You can watch a HomeKit Secure Video camera live in the Home app and play saved clips from its timeline. A June 9, 2026 report says iOS 27 supports recording and playback at up to 4K on compatible cameras, but Apple’s support pages reviewed do not confirm the feature or publish a list of eligible models. A camera’s 4K sensor alone is not proof that it records 4K through Apple Home.
Can HomeKit Secure Video record in 4K?
A June 9, 2026 report from HomeKit News says HomeKit Secure Video in iOS 27 can record and display footage at up to 4K on compatible cameras. Apple’s documentation reviewed for this guide does not independently specify 4K support, identify qualifying camera models or firmware, or describe a 4K-specific iCloud+ plan or home hub requirement. Treat 4K as model-dependent and confirm it with the camera manufacturer for the exact model and firmware.

Do not infer compatibility from a camera’s native sensor resolution or from its resolution in the manufacturer’s own app. Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video guide explains recording and playback, but does not provide a 4K compatibility list.

What you need before setting up recording
- A camera added to Apple Home that supports HomeKit Secure Video; support for generic Apple Home streaming alone is not enough. Apple’s Home accessories catalog is a starting point for finding compatible accessories, not confirmation of 4K support for a specific model.
- An iCloud+ subscription and a configured home hub. Apple says iCloud+ is required to store HomeKit Secure Video footage. The documentation reviewed does not specify a 4K-only plan or a particular hub model.
- Manufacturer confirmation that the exact camera model and firmware can record through HomeKit Secure Video in 4K, if 4K is essential.
Set recording options in the Home app
- Open the Home app and select the camera tile.
- Open the camera’s settings and review its recording options.
- Choose the recording behavior for when people are home and when they are away. Apple lets you configure those states separately.
Apple also supports notifications for activity, camera status changes, and a camera going offline. A clip may still be recorded when the home hub cannot analyze the footage for a specific motion category.

Watch a live view or play a recording on iPhone
- In the Home app, tap the camera tile to open its live stream.
- To review recorded activity, swipe across the timeline at the bottom of the camera view.
- Tap a clip on the timeline to play it. Tap Live to return to the current stream.
Apple says the last 10 days of activity are available in Home. It describes HomeKit Secure Video clips as end-to-end encrypted and says they do not count against the iCloud storage allowance.
How iCloud+ camera limits work
Apple’s cited HomeKit Secure Video overview gives these camera-count limits by iCloud+ storage plan. They are not evidence that any plan tier enables 4K.

These limits and the 10-day activity window are stated in Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video overview. The pages reviewed do not say that upgrading to a particular tier increases video resolution.
What the privacy descriptions mean
Apple’s Platform Security documentation says the home hub analyzes HomeKit Secure Video camera footage locally, encrypts clips, and uploads encrypted video and metadata to iCloud. Apple describes the recording service as a way to record, analyze, and view clips without exposing the video to Apple or another party.

Live streaming has a separately described architecture. For a remote HomeKit IP camera stream, Apple says video is relayed through the home hub in encrypted form, and the hub does not decrypt it. HomeKit renders the stream in a separate system process; apps are not permitted to access or store it or capture screenshots from it. These details concern live streams and should not be confused with the hub’s analysis and encrypted storage of recorded HomeKit Secure Video clips. See Apple’s HomeKit security documentation.
