2023 and 2024 flowering seasons. Every site was within 300 metres of known honeybee colonies. The team focused on bramble (Rubus fruticosus) and ivy (Hedera helix), two important late-season sources of nectar and pollen.

Across 93 hours of observation, the researchers recorded 300 pairs of insects meeting at flowers. Visitors were classified as honeybees, bumblebees, solitary bees, hoverflies, or other insects such as butterflies, beetles and wasps.

The paper describes the mechanism as interference competition: one pollinator directly restricts another’s access to a flower, rather than both simply consuming some of the same food. An interaction was recorded as a “win” when one insect gained access and the other lost it. A “share” meant both insects fed without conflict.
How often honeybees displaced or deterred other visitors
| Measure | Finding | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Interactions observed | 300 pairs | Recorded encounters between flower visitors, not a count of all insects at the sites |
| Observation time | 93 hours | Field observations made over the 2023–2024 flowering seasons |
| Other pollinators avoiding honeybees on bramble | 28.4% | In these interactions, the non-honeybee visitor avoided an occupied flower or encounter |
| Other pollinators avoiding honeybees on ivy | 35.6% | A higher avoidance rate than the one recorded on bramble |
| Honeybee wins involving displacement or chasing | At least 20% | A minimum share of honeybee winning outcomes that included active removal or pursuit |
| Association with bumblebees on bramble | A doubling of honeybee density was associated with a 14% reduction in bumblebee abundance | An observational relationship, not proof that every added hive produces that exact decline |
Honeybees won more encounters than expected and dominated shared flowers by restricting access. The result therefore goes beyond the familiar concern that several species may use up the same nectar or pollen. Some interactions involved one insect making the other leave.

Why direct interference matters
Resource depletion and physical interference affect pollinators in different ways. If nectar is scarce, a bee may compensate by moving to another flower patch. A chase or displacement can also impose an immediate cost: the visitor loses the feeding opportunity and spends energy relocating. Repeated interruptions could be especially important during short flowering windows or in places where alternative forage is limited.

Ivy bees were a notable exception
The results did not mean that every wild species lost every contest. Ivy bees were the main exception observed: they successfully contested honeybees more often than the other wild pollinators recorded. That difference matters because pollinator communities are not interchangeable. Species vary in body size, behavior, seasonal timing and ability to defend a flower.
It also prevents an overly broad conclusion that honeybees always exclude all wild insects. The paper reports an overall advantage for honeybees, while showing that the balance can change by species and plant.

Flower, season and weather changed the context
Bramble and ivy do not offer identical conditions. They flower at different points in the season and present different flower structures and resources. Avoidance was recorded in 28.4% of bramble interactions and 35.6% of ivy interactions, so the same pollinator pair did not face one fixed level of conflict across plants.
More competitive interactions were observed during warmer periods. That is an association within this study, not a tested forecast for a particular future warming scenario. The authors nevertheless warn that projected warming in the UK could intensify interference by dominant honeybees if warmer conditions increase activity or extend overlap at flowers.

Why the issue is becoming more visible in the UK
Managed honeybee numbers have increased substantially. National Bee Unit figures reported by The Guardian put the number of registered UK beekeepers at about 19,000 in 2010 and 47,000 in 2025. Those figures do not measure hive density at the Cambridge sites, nor do they demonstrate a national decline in wild pollinators. They help explain why local overlap between managed colonies and wild insects is receiving greater conservation attention.
What coexistence could require
The authors frame the findings as a conservation and planning question, not a blanket call to end beekeeping. Their results support examining several factors before placing or expanding colonies:
- Local hive density: Competition is most relevant where many managed colonies draw on the same limited flower supply.
- Distance to forage: The Cambridge observations were made within 300 metres of known colonies; effects farther away were not tested by this design.
- Flowering calendars: Bramble and ivy provide seasonal resources, so overlap depends on when each plant blooms.
- Wild-pollinator habitat: Maintaining diverse, connected forage can help reduce pressure on a single crowded flower source, although this study did not test a habitat intervention.
- Species-specific protection: Ivy bees and other wild pollinators may respond differently, so a single rule cannot represent the whole community.
The study did not evaluate a seed mix, habitat kit, hive-management technique or other remedy. It provides evidence for considering colony density and forage planning alongside honey production and managed pollination.

What the evidence does and does not establish
- Established: Honeybees were observed bumping, chasing, displacing or being avoided by other flower visitors, and they won more interactions than expected.
- Established: Greater honeybee abundance coincided with fewer non-honeybee pollinators at the Cambridge sites, including the reported 14% bumblebee reduction associated with a doubling of honeybee density on bramble.
- Not established: A universal percentage decline for wild pollinators near every hive, or proof that honeybees alone caused all differences between sites.
- Not established: How the pattern applies to every plant, season, climate or region; the observations covered five Cambridge-area sites and two plant types.
The clearest conclusion is local and practical: managed honeybees and wild pollinators can meet as competitors, not merely as parallel users of nectar. Planning where colonies are kept, how many are concentrated in one area and whether wild insects have alternative forage can help keep those interactions from becoming a conservation problem.
