A hockey goalie’s primary job is to protect the net and stop shots. Skaters play as forwards or defensemen, helping move the puck and contributing to both offense and defense. Goalies wear specialized protective equipment and have distinct rules in the NHL; the exact rules and equipment requirements can differ in other leagues and age groups.
What does a goalie do in hockey?
The goalie, also called the goalkeeper, guards the team’s net. The central task is to stop the opposing team from scoring, usually by blocking or catching shots. Goalies also communicate with teammates and can play the puck when the rules allow; they are not simply stationary players who never take part in puck movement.

Goalie is a separate position from the skater positions. A team’s skaters include forwards and defensemen, and the players in those roles share responsibilities for attacking and defending.

What do skaters do?
Forwards
Forwards generally focus on creating scoring chances, carrying or passing the puck, and pressuring the opposition. They also defend: for example, they may backcheck, challenge opponents for possession, and help protect their own end.

Defensemen
Defensemen work to prevent the opposition from generating chances near their net, regain possession, and move the puck out of the defensive zone. They can also join the attack and take shots. The roles are different, but offense and defense are team responsibilities rather than tasks belonging exclusively to one position.
Goalie vs. skater at a glance
| Aspect | Goalie | Skater |
|---|---|---|
| Position | Goalkeeper, responsible for protecting the net | Forward or defenseman |
| Main role | Stop shots and prevent goals; play the puck where permitted | Move the puck, create or prevent scoring chances, and contribute to offense and defense |
| Equipment | Specialized protective equipment, including a mask, leg pads, and chest-and-arm protection | Standard player equipment and a player stick; the exact equipment list depends on the league |
| Rules | Subject to goalkeeper-specific privileges, restrictions, and equipment requirements | Subject to skater rules; being substituted for the goalie does not automatically confer goalkeeper privileges under the cited 2021–22 NHL rule text |
What equipment does a hockey goalie wear?
Goalie gear is designed for the demands of stopping shots and differs from a skater’s standard player equipment. Core examples include a mask, leg pads, and a chest-and-arm protector. This is not a complete equipment checklist: required gear, approved designs, and specifications depend on the player’s league and age group.

Fit matters as well as protection. NHL equipment rules regulate goalie gear, including the dimensions and sizing of leg pads. The NHL’s 2024–25 rules describe leg pads as anatomically proportional and size-specific and set out measurement requirements; those are specifications for that edition, not universal measurements or a substitute for checking the current rulebook. See NHL Official Rules 2024–2025, Section 3 – Equipment.
In a 2018 account of NHL/NHLPA changes to chest-and-arm pads, the NHL said the goal was protective gear that fits a goalie’s body without adding unnecessary puck-blocking area. Kay Whitmore, then NHL vice president of hockey operations, said: “The chest and arm protector worn by each goalkeeper must be anatomically proportional and size-specific based on the individual physical characteristics of that goalkeeper.” This describes the NHL policy discussed in that article, not a universal equipment rule for every league. NHL.com’s September 17, 2018 report gives the background.

How do NHL rules treat goalies differently?
NHL rules distinguish the goalkeeper from a skater. The distinction affects what a goalie may do and the restrictions that apply, including rules for playing the puck. The NHL’s Video Rulebook links to the 2026–27 Official Rules and includes explainers on handling the puck and goalie interference.
For example, NHL reference tables for 2025–26 identify goalkeeper-specific penalties for participating in play beyond the center red line and playing the puck in a restricted area. Those are NHL examples tied to that season’s reference table, not rules to assume apply identically in another league or season. Consult the rulebook for the applicable season before relying on a particular restriction; the NHL’s 2025–26 Official Rules reference tables identify those examples.

A skater who is substituted for the goalie does not automatically gain goalie privileges. The cited 2021–22 NHL rule text makes that distinction. For a current decision, check the current edition rather than treating older wording as current: the NHL Video Rulebook links to its 2026–27 rules.

Which rules should a player follow?
NHL examples are useful for understanding how a professional league differentiates goalies and skaters, but they are not a universal rule set. Youth, amateur, international, and recreational competitions may have different rules, equipment standards, or approval requirements.
