Hogwarts Legacy is still an official single-player game. Warner Bros. Games’ FAQ states: “Hogwarts Legacy is a single player experience and does not have online or co-op gameplay.” The fan-made Hogwarts MP project can place multiple players in the same Hogwarts and Highlands world, synchronize spells and travel, and add proximity voice through community-hosted servers. It is not an official mode, and its shared-story and quest-progression systems are not complete. In practice, Hogwarts MP is a multiplayer sandbox/framework layered onto the PC game, not a finished cooperative version of the campaign.
Is Hogwarts Legacy multiplayer now?
No. The officially supported game remains single-player. Its campaign, exploration, combat and progression are designed for one character, and there is no built-in online or co-op option in the base game. That is separate from the fan-made Hogwarts MP project, which changes the experience by connecting several players through community-hosted servers.

The distinction matters because “multiplayer” can mean two very different things. An official co-op mode would normally let friends enter the same campaign, complete quests together and share reliable progression under the publisher’s support. Hogwarts MP instead provides a framework in which a server can place players together and script shared activities. It can make the world feel populated and cooperative, but it does not turn every single-player quest into a synchronized party mission.

A solo open-world action RPG
The official release is an open-world, single-player action RPG. You control one student, explore Hogwarts and the surrounding Highlands, learn spells, fight enemies and advance through the game’s content alone. Other people cannot join that world through an official online or co-op menu.

No shared campaign progression
Because there is no official online layer, the base game does not synchronize a campaign between two players. A friend cannot appear in your save as a second student, cast spells beside you in your instance or advance the same quest state with you. Ordinary PC mods do not change that fact unless they are part of a separate multiplayer framework such as Hogwarts MP.
What Hogwarts MP adds
Hogwarts MP introduces a shared-world layer. The feature set described by the project covers player presence, synchronized movement and combat, voice communication, and server-controlled gameplay systems. Each feature depends on the project build and on what the host enables, so the framework’s capabilities should not be confused with a guarantee that every server offers every activity.
Other players appear as full characters
Connected players can appear in the same environment as full characters rather than as menu-only contacts. The project describes synchronized appearance, gear, spells and wand-light effects. That means a group can explore Hogwarts and the Highlands while seeing one another’s visible equipment and magical actions.
This shared presence is the most immediate difference from the official game. A corridor, courtyard or Highlands route can contain several human-controlled characters instead of only the local player and the game’s non-player characters. The exact population depends on the server and the number of people connected.
Spells, brooms and creature mounts can synchronize
Hogwarts MP documents synchronized spells, broom flight and creature mounts. Players can therefore move and act together rather than merely standing in the same map. A group can fly in the same direction, travel through the world and use magic while the server keeps those actions visible to the other clients.
Synchronization does not mean that every single-player encounter has been redesigned for cooperative balance. It means the framework can transmit and present these actions in a shared session. Combat rules, available creatures and the way encounters are staged remain dependent on the server’s resources and scripts.
Proximity voice provides local communication
The project supports proximity voice. Normal speech is described as carrying roughly 25 metres, and push-to-talk is enabled by default. This creates a local audio model: players nearby can hear one another, while people farther away may not.

Push-to-talk being the default is relevant when planning a group session. Participants need a working microphone and must deliberately transmit speech rather than assuming an always-open channel. The approximately 25-metre range is a project description, not a promise that every network, server configuration or future build will behave identically.
Servers can script their own rules
Hogwarts MP is designed as a server-controlled framework. Server scripts can control or define systems such as:
- Weather, time and seasons.
- Non-player-character behavior and interactable objects.
- Economy and inventory rules.
- Roleplay systems and player-versus-player-style activities.
- Special activities such as duels, house-based play, beast care or other custom modes when a server provides the necessary scripts.
These are framework capabilities. A server operator may install only some of them, configure them differently or omit them altogether. Seeing a feature listed by the project does not establish that it is active on the particular server you join.
Servers support groups larger than a normal party
The project lists 32 players as the default server capacity and says servers can support up to 128 players. Capacity is a server figure, not a promise that a session will run at the maximum or that the experience will remain equally responsive at every population. The actual number of connected players depends on the host, configuration and current demand.
What does not change, or is still unfinished
The official game remains solo
Installing or using Hogwarts MP does not add an official online button to the base game. Warner Bros. Games’ published position remains that Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player experience without online or co-op gameplay. The multiplayer project is maintained by its community, outside that official support model.
There is no finished shared story
Hogwarts MP explicitly identifies shared story or quest progression as an incomplete feature. You should not describe it as “co-op Hogwarts Legacy” if that phrase implies that two players can reliably complete the entire original campaign together, with every objective and reward synchronized.
A server can still create cooperative activities or roleplay scenarios, and players can explore and fight side by side. The missing piece is a completed, dependable system that synchronizes the official campaign’s quest state from beginning to end. If your main goal is to play the Hogwarts Legacy story with a friend, the project does not currently establish that capability.

Server features are not universal
Quidditch, duels, houses, beast care, economy rules, roleplay and similar systems are server-built possibilities rather than guaranteed built-in modes. One host may provide a richly scripted experience while another may offer little beyond shared exploration and synchronized movement. Ask the operator which scripts and resources are installed before choosing a server.

Platform and setup requirements
The documented Hogwarts MP client setup targets Windows and the Steam or Epic Games edition of Hogwarts Legacy. Dedicated servers are documented for Windows x64 or Linux x86-64. These requirements narrow the practical use case: a console copy is not covered by the project’s stated client setup, and a Windows or Linux server must match the project’s server requirements.
Build and channel matching also matters. A client and server need compatible project versions and distribution channels to connect reliably. The project’s testing release is listed as version 1.9.1, published 16 October 2026. Changes made after that release should not be assumed to be present in the distributed testing build.
Pre-session checklist
- Confirm the client platform. Use a Windows installation of Hogwarts Legacy through the Steam or Epic Games edition documented by the project.
- Confirm the server platform. If you are hosting, use Windows x64 or Linux x86-64 as documented for dedicated servers.
- Match the project build. Check that the client and server are using compatible releases and the same channel. A mismatch can prevent joining even when the underlying game edition is correct.
- Check the server’s feature list. Ask which scripts and resources are active. Do not assume that a listed framework feature, such as duels, Quidditch, house systems or an economy, is enabled.
- Plan communication. Make sure each participant has a working microphone and understands that push-to-talk is enabled by default. Proximity voice is intended for nearby players rather than a universal party channel.
- Set expectations about progression. Treat the session as shared exploration, combat and server-defined activities unless the host documents a specific custom quest system. The official campaign is not established as a synchronized co-op story.
The project’s documentation should be treated as the authority for the exact installer, server files and launch procedure for the build you use. The available feature description establishes the platform and compatibility requirements above, but it does not provide a universal set of menu paths that applies to every host configuration.
How server-defined systems change the experience
Time, weather and seasons
A server can control environmental conditions rather than leaving every client to run an isolated local schedule. This makes a shared session feel coherent: players can experience the same weather, time of day or seasonal state. The presence of these systems still depends on the host’s scripts.

Non-player-character behavior and interactive objects can be adjusted by server resources. That gives hosts room to build roleplay spaces, events or custom rules, but it also means two servers may behave very differently in the same Hogwarts map.
Economy and inventory
Server-controlled economy and inventory systems can support persistent roleplay or custom progression. They should not be mistaken for a universal replacement for the official game’s save system. Ask how a particular server handles items, persistence and resets before investing time in a custom character.

Roleplay and PvP-style rules
Roleplay and player-versus-player-style systems are optional server-layer features. A host can define social roles, rules of engagement or competitive activities, while another can keep the session focused on cooperative travel and exploration. The framework enables those choices; it does not impose one shared ruleset across all servers.

The official single-player mode has a predictable ruleset because there is no external host deciding which systems are active. Hogwarts MP trades that consistency for social presence and customization. The server operator becomes part of the experience: configuration, installed resources, capacity and maintenance determine what players actually receive.
- Consistency: The official game provides one publisher-defined experience; Hogwarts MP varies from server to server.
- Social play: Hogwarts MP lets players see, hear and travel with others; the official mode does not.
- Content certainty: The official campaign is available as designed; Hogwarts MP does not provide a completed shared campaign.
- Scale: Hogwarts MP lists 32 players by default and up to 128 as a supported capacity, but real sessions may be smaller.
- Maintenance: The official mode follows the game’s supported release, while Hogwarts MP depends on community builds, matching versions and host scripts.
Official mod support is a separate system
CurseForge’s official Hogwarts Legacy Creator Kit supports PC mod creation and in-game discovery for content such as quests, dungeons, skins and cosmetics. That sanctioned modding system is separate from Hogwarts MP’s fan-made online framework.
Installing an ordinary official PC mod should therefore not be presented as adding multiplayer. A cosmetic, dungeon or quest created through the Creator Kit may change a single-player installation, but it does not by itself provide shared players, synchronized spells, voice chat or a server.
Which option fits your goal?
Choose the official game when the story is the priority
If you want the authored Hogwarts Legacy campaign, dependable solo progression and the game’s standard rules, use the official single-player mode. It is the only option of the two with an established one-player story experience.
Choose Hogwarts MP for shared exploration
If your priority is seeing friends as characters in Hogwarts, flying together, casting synchronized spells, using creature mounts or talking through proximity voice, Hogwarts MP provides those multiplayer-oriented capabilities on its documented PC setup.

Choose a server by its rules, not just its player count
A server advertising a large capacity may not provide the systems you want. Check its active scripts for roleplay, economy, PvP-style play, custom activities and progression behavior. A smaller, clearly configured server may be a better fit than one that simply advertises the maximum capacity.

Troubleshooting common misunderstandings
“I installed a PC mod, so why can’t my friend join?”
Most ordinary PC mods are not multiplayer frameworks. The official Creator Kit can produce quests, dungeons, skins and cosmetics without adding an online layer. Joining requires the Hogwarts MP project and a compatible community server, not merely any mod file.
“We can see each other, so why can’t we share every quest?”
Player visibility and synchronized actions are different from campaign synchronization. Hogwarts MP documents shared presence, spells and travel, while shared story or quest progression is not complete. Seeing another character does not establish that the official quest state is shared.
“The server advertises Quidditch or duels, but I cannot find them.”
Those activities are server-built possibilities. Confirm that the host installed and enabled the relevant resources and scripts. The framework’s feature list is not a guarantee that every server includes each mode.

“Why can’t I connect even though we own the same game?”
Check the documented client edition, Windows requirement and project build first. The Steam or Epic Games channel used by the client must be compatible with the server, and the project release must match closely enough for the connection to be accepted.
“Can we host 128 friends?”
The project lists 32 players by default and up to 128 as a possible server capacity. That is not a promise that every host, configuration or session will run at 128 players. Confirm the operator’s configured limit and practical capacity.
Current project status
Hogwarts MP lists testing release 1.9.1, published 16 October 2026. Because the project is community-maintained, version details and server resources matter when you plan a session. Changes made after that release should not be assumed to be included in the distributed testing build, so verify the build that your client and chosen server actually use.
The clearest way to describe the project today is a community multiplayer framework for shared Hogwarts and Highlands sessions. It adds human players, synchronized magical activity, mounts and proximity communication, while leaving server operators to define many rules and activities. It does not replace the official single-player campaign with a finished, publisher-supported co-op story.
