A 2007 Chemistry World report titled “Historic sunset regained” described an attempt to recreate sunsets lost from a 19th-century watercolor. The available account does not establish which painting was involved or confirm the reconstruction’s outcome.
What “Historic sunset regained” refers to
The headline appeared in Chemistry World on 3 April 2007, with an indexed subtitle describing chemists racing to recreate sunsets lost from a 19th-century watercolor. A second article with the same headline appeared on 26 April and was indexed as a report about US chemists. The accessible records do not provide enough detail to establish whether these were separate reports about the same project or to verify the specific painting and final result. Chemistry World

How a lost watercolor color can be investigated
Fading can change the balance of colors in a watercolor: if an unstable red pigment disappears, surviving yellows and other colors may no longer combine visually as they once did. A 2007 Photonics Spectra feature describes pigment sampling in a watercolor that originally showed an orange sunset; it attributes the loss of that effect to fading red lake pigment. The analyzed particles included chrome yellow, vermilion, and an unidentified red lake. The accessible evidence does not confirm that this is the same watercolor discussed in the exact-title Chemistry World report. Photonics Spectra: Analyzing Pigments in Watercolor Paintings

The feature discusses Raman spectroscopy and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy as methods for analyzing very small pigment samples. These techniques can help identify materials without relying only on visual appearance, an important distinction when the color seen today may have changed since the painting was made. The available material describes the methods but does not give a verified reconstruction recipe or a confirmed result for the headline project.

Why Turner is relevant—but not a confirmed identification
Turner’s materials provide useful historical context: a specialist study reports that he used a wide range of pigments, including chrome yellow and organic red pigments in watercolor and oil. That does not establish that the painting in the 2007 headline was by Turner. National Gallery technical bulletin on Turner’s materials
The Frick’s record for J. M. W. Turner’s Le Havre: Sunset, circa 1827, describes a watercolor on paper strengthened with pen and red ink. The museum notes that thin pigment washes make figures and buildings seem to dissolve in the setting sun. It is a comparison that illustrates how Turner used watercolor, not evidence that this is the painting behind the Chemistry World headline. The Frick Collection: Le Havre: Sunset

What can—and cannot—be concluded
- The 2007 headline concerns an effort to recreate sunsets that had faded from a 19th-century watercolor.
- A related pigment-analysis account describes an orange sunset diminished by fading red lake pigment, with chrome yellow, vermilion, and an unidentified red lake among the sampled particles.
- Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy are discussed as tools for examining tiny pigment samples.
- The exact painting, its connection to Turner, and the outcome of the reconstruction are not verified by the accessible source text.
That distinction matters: identifying pigments in a related watercolor can explain how a sunset might disappear, but it cannot by itself identify the artwork or prove how chemists restored its original appearance.
