What the HRBF179B is—and what its capacity means
Hisense Australia lists the HRBF179B as a black, 179 L bar fridge. The official specification divides that total into 156 L of fresh-food space and a 23 L “ice-making (Zero star)” compartment. The smaller compartment may suit ice-making, but the zero-star rating is an important limit: do not count it as ordinary frozen-food storage for keeping groceries frozen over an extended period. Its single-door layout and 515 mm width suggest a use case where a tall, relatively narrow secondary fridge is more useful than a wide main kitchen model. That is a fit inferred from its published dimensions and capacity, not an independently tested suitability finding.

These energy-use, rating and noise figures are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent measurements. The specification sheet does not state a year for them; actual running cost will depend on the electricity tariff and use. The warranty term is listed by Hisense; the available evidence does not establish exclusions or service quality.

Defrosting: semi-automatic does not mean frost-free
Hisense’s product page calls the defrost feature semi-automatic, while its technical sheet lists the defrost cycle as manual. The descriptions are not evidence of a frost-free system. If avoiding manual intervention is a priority, check the current manual and ask Hisense to explain the button-assisted operation before buying.
Does independent testing support a recommendation?
CHOICE lists the HRBF179B as tested in 2026 and publicly shows claimed energy use of 172 kWh/year, a 2.5-star rating, a three-year warranty, and claimed total and fridge volumes of 179 L and 156 L. Its public page does not show the substantive test scores. Temperature range, response to outside temperature, default-setting, heat-load, running-cost and noise-test results, as well as reliability and satisfaction results, are member-only. No independent hands-on performance results are available here, so cooling effectiveness, real-world noise, reliability and household suitability cannot be verified from the published specifications alone.
Measure the space before ordering
The cabinet dimensions are only part of the required space. Hisense’s specification sheet calls for 50 mm clearance on each side, 50 mm at the rear and 100 mm above the fridge. Allow room for the door to swing and check that the appliance can be moved through the route to its final position.

- Check the available width against the 515 mm cabinet width plus the stated side clearances.
- Check height against 1229 mm plus 100 mm overhead clearance.
- Check depth against 514 mm plus 50 mm at the rear, and account for door movement and access.
Consult the Hisense manual for the HRBF179B, HRBF179R and HRBF179 before operation and for model-specific installation and care instructions.
Who should consider it?
- Potential fit: someone seeking a tall, narrow secondary fridge for chilled food and drinks, with door storage, a chiller zone and interior LED lighting listed by Hisense.
- Look elsewhere or verify carefully: anyone who needs meaningful frozen-food capacity should not assume the 23 L zero-star ice-making compartment will meet that need. Consider a fridge-freezer with a properly rated freezer section.
- Compare before deciding: check fresh-food capacity, freezer capability, installation dimensions and clearances, defrost method, energy claims, warranty and the delivered price available to you.
