Reviewers describe a broad, stable-feeling platform and useful protection over distance, with some capacity for longer uptempo efforts. Its considerable weight and snug, low-volume forefoot limit it: it suits runners who want a stable, protective ride for long miles, and it is a poor choice for anyone who wants a flexible, natural feel, a roomy toe box, or a light shoe for short fast sessions.
Who the Skyward X 2 suits and who should skip it
The shoe makes the most sense as a long-distance cruiser. Its high stack and carbon plate are the features that matter most on long, steady running, and they are also the features that make it heavy and firm.

- Good match: runners doing easy aerobic running, long runs, and recovery-paced mileage who want a cushioned, protective platform underfoot.
- Possible match: runners who occasionally run longer uptempo efforts and want a plated, substantial ride rather than a racing-style shoe.
- Poor match: runners who want a flexible, natural ride; anyone with a wide forefoot or a preference for a roomy toe box; and anyone who needs a light shoe for short, fast sessions.
Treat the shoe as a specialist for long running rather than an all-purpose speed trainer. Reviewers consistently place it at the cruiser end of the market, and it should be judged on that basis.
Specifications: what HOKA claims and what testers measured
HOKA’s official men’s listing for Malaysia gives a 5 mm heel-to-toe drop, a 312 g listed weight, and a price of RM1,099. These are manufacturer figures on a regional page as accessed in 2026. They are not a universal price, and they do not guarantee identical specifications in every size or market.
#1 Best Overall
- Reflective details
- Zonal padded tongue
- Tongue lace loop
HOKA describes the update this way: “We’ve updated our carbon fiber plate to put runners in a more engaged stance, shaved off weight and stack height, and enlisted a comfort-driven upper with elevated materials.” That is the company’s statement of design intent. It is not an independent test result.
Independent figures differ because each reviewer weighed a different sample and measured using a different method. The table below keeps each figure tied to its publisher.
| Source (date of page or review) | Weight | Heel-to-toe drop | Heel stack | Forefoot stack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HOKA Malaysia, official men’s listing (accessed 2026) | 312 g, listed by manufacturer | 5 mm, listed by manufacturer | Not stated | Not stated |
| RunRepeat (July 6, 2026), test sample | 286 g (10.1 oz), measured | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
| RTINGS (2026), measured sample | 283.3 g (9.99 oz), measured | 6.7 mm, measured (the same page also lists HOKA’s advertised 5 mm) | 48.6 mm, measured | 41.9 mm, measured |
| Tom’s Guide (2026), US men’s size 9.5 sample | 10.4 oz, measured on that sample | Not stated | Not stated | Not stated |
The weight spread from about 283 g to 312 g is best read as normal variation between measurement methods and samples, with the manufacturer figure at the heavier end. Quote the figure that matches the source you are citing rather than blending them into one number.

Fit and toe box
Fit is the most important caveat for this shoe. RunRepeat describes a snug, secure fit and measured the toe-box width at 72.7 mm, slightly below its own lab average. Doctors of Running also describes a narrow, low-volume toe box.
In practice, runners with wide feet or those who like room to splay their toes should expect a tighter forefoot than they may be used to. Trying the shoe on before buying is the safest approach. Do not assume that a usual size will feel right, because the snug forefoot can change how a half size or a width feels in the toe.
Ride: stiffness and stability
The carbon plate and high stack create a stiff, rockered ride. RunRepeat’s 30-degree bend test required 23.0 N of force, compared with a 15.5 N average in its comparison set. A higher number means a stiffer shoe, so this is firmer than the average in that set.
Rank #3
- JACQUARD KNIT UPPER
- Lining Textile
RTINGS and Doctors of Running both describe the platform as stable-feeling for a shoe of this height. That is a description of how the shoe feels on a wide, high platform, not a medical or individualized stability recommendation. Runners with a specific gait concern should consult a qualified fitter or clinician.

Traction, breathability and lab results
RunRepeat’s traction test, run in its own lab, produced a 0.61 coefficient of friction, above its 0.53 comparison average. That is a single lab result, not a promise of grip on every surface or in every weather condition. The same review reports 74 BR breathability against a 75 BR average, which is close to typical for the set.
| Metric (RunRepeat, July 6, 2026) | Skyward X 2 | Comparison average in that review |
|---|---|---|
| Bending force at 30 degrees (stiffness) | 23.0 N (higher means stiffer) | 15.5 N |
| Traction coefficient of friction | 0.61 | 0.53 |
| Breathability | 74 BR | 75 BR |
What changed from the original Skyward X
HOKA says version 2 has an updated carbon-fiber plate, reduced weight and stack height, and a comfort-focused upper. RTINGS describes it as a refinement of the original’s high-stack, carbon-plated concept, with a new jacquard mesh upper and a lighter overall package. RunRepeat reports roughly a 9% weight reduction; the original’s exact weight is not stated in the sources consulted, so the percentage is the most precise comparison available.

- BREATHABLE WOVEN UPPER
- Lining Textile
The revision addresses the original’s heft, but reviewers still describe version 2 as heavy compared with many running shoes and more specialized than a versatile daily trainer. The second version keeps the max-stack, cruiser-first character of the first. Buyers who value the original’s extra stack, or who find it discounted, may reasonably prefer it. Check current prices for both before deciding on value.

Compare shoes on intended distance and pace, weight, firmness, toe-box volume, platform stability, and the price in your region. RTINGS offers two comparisons that are useful as reference points, though they are its own judgments rather than universal rankings.

ASICS Superblast 3
RTINGS describes the Superblast 3 as lighter and more versatile for faster training. If your priority is faster running or a shoe that handles more than long, easy mileage, it is the more natural comparison.
Best Value
HOKA Clifton 10
RTINGS describes the Clifton 10 as a simpler, lighter daily trainer. If you want a cushioned everyday shoe rather than a plated, substantial long-run platform, the Clifton is the logical alternative within HOKA’s range.
Where the Skyward X 2 fits
The Skyward X 2 may appeal more when long-run protection and a plated, substantial ride are the priorities. It is less suited to shoppers who put light weight, a roomy fit, or flexibility first.
Buying checklist
- Confirm the listed price in your own region. RM1,099 is the figure on HOKA’s Malaysia page in 2026 and does not apply elsewhere.
- Check the toe box first. If your forefoot is wide, the 72.7 mm measured toe width may feel restrictive.
- Decide whether you want a stiff, plated ride for long running. If you prefer a flexible feel, look at alternatives.
- Check live size, color, and availability before buying, as stock and sizing vary by market.
When you are ready to see the shoe, HOKA’s official product listing for your region is the most reliable place to confirm current specifications and price.
