Home Robots Explained: Proven Tasks, Limits and Buying Reality

Home robots can already do a few tightly defined jobs, but no independently verified general-purpose home robot can reliably cook, sort laundry, clean up clutter and adapt to an ordinary household. The gap is not a lack of impressive demonstrations. It is the difference between repeating one trained routine and handling a changing home full of unfamiliar objects, layouts and instructions.

Robot vacuums show that task-specific automation works. Newer systems from manufacturers and university teams show meaningful progress in grasping and household manipulation. Their results are bounded by the task, test homes, assistance and evaluation method, so they should not be treated as proof that a general household helper is ready.

“Home robot” can mean several very different things

A robot vacuum, a research platform and a humanoid demonstrated at a technology show may all be called home robots, but they solve very different problems. The useful first question is not “Can a robot do chores?” It is “Which chore, in which home, with which objects, and with what evidence?”

Task-specific appliance robots

Robot vacuums are the clearest established example. They are designed around a defined job: moving across floors and collecting dirt. Their hardware, navigation and software can be optimized for that environment. That does not make them general household helpers, but it does show that a constrained domestic task can be automated at consumer scale.

General-purpose household helpers

A robot that puts away groceries, loads a dishwasher, folds mixed laundry and clears a table must switch between unrelated tasks. It has to identify objects, understand a request, move safely around people and furniture, choose a grasp, manipulate objects with different shapes and materials, and recover when something is not where it was expected to be. These requirements compound rather than simply add together.

Demonstrations and research systems

Manufacturers often show a carefully selected scenario, while academic projects measure a defined set of tasks under stated conditions. Both can be valuable evidence of capability. Neither automatically establishes that a machine will run for weeks in customers’ homes without intervention.

What current systems have actually shown

LG CLOiD: a company-announced CES demonstration

In a January 4, 2026 announcement, LG said its CLOiD home robot would be publicly demonstrated at CES 2026. The scenarios described by LG included retrieving milk, placing a croissant in an oven, starting laundry, and folding and stacking garments. Those are capabilities presented in LG’s demonstration plan, not results from independent testing or evidence that a generally available product can perform the same jobs reliably in arbitrary homes.

Steve Baek, president of LG’s Home Appliance Solution Company, described the design goal this way: “The LG CLOiD home robot is designed to naturally engage with and understand the humans it serves, providing an optimized level of household help.” That is a company statement of intent. It should be read separately from a repeatable performance measurement.

Sunday Robotics Memo: listed skills, but not a retail product

Sunday Robotics lists Memo’s current skills as collecting utensils and dishes, clearing scraps, loading and running a dishwasher, making espresso, and handling piles of socks. The company also says it is actively improving reliability and generalization.

Its FAQ says Memo is not yet available for purchase and that sales follow beta testing in 2026. Availability is a changing commercial detail, so anyone considering the system should check the company’s current status rather than assume that a demonstration means a product can be ordered.

Dobb·E: in-home manipulation with a measured task set

The Dobb·E project reports an 81% success rate across 109 tasks carried out in 10 homes in New York City and surrounding areas over roughly 30 days. The percentage belongs to that project’s system, task set and evaluation procedure; it is not a universal success rate for home robots.

The project also illustrates why real homes are harder than laboratory scenes. It encountered strong shadows and demonstrations that varied when non-experts showed the system what to do. Dobb·E used a $25 reacher-grabber stick, 3D-printed parts and an iPhone to collect demonstrations. Those are research tools used to build and evaluate the system, not a recommended consumer setup.

HomeRobot OVMM: a lower baseline in a different benchmark

A 2023 HomeRobot OVMM paper reports a 20% real-world success rate for its baselines. The benchmark asks a robot to navigate to novel objects, grasp them and place them on target receptacles. It is a research baseline for open-vocabulary mobile manipulation, not a consumer-product score.

The Dobb·E and HomeRobot percentages cannot be averaged, ranked or plotted as a single industry trend. They use different robots, tasks, homes, definitions of success and evaluation procedures. A higher number in one study does not establish that its system is more capable overall.

Why ordinary chores are unusually difficult

Perception changes from moment to moment

A home is not a fixed factory line. Lighting changes during the day; shadows can hide edges; transparent, reflective and soft objects look different from one camera angle to the next. A shirt may be inside a basket, under another shirt or partly hanging off a chair. The robot must detect what matters before it can decide what to do.

Language has to become a physical plan

“Put the cups away” leaves many details unstated. Which cups count? Where do they belong? Is the cupboard open? Is a fragile glass mixed with plastic? A useful system must turn an underspecified request into a sequence of safe actions and ask for clarification when the household’s conventions are unknown.

Navigation and manipulation are coupled

Reaching an object is only one part of the job. The robot must get around furniture, avoid people and pets, position its arm, choose a grasp that will not crush or drop the item, and carry it without collision. A small navigation error can make an otherwise successful grasp impossible.

Objects and layouts do not stay put

Research benchmarks can specify target receptacles and novel objects, but everyday homes constantly rearrange themselves. A bowl moves from the counter to the sink; a chair blocks a route; a dishwasher rack is loaded differently; a child leaves a toy in the hallway. Generalization means handling those changes without a new demonstration for every variation.

Integration is the hardest layer

The HomeRobot OVMM paper identifies perception, language understanding, navigation, manipulation and the integration of all four as central challenges. A system can perform well on each component in isolation and still fail when it must coordinate them under time pressure and uncertainty.

How to evaluate a home-robot claim

When a video or product page promises household help, use the following questions before treating it as evidence:

  • What exact task was completed? “Household chores” is too broad. Look for a defined action such as placing a named object in a named receptacle.
  • Was the scene selected or representative? A staged demonstration may omit failed attempts, resets and human positioning of objects.
  • How many attempts were measured? A percentage needs a denominator, task definition and failure policy.
  • Where did testing occur? A laboratory, a small set of instrumented homes and normal customer residences provide different evidence.
  • Were objects and layouts familiar? Generalization is stronger when the robot faces new homes, moved objects and unfamiliar instructions.
  • How much human help was present? Ask whether a person demonstrated the task, corrected errors, teleoperated the robot or reset the scene.
  • Can the system recover? Real usefulness depends on what happens after a dropped item, blocked route, closed door or ambiguous request.
  • Is it actually available? Distinguish a purchasable product from a beta, research platform or announced future system.

The available examples do not provide a comparable cross-product scorecard for reliability, safety, maintenance or purchase price. Those are questions to ask vendors, not numbers to infer from a single clip or from percentages measured under different protocols.

What “reliable enough” would require

A useful general home robot would need evidence beyond a successful highlight reel. Buyers should expect a clear task list, a stated operating envelope, failure and recovery rates, and information about supervision. The test should include homes and objects that were not used to tune the behavior, not only the easiest version of a chore.

Reliability also has a time dimension. Folding five garments once is different from folding mixed laundry every week, including garments that are inside out, damp, tangled or partly hidden. A practical system must tolerate interruptions, keep track of unfinished work and fail safely when it cannot identify an object.

Safety and maintenance matter as much as dexterity. A robot working near ovens, hot drinks, knives, glass and children needs conservative behavior and a clear stop mechanism. Cameras, grippers, batteries and moving joints require cleaning, charging and eventual service. The cited examples do not establish common standards or costs for those issues, so claims should remain product-specific.

Are home robots available to buy?

Yes, if “home robot” means a task-specific appliance such as a robot vacuum. The evidence here does not show a broadly available, general-purpose robot that can reliably manage a typical home’s varied chores without supervision.

LG’s CLOiD example is tied to an announced CES 2026 demonstration. Sunday Robotics describes Memo’s skills but says it is not yet for sale, with sales following beta testing in 2026. Research systems such as Dobb·E and HomeRobot OVMM are evidence of progress, not ordinary retail appliances.

For a purchase decision, match the product to one defined job and verify the current availability, warranty, support, privacy terms and return policy. Do not buy a narrow appliance expecting it to become a general helper through a software update unless the maker provides evidence for that broader capability.

What progress would change the answer?

The decisive milestone is not a robot performing one more impressive chore. It is dependable generalization: the same system completing many tasks in unfamiliar homes, with moved objects and ordinary interruptions, while reporting failures honestly and recovering without constant human rescue.

That will require better perception in difficult lighting, stronger language-to-action planning, safer whole-body navigation, more reliable grasping and a control system that coordinates all of them. It will also require evaluation that reports repeatable denominators across realistic homes instead of relying on selected demonstrations.

For now, the accurate verdict is uneven progress. Home robots can do something when the task and environment are constrained. They still cannot be treated as dependable all-purpose household workers, because the evidence for that broader claim has not been established.
