Open the panel and select Show map to inspect how commissioned Matter devices connect over Thread or Wi‑Fi, which devices route traffic, and the paths and signal-strength information shown between them. It is a network-topology view, not the geographic map used for device locations.
How to open the Matter network map
-
In Home Assistant, open the Matter panel.
-
Select Show map.
Home Assistant announced the feature in its 2026.9 release, published September 2, 2026. If your installed Matter Server is too old to support the map, Home Assistant displays a compatibility message. The release announcement does not specify a minimum Matter Server version.
What the map tells you
The map visualizes connections among commissioned Matter devices and shows the route from Home Assistant to each device. It distinguishes Thread from Wi‑Fi links and identifies network roles such as routers, border routers, and battery-powered end devices.
-
Link color: identifies the transport—Thread or Wi‑Fi.

This makes the view useful when you want to trace a device’s route or understand which network equipment and device roles appear in its connection path. Home Assistant’s June 2026 Matter overview also discusses roles, Thread routing hops, discovered border routers, Wi‑Fi access points, and connection quality. For this newly surfaced in-app map, however, the September release notes define color as transport; do not read its colors as a connection-quality scale.
Is special hardware required?
The map is a software view of the Matter network, and Home Assistant does not describe additional hardware as a requirement to open it. A Thread border router is relevant if you are building or operating a Thread network, but it is not a stated prerequisite for viewing the map. Home Assistant names its Connect ZBT-2 as one example of Thread border-router hardware when used with the OpenThread Border Router app.

Why the Matter map may be missing
If you cannot open the view, first check whether your installed Matter Server supports it. Home Assistant says an unsupported older server results in a message on the page, but its announcement does not publish a minimum version. The release notes also place the feature in Home Assistant 2026.9; they do not establish availability in a particular earlier beta build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not confuse it with Home Assistant’s location maps
Home Assistant uses “map” for several different features. The Matter map depicts connectivity and network topology; the location map displays geographic information such as the home zone, entities, other zones, and geolocation sources.

The configurable Map dashboard introduced in Home Assistant 2024.4 lets users create separate location-map dashboards with different entities and configurations—for example, maps for family, cars, or pets. Home Assistant said existing map integrations would be migrated on upgrade. That dashboard change is separate from the Matter network map.
For the location-oriented card’s requirements and options, consult Home Assistant’s Map card documentation; for the dashboard change, see the 2024.4 release notes.
