Home Sweet Home Is My Least Favorite Blood of Dawnwalker Mission—and Its Best Written

GamesRadar+ Senior Staff Writer Jasmine Gould-Wilson calls Home Sweet Home an optional quest she never wants to replay, even though its story and level design made it one of the most memorable missions in The Blood of Dawnwalker. The reason is that its exhausting dream sequence makes Coen’s guilt playable: each failed attempt to save his family pulls him back toward the memory he has avoided.

What is the Home Sweet Home mission?

Home Sweet Home is an optional, branching side quest associated with the long-dead boyaress Xanthe. In Gould-Wilson’s account, Coen enters the quest after exploring farther up an alchemist’s tower in Svartrau rather than leaving to pursue the next objective. Players who leave the tower can miss it.

The mission begins in a dream version of Coen’s family home. His dead family appears alive, but the apparent reunion becomes a rescue attempt when monsters attack. The shift from comfort to danger sets up the quest’s central pattern: Coen keeps trying to protect the people he has already lost.

Why does the quest feel so difficult to replay?

Coen has to fight without his usual tools

In the dream, Coen loses his normal equipment and powers. He must fight through repeated monster encounters without the abilities that ordinarily define how he handles danger. That change makes the sequence feel more vulnerable and stressful than a standard combat stretch.

THE BLOOD OF DAWNWALKER: Day 1 Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
  • Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
  • Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
  • Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.

The apparent rescue does not end the nightmare

After Coen reaches the church, the dream loops rather than providing a clean escape. The repetition adds to the disorientation and makes the player feel caught in the same desperate effort as Coen: trying again to save his family, only to find that the rescue is not the answer.

How the dream reveals Coen’s guilt

Coen’s search eventually leads him to a well and a memory of his younger brother Alin’s childhood death. The sequence gives shape to the guilt beneath his repeated attempts to save his family. When Coen finds Alin in the dream, he can say farewell; that encounter ends the dream and wakes him in Gould-Wilson’s playthrough.

The Blood of Dawnwalker | Standard Edition | XBOX Series X|S Digital Code
  • BECOME THE DAWNWALKER — Play as Coen, a man transformed into a Dawnwalker who walks the line between humanity and vampiric power as he fights to save those he loves.
  • SHAPE YOUR OWN DESTINY — Make meaningful choices that determine alliances, revenge, family loyalties, and the fate of the valley through a branching narrative RPG experience.
  • DAY AND NIGHT GAMEPLAY — Master two distinct gameplay styles with different abilities, opportunities, mysteries, and approaches that change depending on the time of day.
  • SWORD CLAWS AND DARK POWERS — Wield weapons and magic as a human by day or unleash supernatural vampire abilities, enhanced mobility, and devastating combat skills by night.
  • A WORLD WHERE TIME MATTERS — Every quest advances time and brings your family closer to their fate, forcing difficult decisions about who to save and what to sacrifice.

That emotional turn is why the quest’s mechanics matter. The loop is not just a difficult obstacle placed between scenes: it makes Coen’s savior complex visible through repeated action, then forces him to confront the loss he cannot undo. Gould-Wilson describes the result as “one of the most poetic examples of narrative and level design confluence I’ve ever experienced.”

Is Home Sweet Home the best-written mission in the RPG?

That is Gould-Wilson’s personal assessment, not an established ranking of every quest in the game. Her praise rests on how the dream’s structure, combat, and emotional reveal work together to express Coen’s character. Her reluctance to play it again is equally personal: the loop, the dreamlike confusion, and the difficult fights make the mission stressful even though its conclusion lands powerfully.

Tom’s Guide describes The Blood of Dawnwalker as an RPG for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, built around Coen’s effort to save his family during a 30-day-and-night deadline. That broader premise helps explain why a mission about repeatedly failing to rescue loved ones can fit the game’s stakes, but it does not establish that every player will encounter or interpret Home Sweet Home the same way.
