Use a seasonal promotion when shoppers already understand the offer and a clear, time-limited incentive can help them act. Many campaigns can use both: helpful content meets a real audience need, and a relevant offer gives ready buyers a next step. There is no established universal ROI winner between the two.
What is the difference between holiday content and a seasonal promotion?
Holiday content marketing is useful, entertaining, or informative material tied to a holiday or season: for example, a gift guide, seasonal how-to, planning checklist, recipe, or product comparison. It should answer a need the audience has, rather than simply dressing up a sales pitch in holiday language.

A seasonal promotion is a time-bounded incentive associated with a season or event, such as a discount, bundle, gift with purchase, or shipping offer. Its dates, eligibility, limitations, and terms should be clear.

Should you run a holiday sale or create holiday content?
Start with the job the campaign needs to do and what your audience is ready for. A useful comparison includes:
- Objective: Are you aiming for awareness, education, trust, qualified demand, a sale, inventory movement, or retention?
- Audience readiness: Are people researching, comparing, or already prepared to buy?
- Lead time: Content needs time for planning, production, and discovery. Promotions need offer approval, inventory or service capacity, fulfilment planning, and any necessary legal review.
- Useful life: Could the content help people beyond a short offer window, or is its value tied to a particular moment?
- Economics: Can the business support the discount, fulfilment costs, and demand? What will producing or distributing the content cost?
- Audience and geography: Is the occasion relevant to the people and market you serve, and what information or trust signals matter there?
- Measurement: Which metrics reflect the role of each tactic? Measure intended reach, engagement, or assistance for content, and response and commercial outcomes for an offer. Account for other campaign activity before attributing results.
Choose content when people need help deciding
Lead with content when customers need advice or inspiration, the topic raises recurring questions, or discovery, trust, and product understanding matter. It is also the better fit when the business can publish early enough for people to find and use the material before the relevant moment.

Choose a promotion when the offer solves a purchase barrier
Lead with a promotion when the audience understands the product and is weighing price or timing, and the business can make a genuine offer with clear terms, adequate capacity, and sound economics. The offer should have a meaningful window for the audience and be fulfilled as promised.
Combine them when the offer is a useful next step
A guide can help readers compare options, with an honestly described offer placed where it assists the decision. Content can also be valuable without any offer. Do not disguise a promotion as independent advice or add a discount solely because a holiday is approaching.

Do seasonal promotions work better than content marketing?
The available evidence does not establish that either approach universally performs better, or provide a controlled cross-industry comparison of their return on investment. Survey findings can help explain why price, confidence, and convenience may matter, but they do not prove that a particular campaign tactic caused a purchase.
For context, a Google Consumer Survey conducted in August 2025 found that promotions and discounts influenced decisions for 60% of surveyed US consumers and 55% of surveyed European consumers. Google describes samples in the US and EU5; these figures are not universal consumer estimates. In the same survey, long delivery times were cited as a reason for cart abandonment by 72% of US and 65% of European online shoppers. Those are reported reasons, not evidence that a particular promotion or content campaign changes abandonment rates (Think with Google, October 2025).

A separate 2026 report from the Ibotta Performance Network says promotions were the top stated influence on holiday purchases for 37% of shoppers surveyed. That is Ibotta’s finding in the context of its report on household financial pressure and retail shopping, not a universal statistic (Ibotta 2026 Holiday Outlook).

The practical takeaway is not that every business should discount. A promotion may appeal to price-conscious buyers, while useful information, confidence, and convenient fulfilment can also contribute to a decision. Google reports differences in the confidence signals emphasized by surveyed US and European consumers; localize product information and creative rather than applying those findings as universal rules (Think with Google, October 2025).

When should you start holiday marketing?
Plan around your audience’s calendar and your own production and fulfilment lead times, not just the holiday date. Gartner reported in September 2024 that nearly one-third of consumers surveyed planned to start winter holiday shopping before November. That finding describes Gartner’s survey and the 2024 shopping cycle; it is not a timeless estimate for every market or category. Gartner analyst Kassi Socha recommended beginning holiday planning in Q1, revisiting plans throughout the year, and launching execution in Q3 (Gartner, September 16, 2024).
Google Ad Manager says seasonal traffic and CPM increases generally begin in September, peak in late November, and return to normal in January. This is guidance about publisher advertising, not a universal sales calendar for retailers or service businesses (Google Ad Manager Help).
For a 2026 planning perspective, Circana reported that nearly half of consumers browsed before Thanksgiving in 2025 and 44% planned to shop earlier. These figures appear in its 2026 holiday media report as indicators for advertisers; browsing is not the same as purchasing (Circana, September 23, 2026). Treat annual timing research as a prompt to check your own audience and market, not as a fixed launch date.

How to combine useful content with a promotion
- Choose an audience task. Identify a real seasonal question, such as how to compare gifts, prepare for an event, or choose a product for a particular need.
- Make the content genuinely helpful. Provide guidance or comparisons readers can use even if they do not buy immediately. Distinguish advice from sponsored or promotional material.
- Add an offer only if it fits. Make the promotion a relevant next step rather than the reason for the content. State its dates, eligibility, exclusions, and other material terms clearly.
- Check the promise operationally. Confirm stock or service capacity, delivery expectations, and fulfilment before promoting an offer. Convenience can matter alongside price, and surveyed shoppers cited long delivery times as a reason for abandoning carts.
- Measure each part against its purpose. Assess content using its intended reach, engagement, or assistance measures; assess the offer using response and commercial outcomes. Avoid claiming that either caused a result without accounting for other activity.
How should the seasonal plan reflect your audience?
A generic holiday calendar is not a substitute for audience relevance. Consider which occasions your customers recognize, the time they need to research or receive a product, and what makes them confident enough to act. Google’s survey findings on confidence signals vary between its surveyed US and European markets, so the figures should inform local questions rather than be copied across geographies as universal facts.
Likewise, distinguish interest from purchase: Circana’s reported pre-Thanksgiving browsing figure describes browsing, not completed sales. Use the signal to consider when people may want information, then evaluate your own campaign against the outcome it was designed to achieve.
