Homey Pro for mixed-brand homes
Homey lists support for Zigbee, Z-Wave 700, Matter, Thread, Bluetooth LE, Wi-Fi, and 433 MHz on Pro (2026). That breadth is useful if your device collection spans different standards and brands, but a protocol match alone does not guarantee that a particular device or all its functions will work. Check Homey’s Zigbee brand guidance and Matter device-type support for the exact equipment you plan to connect.

Local behavior and notifications
Aqara describes M3 as providing local automation through Edge Hub features, while also noting that cloud-based notifications remain available. The word “local” therefore applies to automation capabilities; it should not be read as proof that every notification or service works without an internet connection.

Thread network behavior on Homey Pro
Homey’s Thread support guidance says Zigbee and Thread share hardware on Homey Pro. It also says resetting the Zigbee network resets Thread, and Homey Pro currently cannot join an existing Thread network because of the shared hardware. If you already rely on another Thread network and expect Homey to join it, check Homey’s current Thread guidance before choosing a setup.

Matter is not universal device support
Homey says Pro, Pro mini, and Self-Hosted Server are certified as Matter 1.5 controllers. Certification does not mean every capability on every Matter device is supported: Homey enumerates supported device types, and Matter support can evolve as the specification changes. Aqara also qualifies M3’s Matter exposure by device and integration app.
What the prices and model names mean
As listed on the vendors’ US pages checked in 2026, Homey Pro (2026) was $449 and Aqara Hub M3 was $159.99. Homey’s 2025 announcement cited $399 as Pro’s launch price; that historical launch figure is not the current listed page price. Homey Pro mini was listed at $249, but it is a different model and should not be treated as interchangeable with Pro (2026). Compare the exact model, local checkout price, and required accessories before deciding.
Homey’s 2026 model comparison lists Pro with a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, 4 GB RAM, and 8 GB flash storage. These are specifications rather than evidence of comparative speed or reliability.
When Aqara Hub M2 may be enough
Aqara Hub M2 is a lower-feature reference point for buyers whose needs are limited to Aqara Zigbee devices and IR control. Aqara lists Zigbee 3.0, IR, Ethernet, a built-in speaker, and support for up to 128 Aqara Zigbee child devices when repeaters are used for the stated maximum. M2 connects by Wi-Fi or Ethernet and is not itself a Wi-Fi router. Unlike M3, the M2 page does not list the Thread and Matter capabilities discussed here. See Aqara’s M2 product page.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Pick Homey Pro (2026) if you need broad support across several radio standards and brands, and plan to use Homey’s Flow or Advanced Flow automations.
- Pick Aqara Hub M3 if Aqara Zigbee devices are central to your setup and local Aqara automation, IR control, PoE, or Aqara-to-Matter bridging matters most.
- Consider both if you want Aqara devices managed through M3 while using Homey as a wider automation platform; verify model-specific support and exposed features first.
- Consider M2 only if a Zigbee- and IR-centered Aqara setup covers your needs and you do not require the Thread/Matter features listed for M3.
