A bundled soundbar kit is the simplest route to included rear speakers and bass; an expandable soundbar lets you add components later; separate speakers powered by an A/V receiver offer more placement flexibility but need more space and setup. The available product details support six useful examples—not a controlled ranking of nine systems—so the guide below compares them by fit rather than claiming a universal winner.
How to choose a home theater sound system
Start with the room and the equipment you can accommodate, then compare connectivity, supported formats and the complete cost. Speaker count alone does not predict sound quality. What Hi-Fi? makes the same distinction in its surround-system guide.

- Room and placement: Check whether you can position rear speakers behind or beside the seating area, and whether there is room for a subwoofer, a center speaker and any stands.
- Included components: Confirm whether the price covers the subwoofer and rear speakers or whether you must add them separately.
- TV and source connections: Check for eARC or ARC on the TV, HDMI inputs for sources, and pass-through support if you need video features such as 4K/120Hz.
- Formats and layout: Dolby Atmos or DTS:X compatibility does not by itself prove that a system has physical height speakers. Look at the actual speaker configuration.
- Setup and full cost: Add the receiver required by passive speaker packages, plus stands and optional expansion components. Check current regional bundles and prices before buying.
What do surround-sound channel numbers mean?
In a 5.1 system, the first number represents five main speaker channels and the “.1” represents a subwoofer channel. A 5.1.2 layout adds two height channels. Channel numbers describe a system’s configuration; they are not a quality score. Speaker layouts and whether the height effects come from dedicated speakers or processing vary by product.
Which system types suit different homes?
Bundled soundbar systems
A soundbar bundle can combine a front soundbar with a subwoofer and rear speakers, reducing the need to choose separate components. It still takes placement and cabling: rear units need suitable locations and power, and a separate subwoofer needs floor space.
#1 Best Overall
- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
Expandable soundbars
A standalone soundbar is compact compared with a room-wide speaker package. Some can be expanded with a subwoofer and rear speakers, but those additions increase the total cost. Check which connections and formats are supported before choosing one as a long-term upgrade path.
Separate speakers and an A/V receiver
Separate speakers can be positioned around the seating area rather than concentrated at the TV. The trade-off is more components, more placement decisions and, for passive-speaker packages, a compatible A/V receiver. Budget for the receiver and any stands as part of the system rather than treating the speaker package as the complete setup.

What stands out about each system
Samsung HW-Q990F: a complete multi-unit bundle
TechRadar identifies the HW-Q990F as Samsung’s 2025 flagship system and lists its configuration as 11.1.4, with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support, eARC, two HDMI 2.1 inputs, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The included rear speakers and subwoofer make this a bundle rather than a single-bar setup. The channel count indicates the listed configuration, not proven superiority over a receiver-based system. See TechRadar’s HW-Q990F review and home theater system guide.

Sony BRAVIA Theater System 6: a specified 5.1 layout
Sony describes the HT-S60 as a 5.1-channel package with three front-firing speakers, two rear speakers, an included subwoofer and a dedicated center channel. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X compatibility are listed, but that does not establish that the package has dedicated height speakers. Check Sony’s HT-S60 product page for current regional details.
Klipsch Reference Theater Pack: remember the receiver
The Klipsch set is a 5.1 speaker package designed to pair with an A/V receiver. Its wireless subwoofer avoids a speaker cable to the subwoofer, but does not make the whole system cable-free: the speakers and receiver still need appropriate connections and power. The satellite speakers can be mounted using their keyhole mounts or threaded inserts. See the Klipsch Reference Theater Pack product page.

KEF Q Concerto Meta 5.1: account for footprint and stands
This package combines Q Concerto Meta front speakers, Q1 Meta bookshelf surrounds, a Q6 center and a Kube 12 MIE subwoofer. It is a separate-speaker option, not a compact soundbar substitute. What Hi-Fi? notes that stands add to the cost and that the center speaker and subwoofer may be too large for some rooms. See its surround-system guide.
Sonos Arc Ultra: compact start, optional expansion
What Hi-Fi? lists the Arc Ultra as a standalone Dolby Atmos soundbar with eARC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3 and AirPlay 2. Its guide flags the lack of HDMI passthrough and DTS support. Adding a Sonos Sub and two Era 300 speakers is an expansion route, but those optional components raise the total cost. Check the TV and source connections you rely on before choosing a soundbar with no passthrough.

Sony BRAVIA Theatre Quad: verify the bundle and video path
What Hi-Fi? lists eARC, one HDMI input, 4K/120Hz pass-through, Dolby Vision, VRR and Bluetooth 5.2, along with several Dolby and DTS formats. It notes the system’s high price as a drawback. Regional bundles may differ, so confirm whether a subwoofer is included in the version sold where you live; do not assume all listings contain the same components.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do more speakers mean better audio?
No—not by themselves. More channels describe a more elaborate layout, but the room, speaker placement, system design and source connections all matter. A setup with many speakers may be a poor fit if there is nowhere to place its rear or height units. What Hi-Fi? cautions against treating additional speakers as an automatic quality upgrade in its guide.
Can a soundbar provide surround sound?
Yes. A soundbar can create a surround effect through its speaker design and audio processing, and some models can add physical rear speakers. What Hi-Fi? says a good separate-speaker package can outperform soundbars for surround, but that is review guidance rather than a guarantee for every room or system. Choose based on the experience and installation you want, not the category name alone.
