Home robots are getting arms so they can do more than navigate floors: a limb can move selected objects, interact with appliances, and potentially connect separate household chores. But an arm does not make a robot a reliable all-purpose housekeeper. Current products and demonstrations range from a vacuum with a narrowly defined object-moving feature to a larger assistant shown performing planned chore scenarios.
Why are home robots getting arms?
To manipulate objects, not just move around
A conventional robot vacuum can navigate around an object, but it cannot move that object out of its route. A mechanical arm adds a way to act on the environment. Roborock positions the arm on its Saros Z70 for shifting certain obstacles and relocating selected household items. LG’s CLOiD announcement presents a broader ambition: picking up objects and coordinating household tasks with connected appliances. Those are different scopes, not interchangeable capabilities.

To connect appliances and chores
LG describes CLOiD as part of its ThinQ connected-appliance ecosystem. Its planned scenarios include retrieving food and initiating laundry-related tasks. LG also says it wants to develop both “Appliance Robots,” such as robot vacuums, and “Robotized Appliances,” such as refrigerators with automatic doors. These plans frame the arm as one part of a home system: the robot manipulates objects while connected appliances carry out other steps. The announcement describes company goals and demonstrations, not independently verified everyday performance.
Because appliance makers are investing in robotics
LG says it established an HS Robotics Lab and is pursuing robotics research and strategic partnerships. Midea’s 2025 annual report, filed March 30, 2026, describes using AI and robotics in appliance robotization, including visual recognition, robotic arms, and human-machine interaction. It discusses industrial factory work separately from the commercial and domestic direction of its MIRA robot, so those deployments should not be treated as evidence that a household robot is ready for routine chores. LG’s robotics roadmap announcement and Midea’s 2025 annual report outline these company strategies.

What can a robot vacuum with an arm actually do?
Roborock describes the Saros Z70 as a mass-produced robot vacuum with a foldable five-axis mechanical arm, launched in January 2025. Its current US product page says the item-relocation feature recognizes socks, sandals, crumpled tissues, and towels weighing under 300 g. The company says users must set up the feature through its app, and that performance varies with software and environmental conditions. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not independent test results; the listed objects and weight limit do not imply that the arm can handle arbitrary clutter.

Can a home robot fold laundry or load a dishwasher?
The cited LG CLOiD announcement shows planned household scenarios and describes a robot with two arms, seven degrees of freedom per arm, and five individually actuated fingers per hand. That anatomy is intended to enable more nuanced manipulation than a single-purpose vacuum arm. It does not establish that CLOiD is generally available for retail or that it can reliably fold laundry, load a dishwasher, or complete those jobs in ordinary homes. The supported claim is that LG has presented these as part of its home-robot vision, not that the robot has demonstrated dependable general-purpose performance. LG’s CLOiD announcement attributes the goal of household help to the company’s design intentions.

Why is reliable household manipulation difficult?
Moving an object is only one part of a chore. A robot must recognize what it sees, choose a suitable grasp, understand appliance controls, and execute several steps without an early mistake derailing what follows. Appliance instructions also have to be translated into actions grounded in a particular environment.
The 2025 ApBot paper addresses appliance operation from manuals. Its abstract reports improved task success over direct large vision-language-model control policies in the authors’ simulated and real-world appliance experiments. That is evidence about their method and experimental setup, not a guarantee of reliability across appliances or homes. Read the ApBot paper.

Home conditions add further variation. In “On Bringing Robots Home” (2023), the Dobb-E authors report collecting 13 hours of demonstration data in 22 New York City homes. They tested 109 tasks across 10 homes and reported an 81% success rate for their system and experimental setup. The figure does not describe home robots generally; the authors also identify challenges such as shadows and inconsistent demonstrations. Read the Dobb-E study.
How do the arm-equipped home robots compare?
| Example | Task scope | Status described in sources | Setup or limits | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|

The listed recognized items are socks, sandals, crumpled tissues, and towels under 300 g; performance varies with software and environment. | Manufacturer specifications and claims; not an independent reliability assessment. |
| LG CLOiD | Broader object handling and appliance-coordinated household scenarios. | LG announcement and planned demonstrations; the cited material does not establish general retail availability. | Described with two arms, seven degrees of freedom per arm, and five individually actuated fingers per hand. Scenarios are tied to LG’s connected-appliance vision. | Manufacturer description and demonstrations; not independent evidence of routine chore performance. |
Are robot arms useful in a normal home?
They can be useful when the task is bounded and the robot is designed for it: a vacuum moving a small, recognized object is a more modest proposition than a mobile assistant managing a sequence of chores. The practical question is not simply whether a robot has an arm, but which objects and actions it supports, what setup it needs, and how well it handles variation in a real room. Current evidence supports incremental object handling and a longer-term push toward broader home assistance; it does not show that arm-equipped robots can reliably take over housework.
