Minding Your Own Business is Hogwarts Legacy’s Haunted Hogsmeade Shop side quest. To unlock it, complete the main-story quest Fire and Vice, return to Hogsmeade, speak with Penny outside the vacant shop, and have 1,500 gold ready for Cassandra Mason. The quest leads through a cleaned-up shop, a mysterious chest, Fastidio’s cellar labyrinth, library and atrium puzzles, combat, and a final confrontation involving Cassandra Mason and Officer Singer.
Completing it gives you ownership of the Hogsmeade shop, three shopkeeper clothing items, and a choice of shop names. It is a substantial side quest rather than a short errand, but no authoritative source gives a dependable minute count. The quest was originally PlayStation-exclusive; the June 6, 2024 summer update made it available to players on all supported platforms.

What Minding Your Own Business is
Minding Your Own Business is the side quest commonly described as the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop quest. Its opening is easy to miss because it does not begin from a noticeboard or a standard quest-giver inside the castle. Penny, a house-elf, waits outside the vacant shop in Hogsmeade. Speaking with her starts the chain that sends you to Cassandra Mason, the person who controls the shop before you purchase it.

The quest combines a business transaction with a supernatural dungeon. You first deal with the shop itself, then investigate what is hidden beneath it. The lower section becomes a shifting, labyrinthine area associated with Fastidio. Expect environmental puzzles, exploration, and combat rather than a single conversation followed by an immediate reward.

The name can cause confusion because some guides use Haunted Hogsmeade Shop while the in-game quest title is Minding Your Own Business. They refer to the same quest.

The real unlock gate is Fire and Vice
The most important requirement is story progression. Finish Fire and Vice before looking for Penny. If you have not reached that Keeper-trial stage, the shop quest will not be ready even if your character is powerful enough and you are carrying enough money.
Level figures in online guides should be treated as comfort recommendations. The conflicting labels—18 in one quest database and 25 in PowerPyx—show that they are not a single official threshold. Your progress through Fire and Vice is the reliable gate; the suggested level simply indicates how demanding the dungeon and fights may feel.
You need 1,500 gold, not merely the story flag
Cassandra Mason’s purchase price is 1,500 gold. Reach the conversation with less than that amount and you cannot complete the acquisition until you raise the balance. The price is a quest objective, not an optional donation, so check your wallet before traveling to Hogsmeade.
How to start Minding Your Own Business
- Complete Fire and Vice. This establishes the required Keeper-trial progress.
- Travel to Hogsmeade. Go to the vacant shop associated with the quest rather than searching for a marker inside Hogwarts.
- Talk to Penny. The house-elf is standing outside the shop. Her conversation introduces the opportunity to buy the business.
- Meet Cassandra Mason. Follow the objective to Cassandra, who handles the sale and the next stage of the quest.
- Bring 1,500 gold. Pay the stated price so ownership can be transferred and the shop work can begin.
If Penny is not present or the objective does not appear, verify the story requirement first. The guide-level labels do not override the Fire and Vice gate, and the former PlayStation-only status is no longer a reason for the quest to be missing on other current platforms.

What you do during the quest
The objectives move from ordinary shop work into a full underground sequence. The order below follows the documented quest progression.
Repair and clean the vacant shop
After the purchase arrangements, you are asked to repair and clean the premises. This section establishes the shop as a usable location and separates the ownership decision from the dangerous discovery below it. Complete the cleaning and repair objectives before expecting the cellar investigation to open.

A mysterious chest becomes the trigger for the next phase. Interacting with it leads to the revelation that the property contains more than an abandoned storefront. Treat this as a story transition: once the chest objective is complete, the quest shifts from refurbishment to exploration.
Explore the cellar and Fastidio’s labyrinth
The area beneath the shop is described as Fastidio’s labyrinthine cellar. Its layout and atmosphere are intentionally different from a normal Hogsmeade errand. You must explore, follow the available path, and solve environmental obstacles while the quest reveals what is happening below the store.
Because the cellar includes both puzzles and combat, do not assume that reaching the entrance means the difficult part is over. The quest record specifically groups the underground section with the puzzle and confrontation sequence, so leave enough time to finish the complete run rather than planning around a quick return to town.

Complete the library and atrium puzzles
The documented objectives include a library/atrium puzzle sequence. These rooms are part of the dungeon progression, not optional collectibles. If your objective appears to pause after entering the lower area, look for the interactable or environmental route that advances the library and atrium sections instead of leaving the cellar prematurely.
The available evidence does not establish a single universal solution path or a timed puzzle limit. Guides that describe the quest as lengthy are referring to the combined exploration, puzzle, and combat stages, not to a published stopwatch requirement.
Fight through the encounter and confront Cassandra Mason
Combat is integrated into the cellar sequence, culminating in a confrontation with Cassandra Mason. The encounter is part of the quest’s documented story outcome, so defeating the opposition and completing the associated objectives is necessary before the shop reward is finalized.
Officer Singer’s intervention
Officer Singer becomes involved during the resolution. Her intervention is one of the quest’s recorded story beats and explains how the conflict around the shop is brought to a close. Finish the dialogue and resulting objectives before checking for ownership and clothing rewards.

The shop is a permanent ownership reward
The defining payoff is not a temporary discount or a single cash payout. Once the quest is complete, the shop belongs to you. This is why the 1,500-gold requirement matters: the purchase is folded directly into the quest’s ownership outcome.

Choose a shop name
You receive three naming pairs: Vesters and Venum, Cladwell and Brewster, or Stitches and Draughts. The choice is a naming decision, so select the pair you want displayed rather than expecting the game to rotate names later.
Penny’s hat decision
The elf-sized hat creates a separate character outcome. Give it to Penny and she becomes a free elf. Even after receiving her freedom, she may choose to continue working in the shop. Freedom and employment are therefore distinct parts of the result; the choice does not automatically remove her from the store.
Clothing items
The quest record lists the Shopkeeper’s Coat, Shopkeeper’s Top Hat, and Shopkeeper’s Ensemble. These are the named clothing rewards associated with the quest, in addition to the shop itself and the naming choice.
Does it award XP or count toward the side-quest challenge?
The quest record states that Minding Your Own Business does not count toward the Complete Side/Relationship Quests challenge and does not award XP. This unusual treatment is connected to the quest’s former exclusive-content status. Do not plan your leveling route around an experience payout or expect the completion counter for that challenge to increase.

There is no authoritative minute estimate. The available guides describe the quest as lengthy and list several distinct stages: the shop conversation and purchase, repairs and cleaning, the chest, cellar exploration, the Fastidio labyrinth, library and atrium puzzles, combat, and the Cassandra Mason confrontation with Officer Singer’s intervention.

The most accurate planning description is therefore a substantial side quest, not a fixed number of minutes. Your total time will vary with how quickly you navigate the dungeon, how much time you spend solving the environmental sections, and how efficiently you handle the fights. A guide that promises an exact duration is giving an individual estimate rather than an established game-wide measurement.
Plan for a complete dungeon session
- Set aside enough uninterrupted time to finish the cellar sequence after opening the chest.
- Carry at least 1,500 gold before starting the purchase conversation so the opening steps do not stall.
- Expect both puzzle-solving and combat; the quest is not only a shop-management scene.
- Use the objective marker and continue through the library and atrium stages before returning to the surface.
Platform and release-status history
Minding Your Own Business launched as PlayStation-exclusive content. That historical limitation is why older walkthroughs sometimes say that only PlayStation players can access the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop quest.
GameSpot reported on June 6, 2024 that the summer update expanded the quest to all players. The official Hogwarts Legacy site now lists the game on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch, so current players on those platforms should not treat the old exclusivity warning as a present-day requirement. If you are reading an older guide, check whether it predates the summer 2024 update before assuming the platform information is still valid.
Troubleshooting common access problems
Penny is not outside the shop
Recheck Fire and Vice. The quest’s documented progression gate is the story stage, not simply a character level. If that Keeper-trial quest is unfinished, continue the main story and return to Hogsmeade afterward.
The purchase cannot be completed
Check your gold total. Cassandra Mason’s price is 1,500 gold, and the transaction cannot proceed without it. Raise the balance and revisit the objective rather than searching for a different quest trigger.
Your guide gives a different level
That discrepancy is expected. A quest database recommends level 18, while PowerPyx lists level 25. Neither figure is established as a hard lock in the available documentation. Use the number as a combat-readiness suggestion and prioritize the story gate.
An older guide says the quest is unavailable on your platform
Check its publication date. The PlayStation-only limitation describes the original release period. The June 6, 2024 summer update made the quest available across the currently supported PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch versions.
