Both have housing exposure, but investors should examine the distinct demand channels, operating models, capital needs and risks of each company rather than treating the categories as interchangeable.
What separates the two types of stocks?
The distinction starts with what customers buy. A home improvement retailer sells merchandise for projects and property upkeep, sometimes alongside services. A homebuilder constructs homes for buyers and may also operate adjacent businesses such as land development, rentals or financial services.

Retailers sell merchandise and may add services
For a retailer, revenue can reflect a broad basket of goods rather than a single kind of project. Home Depot’s FY2025 description includes products for home improvement and building, as well as lawn and garden, décor and facilities MRO. Installation and equipment rental add service offerings alongside merchandise. That mix means a retailer’s results should be assessed through its own product and service disclosures, not assumed to track remodeling alone.

Builders rely mainly on completed-home sales, with possible adjacent businesses
Homebuilding revenue is more directly connected to building and selling homes. D.R. Horton’s FY2025 report also describes rental, residential lot development, financial services and other activities. In that fiscal year, homebuilding accounted for 92% of its $34.3 billion in consolidated revenue. That is a company-specific mix, not a fixed proportion for all builders.
What do company examples show?
Home Depot trades as HD on the NYSE. The company describes itself as the world’s largest home improvement retailer based on FY2025 net sales and reported $164.7 billion in net sales and $14.2 billion in earnings for that fiscal year. Home Depot FY2025 annual report D.R. Horton trades as DHI on the NYSE and NYSE Texas. Its FY2025 report describes a range of homes for entry-level through luxury buyers, including detached and attached homes. D.R. Horton FY2025 annual report

Those figures are not a like-for-like size or performance comparison: they describe different companies and reporting line items. Revenue and earnings also do not, by themselves, establish whether either stock is attractively valued. Lowe’s official investor materials identify a 2025 annual report; use that filing for company-specific figures rather than inferring them from another retailer’s results. A retailer’s sales are linked to purchases for existing homes and projects. A builder’s sales are linked more directly to homes constructed and sold. That difference changes the channel through which housing conditions reach each business; it does not establish that one category is safer, more profitable or a better investment.

For a retailer, examine reported sales trends, merchandise and service mix, inventory and margins. For a builder, examine orders, closings, prices, incentives, construction costs and land exposure. Then consider each company’s customer mix, geographic footprint and balance-sheet structure. These are questions to investigate in company filings, not sector-wide conclusions.
How should investors compare a specific retailer and builder?
- Identify what drives reported revenue. Separate merchandise and service sales from completed-home sales and any adjacent business lines.
- Match indicators to the business model. Use sales and ticket measures for retail operations; use orders, closings, pricing and cancellation data for builders.
- Examine operating and capital exposure. Review inventory, costs, land or lot positions, and balance-sheet disclosures in each company’s filings.
- Check customer and geographic mix. A company’s buyers, product range and operating footprint can shape its exposure; do not assume every firm in a category is alike.
- Keep business performance separate from stock valuation. Company revenue or earnings describe operations, not whether its shares are cheap or likely to outperform. That requires valuation and investment analysis beyond these business-model differences.
What the category labels cannot tell you
“Home improvement” and “homebuilder” are useful starting points, not complete investment theses. They do not establish relative safety, valuation, returns or current demand conditions. Those judgments require company-specific filings and current market information. Fiscal-year labels also matter: the Home Depot figures above are for FY2025, while D.R. Horton’s FY2025 ended September 30, 2025. Home Depot FY2024 Form 10-K D.R. Horton FY2025 Form 10-K
