Home Depot vs. Lowe’s Stock: Which Is Better for Long-Term Investors?

Home Depot (NYSE: HD) is the stronger choice for investors prioritizing operating scale, professional-customer reach and absolute cash generation. Lowe’s (NYSE: LOW) is the more compelling candidate for investors who place unusual weight on a longer record of annual dividend increases. Neither stock is automatically the better investment at every price. Your decision should combine business quality with the current share price, forward earnings multiple, free-cash-flow yield, leverage and a realistic view of housing and renovation demand.

The latest fiscal-year figures show a much larger Home Depot business and a modest profitability advantage, while Lowe’s retains the dividend-history edge. The evidence supports a conditional verdict: Home Depot for scale and cash generation; Lowe’s for dividend-growth longevity, provided its valuation and payout remain acceptable.

Comparable-sales signal Not stated in the cited Home Depot figures Positive 0.2% in fiscal 2025 Lowe’s posted slight comparable-sales growth, but one year is not a durable trend.
Store footprint More than 2,300 stores Smaller store base; an exact comparable count was not stated in the cited figures Home Depot’s network creates reach and distribution advantages, especially with professional customers.
Fiscal 2026 EPS outlook Approximately flat to 4.0% growth Not stated in the cited figures The guidance is modest and shows why valuation matters when expected growth is limited.

Home Depot’s fiscal 2025 annual report also recorded $14.2 billion in net earnings, $3.7 billion of capital expenditures, $5.0 billion of long-term-debt repayment and approximately $5.5 billion of aggregate cash consideration for the GMS acquisition. Its inventory turnover declined to 4.4 times from 4.7 times in fiscal 2024. Those details matter because acquisitions, investment spending and working-capital efficiency affect how much reported profit can ultimately be returned to shareholders.

Why Home Depot has the scale advantage

Home Depot’s sales base is materially larger and its network exceeds 2,300 stores. Scale can lower purchasing costs, spread technology and logistics expenses across more revenue, and support a wider assortment. It also gives the company more opportunities to serve contractors and other professional customers whose baskets are typically larger and more frequent than a single do-it-yourself project.

The company’s strategic emphasis is increasingly tied to professional customers and the integration of GMS, an acquisition intended to deepen reach in construction-supply categories. Integration brings potential cross-selling and distribution benefits, but it also creates execution risk: management must combine systems, retain customers and achieve the expected efficiencies without allowing debt or operating complexity to rise faster than cash generation.

Lowe’s is not a niche business. Management describes a roughly $1 trillion home-improvement sector that remains fragmented, leaving room for share gains. However, the smaller starting base means that comparable execution mistakes can have a larger effect on results, while the company has less absolute cash to absorb a prolonged downturn or a major strategic misstep.

Profitability: a modest but meaningful Home Depot lead

Home Depot reported a 13.1% adjusted operating margin for fiscal 2025, compared with 12.1% for Lowe’s. The difference indicates that Home Depot converted a larger portion of sales into operating profit under each company’s adjusted presentation.

Do not read the gap as a laboratory-grade comparison. Adjusted operating margin is a non-GAAP measure, and each retailer may exclude different items or define adjustments differently. A careful investor should read both reconciliations, check whether acquisition, restructuring or impairment costs were removed, and then compare the trend over several years rather than one period.

Home Depot’s adjusted margin also declined from 13.8% in fiscal 2024. A lower margin can reflect promotions, wage and freight pressure, mix changes, integration costs or weaker fixed-cost absorption when sales slow. The key question is whether management can stabilize margins while investing for professional-customer growth. Lowe’s margin level was lower in the latest year, but a smaller gap does not by itself make the business inferior if productivity improvements produce faster future earnings growth.

Cash generation and capital allocation

The companies disclose different cash measures. Home Depot reported $16.3 billion of cash flow from operations, while Lowe’s reported $7.7 billion of free cash flow. Operating cash flow is the cash produced before capital expenditures; free cash flow generally subtracts capital spending, although exact definitions can vary. Comparing the figures as if they were identical would overstate the precision of the analysis.

Home Depot’s annual report shows how that operating cash was allocated: $3.7 billion went to capital expenditures, $9.2 billion to dividends, $5.0 billion to repayment of long-term debt, and approximately $5.5 billion of aggregate cash consideration funded the GMS acquisition. This combination demonstrates substantial capacity, but it also shows that cash can be committed to several priorities at once. Future returns depend on whether acquisitions and stores generate returns above their cost of capital, not merely on the size of the cash-flow headline.

Lowe’s returned $2.6 billion through dividends and reported $7.7 billion of free cash flow. Free cash flow is the more directly relevant pool for dividends and buybacks, yet investors should inspect the company’s reconciliation for working-capital swings, capitalized software, restructuring payments and other adjustments. A single year of strong or weak cash conversion should not determine the investment decision.

Buybacks, debt and flexibility

Share repurchases can increase per-share earnings when the stock is bought below intrinsic value, but they destroy value when management overpays. Review the number of diluted shares over time, the average repurchase price and whether buybacks were funded with new borrowing.

Debt deserves the same discipline. Home Depot’s disclosed debt repayment is a positive capital-allocation action, but the GMS transaction and the broader interest-rate environment still affect leverage risk. For Lowe’s, compare net debt with operating cash flow, interest expense coverage and the maturity schedule. Neither company’s fiscal filings provide a current market valuation snapshot, so balance-sheet conclusions should be updated with the latest quarterly report.

Which is the better dividend stock?

Lowe’s has the longer annual dividend-increase history. A September 2026 Kiplinger review described the streak as roughly half a century and reported a 4% quarterly-payout increase to $1.25 in May 2026. Because dividend declarations can change, confirm the latest board announcement before relying on that figure.

Home Depot’s record is shorter than Lowe’s on this measure, but its larger business produces a much greater absolute dividend pool. The company raised its quarterly dividend 1.3% to $2.33 in February 2026, equivalent to $9.32 on an annualized basis at that rate. A slower increase from a larger base can still deliver substantial income growth if earnings and cash flow expand.

Dividend durability is more than a streak. Test four items:

  • Coverage: compare dividends with normalized free cash flow and earnings, not only with one unusually strong year.
  • Balance-sheet capacity: determine whether debt service leaves room for dividends during a housing slowdown.
  • Business cyclicality: home-improvement sales can weaken when homeowners delay projects, transactions fall or financing costs rise.
  • Management priorities: acquisitions, stores, technology and buybacks compete with dividends for cash.

An investor seeking the longest demonstrated pattern of annual increases may favor Lowe’s. An investor seeking the larger current cash engine may favor Home Depot. Yield, payout ratio and five-year dividend-growth rate must be calculated from the share prices and declarations available when you buy; they are not permanent characteristics of either ticker.

Growth prospects and strategic execution

Home Depot: professional customers and GMS integration

Home Depot’s strategy centers on expanding its relationship with professional customers while integrating GMS. Professionals can generate recurring demand across building materials, maintenance and renovation projects, potentially making revenue less dependent on occasional do-it-yourself purchases. The opportunity is attractive because a larger professional basket can improve store productivity and distribution economics.

The risks are equally concrete. Construction activity is cyclical, contractors are sensitive to credit conditions, and an acquisition can underperform if customer retention, technology integration or cost synergies disappoint. Watch professional-sales growth, gross margin, integration charges, inventory levels and management’s return-on-invested-capital commentary.

Lowe’s: the Total Home strategy

Lowe’s presents Total Home as a plan to increase professional-customer penetration, improve productivity and expand the relationship across projects. The strategy can raise customer lifetime value if installation, project services and product categories work together rather than operate as isolated transactions.

Execution should be judged through comparable sales, market-share trends, adjusted margin, inventory productivity and the cost of acquiring and serving customers. The reported 0.2% positive comparable sales in fiscal 2025 is encouraging but too small to establish a multi-year growth trajectory. Investors need several periods of evidence that productivity gains are translating into durable earnings and cash flow.

Shared industry risks

Both retailers are exposed to the same broad economic forces. Housing turnover affects remodeling activity, because homeowners often undertake larger projects around purchases or sales. Higher interest rates can reduce transactions and make financing projects more expensive. Consumer confidence, employment, wage growth and credit availability influence discretionary repairs and upgrades.

Input costs create a second set of risks. Lumber, appliances, fixtures and other materials can experience commodity inflation or deflation, while labor and freight costs affect margins. Trade policy can alter product costs, sourcing decisions and retail prices. Neither company provides a reliable single forecast for future share returns; their filings instead describe uncertainty across these variables.

Because the businesses sell many essential repair items as well as discretionary project goods, demand will not move uniformly. A storm, housing shortage or aging-home trend can support certain categories while high rates suppress larger renovations. Diversification within the stores reduces, but does not eliminate, cyclicality.

Valuation is the tie-breaker

Operating comparisons cannot tell you which stock will deliver the better return from today’s price. Before buying, record the following for both HD and LOW using the same date and fiscal-year convention:

  1. Share price and market capitalization: use the closing price on your decision date and account for diluted shares.
  2. Forward price-to-earnings ratio: divide the price by a clearly identified next-12-month or next-fiscal-year EPS estimate. Do not mix Home Depot’s reported diluted EPS with Lowe’s adjusted EPS without understanding the adjustments.
  3. Free-cash-flow yield: divide normalized free cash flow by enterprise value or equity value, and state which denominator you use.
  4. Dividend yield and payout: calculate the annualized declared dividend from the current price, then compare it with normalized earnings and free cash flow.
  5. Leverage: review gross debt, cash, net debt, lease obligations and interest coverage from the latest filings.
  6. Growth assumptions: write down the sales, margin and EPS growth embedded in analyst estimates. A low multiple is not automatically cheap if earnings are expected to fall.

Use a range of assumptions rather than one target price. Model a normal housing environment, a weak renovation cycle and a stronger recovery. The stock with the better business may still be the worse purchase if its valuation already discounts years of flawless execution.

Which stock fits which investor?

Choose Home Depot when scale and cash generation lead your checklist

  • You value the larger sales platform and extensive store network.
  • You want greater absolute operating cash flow and dividend capacity.
  • You believe professional-customer expansion and GMS integration can produce attractive returns.
  • You accept that the current margin trend and acquisition execution require monitoring.

Choose Lowe’s when dividend-growth history leads your checklist

  • You place a premium on the longer annual-increase record.
  • You believe Total Home and productivity initiatives can close or reverse the profitability gap.
  • You are comfortable with a smaller operating base and need the valuation to compensate for execution risk.
  • You verify that the payout remains covered by normalized cash flow at your purchase price.

Hold off or split the position when the evidence is mixed

There is no requirement to choose one retailer immediately. If both valuations look demanding, wait for a better entry point or keep the position size small. If you cannot establish a clear advantage after normalizing cash flow and debt, owning both can reduce company-specific risk while preserving exposure to the home-improvement sector. That approach does not remove housing or interest-rate risk, so it should not replace broader portfolio diversification.

A practical review checklist before you buy

  1. Download the latest annual and quarterly reports for both companies.
  2. Reconcile adjusted operating income, adjusted EPS and free cash flow to the companies’ reported GAAP figures.
  3. Separate maintenance capital spending from growth investments where disclosure allows.
  4. Track comparable sales, professional-customer growth, inventory turnover and gross margin for at least several quarters.
  5. Read debt maturities, lease commitments and acquisition disclosures rather than relying on a single leverage ratio.
  6. Confirm the latest dividend declaration, ex-dividend date and share count.
  7. Calculate valuation multiples with the same earnings basis and the same market-date price.
  8. Write down the event that would invalidate your thesis, such as sustained margin erosion, failed integration or an uncovered payout.

Bottom line: Home Depot for scale, Lowe’s for dividend history

Home Depot currently offers the stronger operating-scale and cash-generation profile. Its larger revenue base, higher reported adjusted operating margin and greater absolute cash resources give it the clearer advantage for investors focused on business capacity and professional-customer reach.

Lowe’s offers the stronger dividend-growth-history argument. Its longer record of annual increases can appeal to income investors, but that record does not guarantee future raises or superior total returns. The payout, balance sheet and valuation still have to pass a current review.

The defensible long-term choice is therefore conditional: select Home Depot when scale and cash generation matter most, select Lowe’s when dividend-growth longevity matters most, and let the price you pay determine whether either stock is attractive today.
