Neither option is always cheaper. A home battery gives one household direct use of stored energy, but requires a suitable installation and upfront investment. A community battery is shared infrastructure; you may be able to benefit without owning solar or buying a battery, but only if a local project and its retailer or operator offer terms that include you. In Australia, the deciding questions are the installed home-system quote, your tariff and energy use, and the community project’s actual eligibility and bill arrangements.
What is the difference?
A home battery is installed at a household premises, usually to store rooftop solar for later use. A community battery is a larger asset connected to the local electricity system or linked to an energy scheme. It can be owned by a network business, council, community group, retailer or another party. The name describes shared storage and its local context; it does not by itself promise community ownership, free access, a discount or a right for a nearby customer to draw stored electricity.

| Question | Home battery | Community battery |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays for or owns the asset? | The household typically pays the installed cost, less any applicable support, and owns or contracts for the system. | An owner or operator finances or owns the project; an individual customer may not buy a physical share. |
| Who can use it? | It directly serves the premises where it is installed. | Access depends on the project’s location, eligible customers and retailer or operator arrangement. |
| How could it affect a bill? | It can store surplus solar or, where the system and tariff allow, charge at lower-price times and supply energy later. | It may shift shared solar or provide network services; the customer’s benefit depends on the project’s tariff, credit or other terms. |
| Does it provide backup? | Only if configured for backup; system limits and selected circuits determine what stays powered. | Do not assume it backs up each participating home. Confirm whether the project can island and what customer service it provides. |
| Who controls operation? | The household, unless it joins a virtual power plant (VPP), lease or managed service. | The owner or operator schedules the asset under the project, retailer and grid arrangements. |
Which option costs less?
There is no reliable universal price comparison. A home quote is for a system installed at a particular property; a community battery’s project cost is not the price a household pays to participate. Even cost-per-capacity figures for infrastructure do not reveal a project’s net value, customer tariff or bill savings.
What the available cost comparison shows
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency’s (ARENA) November 2024 Community Battery Market Snapshot reports the following total project cost per Wh. The figures cover different project types and assumptions, so they illustrate a wide spread rather than like-for-like retail offers.

| Case in ARENA’s comparison | Total project cost per Wh | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Large-scale battery based on ARENA’s 2022 funding round | $0.64/Wh | ARENA’s funding-round comparison; not a household purchase quote. |

| Lowest-cost community battery case | $0.73/Wh | One of the community-battery cases included in the snapshot. |
| Average of below-median community battery costs | $0.80/Wh | ARENA’s reported category, not a customer tariff. |
| Assumed installed Tesla Powerwall 2 | $1.04/Wh | ARENA assumes an installed price of $14,000 for 13.5 kWh; this is not a current quote. |
| Weighted-average community battery | $1.79/Wh | ARENA’s weighted average for the community-battery cases in the snapshot. |
| Highest-cost community battery case | $4.10/Wh | Highest case in the snapshot, not a typical or universal project cost. |
ARENA cautions that installation costs vary greatly and that its comparison does not show a project’s net value, including financial and non-financial benefits. In that analysis, “community battery” refers to battery size and does not necessarily mean the project delivers local community outcomes. Treat the figures as a dated infrastructure comparison, not as a prediction of your installed home price or the cost of joining a local scheme.
Home-battery payback depends on the household
The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) reported an expected average Australian home-battery payback period of 8.3 years as at 2024, compared with 10 years in 2022 and 19 years in 2016. This is a market average, not a promise of return for an individual household. Government energy guidance warns that savings may not cover a battery’s purchase cost within its warranty lifetime.
For a useful household estimate, compare a current installed quote and your interval electricity data with your retailer’s import and export rates, likely battery cycling and the warranty. A battery’s usable capacity is not the same as its rated capacity, and neither is the same as its power output: kWh measures energy, while kW measures how quickly energy can be delivered. The value also changes with solar generation, household consumption, system losses, installation work, inverter compatibility and the operating contract.

Can you access one if you rent or do not have solar?
If you rent
A home battery is attached to a particular premises, so installation depends on the property being suitable and on having permission to carry out the work. A renter should not assume they can install a permanent system independently; discuss the proposal with the property owner and installer before seeking a quote. A community battery may be an alternative, but being nearby does not automatically make a renter eligible. Ask the project or retailer which customer classes can sign up and how any benefit appears on the bill.
If you do not have rooftop solar
Community batteries are intended to make some benefits of shared storage available beyond households with their own panels. The Australian Government’s Community Batteries for Household Solar program describes access to renewable energy for people unable to install panels as one of its aims. That is a program goal, not a guarantee that every project accepts every customer or offers the same rate.
A home battery can also be operated using electricity from the grid at lower-price times and used when prices are higher, if the equipment, tariff and contract support that approach. However, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program applies to qualifying systems connected to new or existing solar PV. A household without solar should check the current eligibility rules before assuming an installation will qualify for that support.

Check the local project, not just the map pin
The national Community Batteries for Household Solar program is intended to install 400 batteries across Australia. DCCEEW says the batteries can store excess solar for households to use in peak periods; lower bills, greater solar access, lower emissions and less grid pressure are stated program aims. The Australian Energy Regulator describes typical community-scale capacity as around 100 kW to 5 MW, potentially serving several hundred nearby homes and businesses. Some projects connect in front of the meter; shared systems behind the meter also exist.
The program’s project list includes operational examples such as Ausgrid’s Bondi battery (412 kWh, operational from 25 June 2024), Endeavour Energy’s Bidwill project (440 kWh, from 8 April 2025), Energex’s Birkdale project (180 kWh, from 7 May 2025) and Noosa Shire Council’s Noosaville project (360 kWh, from 29 May 2026). The list also includes projects still in progress. Capacity and status do not tell you whether a particular household can participate or what it will save; check the current program listing and the project’s customer terms.

Home batteries: greater direct use, conditional backup
With rooftop solar, a home battery can charge from daytime surplus and discharge when household demand exceeds solar generation. Depending on the tariff and system arrangement, it may also shift grid charging from lower-price periods to later use. Those uses can reduce grid purchases, but the result depends on the household’s load, solar output, tariff, battery size and losses.

Backup is a separate design choice, not an automatic property of having a battery. Ask which circuits and loads can run during an outage, what system limits apply and whether the installed configuration provides backup at all.
Community batteries: shared system value, project-specific customer value
A shared battery may absorb local excess solar, supply energy at peak times or help manage local grid constraints. The AER notes potential benefits for customers and the electricity system, alongside commercial and regulatory barriers such as project costs, limited access to some revenue streams and low consumer awareness. Where the asset is sited and how it is operated affect the outcome; a local battery does not itself establish a household’s bill credit, energy entitlement or outage protection.

A VPP coordinates participating batteries. It may add value by allowing an operator to use a household battery to support the broader system, but the customer gives up some control and relies on the operator’s performance and contract. In a 2026 inquiry release, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said households with batteries were achieving savings, particularly through VPPs, while warning that VPPs are complex and customers bear much of the risk of operator performance and receiving the expected benefits. The ACCC also reported a 107 per cent rise in consumer reports about household batteries and new energy services over the previous 12 months, including reports of unsuitable systems, faulty installations, poor performance and difficulty resolving issues. These reports are a reason to check providers and contracts, not evidence that all providers are unreliable.

What to check before deciding
For a home battery
- Get an itemised installed quote that accounts for site work, system size and compatibility with existing solar PV or inverter equipment.
- Check the system’s usable capacity, warranty, product eligibility and installer credentials against current official requirements.
- Decide whether outage backup matters, and get the backup configuration, supported circuits and limits in writing.
- Compare your import and export tariff, usage pattern and likely cycling rather than relying on a generic payback figure.
- If considering a VPP, lease or managed service, check who controls charging and discharging, the contract length, payment conditions, data access and exit terms.
For a community battery
- Ask who owns and operates the battery and whether it is operational or still in progress.
- Confirm the service area, eligible customer types and whether renters or households without solar can enroll.
- Request the actual tariff, bill credit or other customer benefit, including any charges, contract length and conditions.
- Clarify how the asset is controlled, what customer data is used, whether participation affects energy plans, and where complaints go.
- Ask directly whether the project offers household backup; do not infer it from the battery’s presence in the neighbourhood.
How the Australian rebate affects the comparison
As of 4 October 2026, the Australian Government says eligible households, businesses and community organisations can receive an upfront discount of around 30 per cent on qualifying battery systems from 5 kWh to 100 kWh. The current program page says its latest changes commenced on 1 May 2026. Eligibility depends on usable capacity, eligible products and installations, certificate calculations and the scheme’s current rules. The discount may be passed through by accredited sellers or installers, or claimed directly through the Renewable Energy Certificate Registry route described by the program.
Do not treat the headline discount as automatic: verify the product, installer and installation against the current program requirements, and check whether state or territory support can be combined. The federal program’s solar-connection requirement also means it should not be assumed to support an off-grid-from-solar battery purchase.
