Honeybee Swarm FAQs: How Long They Stay, Whether They Sting, and When to Act

A honeybee swarm may stay clustered for an hour to a few days while scout bees search for a nest site. It can sting if disturbed, even though a temporary swarm is generally less defensive than a colony protecting a nest. Keep people and pets back, leave an outdoor cluster alone, and contact a local beekeeper if it needs to be moved. Bees entering a wall or building may be an established colony and call for professional assessment.

What a honeybee swarm is—and why it may be clustered

A swarm is part of how a honeybee colony reproduces. A group of bees leaves an established colony and gathers temporarily while scout bees look for a place to nest. The cluster is a waiting group, not necessarily a nest that has been built where you see it.

That distinction matters when deciding what to do. A cluster hanging outdoors is often temporary and can usually be left undisturbed. Bees living in a wall, soffit, or another enclosed cavity may belong to a colony with a nest inside the structure. The two situations can look similar from a distance, but they carry different risks and require different responses.

A swarm can contain several hundred to several thousand worker bees, according to the Delaware Department of Agriculture, whose honeybee page was updated February 12, 2026. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach also describes swarms as ranging from several hundred to several thousand bees. These are approximate descriptions, not counts you can use to determine how long a particular cluster will stay or whether it will sting.

People sometimes mistake a large cluster for a nest because so many bees are visible in one place. But the size of the group does not by itself mean the bees have settled permanently. A temporary cluster can form while scouts search for a new home; a colony inside a building has an established nest and may have comb, stored food, and developing bees in the cavity.

How long will a bee swarm stay?

A cluster may remain stationary for an hour to a few days. The Delaware Department of Agriculture and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach give that broad range; Delaware notes that weather and the time scouts need to find a new nest site affect the wait. It is not a deadline or a forecast for a specific swarm.

Once the bees have found a suitable site, the cluster breaks up and flies there. From the ground, you may not be able to tell whether scouts have found a location or how soon the group will move. A cluster still present after a few hours is not, on its own, proof that it has become an established colony. Likewise, the general range does not guarantee that every swarm will leave within a few days.

What affects the timing?

  • Scout activity: The bees need time to find a new nest site. The cluster waits while scouts search.
  • Weather: Conditions can affect how long the cluster stays in place.
  • Individual circumstances: The published range describes what swarms usually do; it cannot predict the departure time of the group you see.

There is no need to approach the cluster to check whether it is about to leave. If it is in a place where people can keep their distance, observing from well away is safer than disturbing it or trying to hurry its departure. Do not assume that spraying, shaking the branch, or trying to collect the bees will make them leave safely.

Do honeybee swarms sting?

Yes. Honeybee swarms are generally less defensive than a colony guarding its nest, but they are not harmless. Delaware and Iowa State explain that swarm bees have fed before leaving and are away from the nest, brood, and food stores they would otherwise defend. They may still sting if provoked.

So treat “less defensive” as a reason not to panic, not as permission to touch the bees. Do not shake a branch, poke the cluster, swat at bees, or try to collect them. Keep a clear distance and prevent other people and pets from approaching. If a cluster is beside a walkway or another busy area, focus on keeping people away and arranging local assistance rather than trying to handle the bees yourself.

The distinction is about typical behavior, not a guarantee about any individual bee or swarm. Avoid relying on appearance, size, or the fact that a cluster has been quiet so far as proof that it cannot sting. Leaving it undisturbed is the practical response whether or not it seems calm.

What should you do if you see a swarm?

If it is a typical outdoor cluster

  1. Stay back. Do not approach or disturb bees clustered on a tree, shrub, or similar outdoor object.
  2. Keep others away. Let household members, visitors, and pet handlers know to avoid the area. For a shared or busy location, the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources San Diego County FAQ suggests notifying others and, if possible, roping off the area or putting up a warning sign. A sign or barrier is an added warning, not a substitute for distance or help when people cannot safely avoid the bees.
  3. Leave the cluster alone. Do not spray, handle, or attempt to collect the bees. A temporary swarm may leave on its own after scouts find a site.
  4. Contact local help if relocation is wanted. A local beekeeper, beekeeper association, or extension office is a reasonable starting point for finding someone who can advise about swarm collection. Availability and local procedures vary.

If the cluster is in a high-traffic place, prioritize keeping people out of its immediate area while you seek local assistance. Do not move closer to set up a barrier or warning sign if doing so would put you near the bees. If people can avoid the area safely, there may be no need to do anything beyond keeping it undisturbed while you decide whether to ask for relocation.

In an article by Donald Lewis, Iowa State Extension summarizes the low-intervention approach this way: “In most situations when a honey bee swarm is found on a tree, shrub or house you do not need to do anything.” That advice applies to a typical temporary outdoor swarm where people can stay clear; it is not a reason to ignore bees entering a building cavity or an active attack.

If bees are in a wall or building

Bees repeatedly entering or leaving a gap in a wall, soffit, or other cavity may indicate a colony established inside, rather than a temporary cluster hanging outside. Florida’s agriculture department describes an established colony as a nest with comb, stored pollen and honey, and developing bees. Unlike a temporary swarm, a colony may actively defend its nest if disturbed. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services discusses the distinction between swarms and established colonies.

Do not treat activity at a building as a do-it-yourself swarm collection problem. Seek assessment from a qualified local bee-removal professional. The University of Maryland Extension, on a page updated October 17, 2024, warns that killing bees without removing the nest can leave wax and honey inside a wall, where they may seep, cause odor, and attract other pests. Simply stopping visible bee activity does not establish that the nest and its contents have been dealt with.

This is why a wall colony needs a different response from a cluster on a branch. The visible entrance may be only the route bees use to reach a nest inside the structure. Do not open the cavity, block the entrance, or attempt to treat the nest yourself; arrange professional assessment so the situation can be evaluated as a colony in a building rather than a temporary swarm.

Local rules and available services differ. Florida’s guidance includes state-specific rules, including licensing requirements; do not assume those requirements apply elsewhere. Ask local authorities or an extension office about the appropriate professional and any rules where you live. The relevant service is a local beekeeper for collection of a swarm or a qualified bee-removal professional for a colony in a structure, depending on the situation.

Temporary swarm or established colony: what is different?

Situation What it may mean Practical response
Cluster hanging outdoors on a tree, shrub, or similar object A temporary swarm waiting while scouts search for a nest site; it is generally less defensive than a colony guarding a nest. (Iowa State Extension; Delaware Department of Agriculture) Keep your distance, keep others away, and leave it undisturbed. Contact a local beekeeper if relocation is wanted.
Bees entering or leaving a wall, soffit, or building cavity May be an established colony with comb, stored food, and developing bees; it may defend the nest. (Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services) Arrange professional assessment. Do not disturb the cavity or rely on killing visible bees without addressing the nest.

The visible bees alone may not tell you what is inside a cavity. If you are unsure whether bees have settled in a structure, avoid disturbing the area and ask a local professional to assess it rather than treating the uncertainty as a reason to experiment. The location and pattern of bee activity matter: a cluster on an outdoor object is not the same situation as bees repeatedly using an opening into a building.

What to do if bees attack

If bees are actively attacking, leave the area quickly and head for enclosed shelter. The University of Florida IFAS Extension advises running toward shelter, protecting your face and airways, and not swatting at the bees. Call 911 if someone is being attacked.

After a sting, difficulty breathing, widespread hives, vomiting, or swelling away from the sting site can indicate a serious reaction. Seek urgent emergency care if any of these symptoms occur. Do not wait for an attack to pass or attempt to manage a severe reaction at home. If someone is under attack, prioritize getting away and calling emergency services rather than trying to approach the bees to help.

Quick decisions by situation

  • Cluster is outdoors and people can stay clear: Leave it undisturbed and give it space.
  • Cluster is in a busy area: Keep people away, use a warning sign or barrier only if you can do so without approaching the bees, and contact local help.
  • Bees are associated with a building cavity: Treat it as a possible established colony and seek professional assessment.
  • Bees are attacking: Retreat immediately to enclosed shelter, protect the face and airways, and call emergency services if someone is being attacked.

The guidance above comes from U.S. state and university sources. A beekeeper or removal professional’s availability, and the applicable rules, depend on your location. These sources provide a broad duration estimate and practical safety advice, not a prediction for an individual swarm or a count of how often swarms or stings occur.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a honeybee swarm stay in one place?

A cluster may stay stationary for an hour to a few days. The Delaware Department of Agriculture says weather and the time scout bees need to find a new nest site affect the timing. That is a broad estimate, not a promise for a particular swarm.

Do honeybee swarms sting?

They can. A temporary swarm is generally less defensive than a colony guarding its nest, but bees may sting if provoked. Keep your distance and do not touch, shake, spray, or try to collect the cluster.

Should I remove a swarm myself or buy equipment to collect it?

No. The practical advice for an untrained homeowner is to keep away and leave collection to a local beekeeper. Do not spray, handle, or try to collect the bees yourself.

Are bees going into a wall the same as a hanging swarm?

Not necessarily. Bees repeatedly entering and leaving a wall, soffit, or other cavity may be an established colony with comb, stored food, and developing bees. Avoid disturbing it and seek professional assessment; killing bees without removing the nest can leave wax and honey in the wall, where they may seep, cause odor, or attract pests.

What should I do if bees attack someone?

Get away quickly toward enclosed shelter, protect the face and airways, and do not swat. Call 911 if someone is being attacked. After a sting, difficulty breathing, widespread hives, vomiting, or swelling away from the sting site calls for urgent emergency care.

The Bottom Line

A hanging outdoor cluster is often a temporary swarm: give it space, keep others away, and contact a local beekeeper if you want it relocated. It may stay for an hour to a few days, and it can sting if disturbed. Bees entering a building cavity need professional assessment, while an active attack calls for immediate retreat to enclosed shelter and emergency help.
