HomePod settings to change for privacy, Siri, and personal requests

The most important HomePod privacy controls are per-speaker, not one global switch. In the Home app, review each HomePod’s Siri wake setting, touch activation, activation light and sound, and Personal Content permission. Then check the home-wide Location Services setting and delete Siri History from each speaker when needed. These choices determine whether a speaker responds hands-free, uses recognized users’ personal information, gives location-based answers, and retains associated Siri interactions.

What to review first

For a practical privacy check, work through every HomePod in the home rather than changing only the speaker you use most often. A kitchen speaker, bedroom speaker and shared living-room speaker may have different privacy requirements.

  • Siri listening mode: choose “Siri,” “Hey Siri,” or disable voice activation, subject to language and regional availability.
  • Touch activation: decide whether touching and holding the top of the HomePod can start Siri.
  • Feedback: control the activation light and Siri activation sound.
  • Personal Content: allow or block requests that use personal information from supported apps on a recognized user’s iPhone or iPad.
  • Voice recognition: decide whether household members should receive personalized media and other recognized-user behavior.
  • Location Services: review the home-wide setting that supports traffic, weather and nearby-business answers.
  • Siri History: delete interactions associated with an individual HomePod.

Apple’s current setup guidance is for HomePod software version 27 or later. Menu names can differ with your iOS or iPadOS release, language and region, so use the closest current label shown in the Home app.

How to turn off Hey Siri on HomePod

Disabling voice activation stops the wake phrase from activating Siri. It does not necessarily make Siri unavailable: touch-and-hold activation can remain available if you leave that control enabled.

  1. Open the Home app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Open the HomePod’s accessory settings by touching and holding its tile, then choosing its settings or accessory details.
  3. Open the Siri section.
  4. Choose Siri or Hey Siri to keep voice activation, or turn voice activation off.
  5. Repeat the change for every HomePod that should use the same listening policy.

Apple notes that the single-word “Siri” option is not available in every language or region. If that option is missing, the available choice may be “Hey Siri” only, or voice activation may be unavailable for your configuration.

Choosing between “Siri,” “Hey Siri” and off

Setting What it changes Best fit
Siri Uses the available single-word wake phrase where Apple supports it. Hands-free access when the language and region support the option.
Hey Siri Uses the two-word wake phrase. Hands-free use where “Siri” alone is not offered or where you prefer the longer phrase.
Voice activation off Prevents wake-phrase activation; touch-and-hold may still work. Rooms where accidental or background activation is a concern.

Review touch activation, the light and the Siri sound

In the same HomePod settings area, review the controls for Touch and Hold for Siri, the light that indicates Siri activation, and the activation sound. These controls govern physical activation and feedback, not whether the wake phrase is enabled.

  • Touch and Hold for Siri on: a person can press and hold the top of the speaker to start Siri, even when voice activation is off.
  • Touch and Hold for Siri off: disabling it removes that physical shortcut, leaving no touch-and-hold Siri activation through that control.
  • Activation light on: the top light indicates that HomePod has recognized the wake phrase or has been activated for Siri.
  • Activation sound on: an audible tone confirms Siri activation.

For a touch-only arrangement, turn off voice activation and keep touch activation only if you still want deliberate physical requests. If you want no Siri activation from that speaker, turn off both voice activation and touch activation. Keeping the light and sound enabled can make intentional activation easier to notice; disabling them may make the speaker less conspicuous but removes useful feedback.

How to stop HomePod from accessing messages and other personal information

Personal Content is the key setting for personal requests. When enabled for a speaker, requests can use information from supported apps on a recognized user’s iPhone or iPad. Depending on the request and app, HomePod may require authentication and may send a notification to the iPhone.

  1. In the Home app, open the settings for the specific HomePod.
  2. Find Personal Content in that speaker’s settings.
  3. Turn it off on speakers in shared, guest-accessible or otherwise sensitive locations.
  4. Leave it on only for speakers where recognized users genuinely need personal requests.

To reduce access to messages, calendar information or other supported personal data, disable Personal Content on the relevant HomePod. This is a per-speaker decision: you can allow personal requests in a private bedroom while blocking them on a living-room speaker. Turning off Personal Content does not turn off general Siri functions such as timers, weather or other non-personal requests.

Personal Content depends on a recognized user and a supported app. A request may therefore behave differently for an owner, another household member and a guest. Treat authentication prompts and iPhone notifications as safeguards, not as evidence that every personal request will always require a prompt.

Set up or limit voice recognition in a shared home

Voice recognition lets HomePod distinguish household members and provide personalized media and other user-specific behavior. Each person sets up recognition with their own Apple account and device. Apple’s support guidance describes up to six recognized users in a shared home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When recognition is useful

  • Several people want personalized music or podcast experiences.
  • Personal Content is enabled and the HomePod must associate a request with the right recognized user.
  • You want each household member’s supported personal services to remain separate.

What guests can do

Guests can still use general Siri functions. A guest’s music may play through the primary user’s account rather than receiving a separate personalized profile. If that account association is undesirable in a shared room, turn off Personal Content on that speaker and consider whether voice recognition should remain enabled.

Recognition is a convenience feature, not a guarantee that every voice will be identified correctly in every environment. Noise, distance, accents and similar voices can affect real-world behavior. Keep personal requests limited to speakers and rooms where the convenience is worth the additional access.

Can you turn off Location Services on HomePod?

Yes. Location Services is controlled in Home Settings and applies to all HomePods in that home, rather than being an independent switch for one speaker.

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Open Home Settings.
  3. Find Location Services.
  4. Turn the setting off if you do not want HomePod to use location for local answers.

Apple says HomePod uses location for answers such as traffic, weather and nearby businesses. Disabling Location Services can therefore limit or reduce the usefulness of those location-based responses on every HomePod in the home. If only one room requires tighter limits, remember that this control is home-wide; use the per-speaker Siri and Personal Content controls for room-specific changes.

How to delete Siri history on HomePod

Siri History is managed from an individual HomePod’s settings. Deleting it is useful when you want to remove the Siri interactions associated with that speaker rather than merely changing future listening behavior.

  1. Open the Home app.
  2. Touch and hold the HomePod tile to open its settings.
  3. Open the Siri History option.
  4. Use the available delete command and confirm if the app asks you to do so.

Repeat the process for other speakers if you want to address more than one HomePod. Deleting Siri History does not disable Siri, change Personal Content or turn off Location Services; those are separate controls.

Does HomePod listen to everything you say?

Apple describes HomePod’s wake-phrase behavior this way: “Nothing you say is sent to Apple servers until HomePod recognises ‘Hey Siri’ or ‘Siri’, or until you touch and hold the top of HomePod before a request.” Apple also says communications with its servers are encrypted and that anonymous identifiers are used to protect identity.

That is Apple’s own description of its system, not an independent privacy audit. The practical controls are still clear: turning off voice activation removes wake-phrase use, while leaving touch activation on preserves touch-and-hold requests. The top light indicates that Siri has recognized its wake phrase or has been activated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want the clearest visible confirmation, keep the activation light and sound enabled. If you want to minimize possible activation paths, disable voice activation and touch activation, then delete Siri History as described above.

Privacy-oriented configurations to choose from

Priority Voice activation Touch activation Personal Content Location Services
Maximum convenience “Siri” or “Hey Siri” On On for selected speakers On
Shared-room balance “Hey Siri” or off, depending on the room On only where deliberate physical use is acceptable Off in guest areas; on in private rooms On if local answers are useful
Minimum personal access Off Off Off Off, accepting reduced local answers
Touch-only Siri Off On Choose per speaker Choose for the whole home

The table describes trade-offs rather than measured privacy scores. Apple documents what each control does, but the right combination depends on who can enter the room, which personal features you use and whether local answers matter to you.

Common problems after changing settings

Siri still responds after you turned off “Hey Siri”

Check whether Touch and Hold for Siri remains enabled. A physical press and hold can still activate Siri by design. Also verify that you changed the correct HomePod; settings are per speaker.

Personal requests do not work

Confirm that Personal Content is enabled for that specific speaker, that voice recognition is configured for the intended user, and that the request uses a supported app. Some requests require authentication or an iPhone notification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weather or traffic answers became less useful

Check the home-wide Location Services setting. Turning it off can affect every HomePod’s location-based answers, including traffic, weather and nearby-business results.

The menu looks different

Apple’s labels can vary by HomePod software version, iOS or iPadOS release, language and country or region. The current setup guidance identifies HomePod software version 27 or later; update the software and use the matching Siri, Personal Content, Location Services and Siri History entries shown in your Home app.

Before selling, giving away or moving a HomePod

When a HomePod leaves your home, remove it from the Home app before transfer. Apple recommends removing the HomePod accessory from the home, with reset available when the speaker is nearby. This separates the device from your home configuration and is preferable to leaving it assigned to a previous household.

After removal, check that the accessory no longer appears in the Home app and that any intended replacement or new-home setup is performed by the next owner. Deleting Siri History before removal is an additional cleanup step, but it does not replace removing the accessory from the home.
