Healthchecks and Scrutiny watch for different problems in a homelab: Healthchecks can alert when a scheduled job misses its check-in, while Scrutiny tracks health information reported by hard drives. Together, they can make silent failures easier to notice, but neither guarantees that a backup is recoverable or predicts exactly when a drive will fail.
Two tools for two different failure signals
Patrick Campanale’s September 10, 2026, How-To Geek article describes a practical monitoring setup built around automation check-ins and drive health. The tools are complementary, not alternatives: one watches whether a job reports that it ran; the other displays SMART information available from storage devices. The article does not report a controlled test or measured reduction in failures.

| Tool | Signal it watches | Problem it may reveal | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Healthchecks | A scheduled job’s check-in | A backup or file-sync job stops reporting | The job must be configured to send a check-in; a ping does not verify that backup contents are usable. |
| Scrutiny | Drive-reported SMART data and changes over time | Drive health indicators or trends that merit investigation | The host, controller, or enclosure must expose individual drives and their SMART data. |
How Healthchecks helps catch a stopped job
A backup, file-sync task, or other scheduled process can stop running without causing an obvious outage. Healthchecks gives each job a unique check-in URL. The job pings that URL when it runs; if a check-in does not arrive within the expected window, the service can alert you that the task may have stopped.

UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Campanale describes Docker deployment as possible and recommends keeping an instance local or running instances on individual machines. He says access from outside the home network requires a reverse proxy. Those are recommendations in his article, not a universal security rule; the article does not provide reproducible Docker commands, notification configuration, retention details, or a documented failure simulation. What Scrutiny can show about a drive
Scrutiny gathers SMART information from drives and presents health data, temperature, and changes over time. The article calls out drive age, power-on hours, and reallocated sectors as examples a homelab owner might watch. It also mentions InfluxDB for storing data and Grafana as a possible way to graph it.

These readings are indicators, not a countdown to failure. A change may be a reason to inspect a drive or consider replacement, but the article does not establish predictive accuracy or a reliable failure timeline. SMART monitoring also cannot substitute for backups: even a drive with reassuring readings can fail, and a dashboard cannot restore lost files.
Check whether your drives are visible
Scrutiny depends on smartctl being able to access drives individually. Some RAID controllers, direct-attached storage (DAS) enclosures, or other layers may obscure SMART data or prevent individual-drive access. Before relying on monitoring, check whether your specific enclosure or controller supports SMART passthrough and whether the host can read each drive’s data. Compatibility should not be assumed for every RAID or DAS setup.

Build a monitoring setup around the failure you need to notice
- For a missed scheduled task, configure that task to send a Healthchecks check-in and choose an expected interval that suits its schedule.
- For storage visibility, confirm that the host can retrieve SMART information from each drive before relying on Scrutiny’s dashboard.
- For backup safety, separately verify backup results and periodically test recovery; a successful check-in is not proof of a working restore.
- For alert reliability, consider whether the monitoring or notification path itself could fail. Grafana’s documentation distinguishes a target being unavailable from an alert query failing to execute, which require different handling. Handle connectivity errors in alerts and Meta monitoring.
Why “haven’t lost sleep” is a personal framing, not a guarantee
The tools address common blind spots: a scheduled job that silently stops reporting and drive-health information that might otherwise go unnoticed. But the article offers no failure-rate reduction, time-saved figure, or before-and-after reliability measurement. The headline’s reassurance is personal framing, not evidence that either tool prevents failures. Monitoring makes selected signals more visible; it does not eliminate the need to maintain backups, check alerts, or plan for hardware failure.
Linkding is also mentioned in the article, but it is a bookmark manager, not one of these monitoring tools, so it does not belong in this comparison.
