Hisense 65U8QAU Review: A Bright, Feature-Rich Mini-LED TV With Trade-Offs

The Australian 65-inch Hisense 65U8QAU looks compelling on paper: 4K resolution, a listed 165 Hz refresh rate, Mini-LED backlighting, gaming features and a built-in 4.1.2-channel audio system. Two Australian reviewers describe vivid pictures and strong contrast, but one also reports that some picture modes can crush dark detail. It is worth considering if you want a bright, gaming-capable TV and are comfortable with VIDAA; check the picture presets, app catalogue, HDMI count and current delivered price before buying.

What the Australian 65U8QAU offers

This is the Australian 65-inch model, not a regional U8QG variant. Hisense lists a 3840 × 2160 LCD/LED panel, Mini-LED PRO backlighting, VIDAA U9 and a 165 Hz refresh rate. Its listed HDR formats are Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10+ Adaptive and HDR10. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Hisense Australia’s product page says brightness data can vary by screen size and advertises “up to 5000 nits” peak brightness; treat that as a company claim, not a verified measurement.

Ray Shaw’s I’mTech comparison lists 2048 dimming zones for the 65-inch set and a 48–165 Hz range, with specifications stated as correct on 18 June 2025. That review also says its examination was not a controlled laboratory test. The zone count is useful context for the Mini-LED system, but it does not guarantee a particular picture in every scene or viewing mode. I’mTech’s review and comparison also says the 65-inch model uses a VA panel, unlike the 55- and 75-inch variants, which it identifies as IPS-ADS. Do not assume all U8QAU sizes have the same panel characteristics.

Ports, connectivity and setup

Hisense lists three HDMI inputs, identified as HDMI 2.1, with HDMI 3 supporting ARC. It also lists one USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 port, Ethernet, Bluetooth 5.3, AirPlay 2, voice control and Wi-Fi across 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz. If you use several consoles, a PC, a set-top box and a sound system, count the inputs you need before purchase; three HDMI ports can make device switching or an HDMI switch part of the setup.

Mini-LED backlighting uses hundreds of precise light zones to enhance contrast across the screen. Paired with Hi-QLED technology, every color comes through with stunning depth and accuracy
  • NATIVE 144HZ REFRESH RATE: Fast breaks, high-speed chases, live finales — every frame stays crisp and fluid, so the action is always exactly where you need it to be. Native 144Hz refresh performance keeps movement fast and sharp, reducing blur during gameplay and live sports. The quick response helps you stay in control during competitive gaming while making rapid camera shots in shows and movies easier to follow
  • BUILT-IN SUBWOOFER: Immersive deep bass from the built-in subwoofer pulls you into the heart of the moment, from the rumble of an explosion to the thump of your favorite song. Feel like you’re a part of the action
  • ANTI-REFLECTION & GLARE-FREE: Bright rooms are no match for this screen. The anti-reflection and glare-free display keeps your view clean and distraction-free, so you stay focused on what matters — the show
  • UNIBODY SLIM DESIGN: Edge-to-edge display and a seamless design that disappears into your room — so all you see is the picture

The listed dimensions are 1448 × 838 × 45 mm without the stand, and 1448 mm wide with it; Hisense lists the weight with stand as 29.2 kg. The manufacturer specifies a three-year warranty. Confirm the exact retailer SKU, current warranty terms and wall-mount requirements in the product documentation before installation.

How good is the picture?

The two Australian reviews are broadly positive about impact and brightness, but they are individual viewing assessments rather than controlled measurements. Trevor Long at EFTM reported vivid colour and strong contrast and black performance, while recommending that buyers try picture presets to find a brightness and colour balance they prefer. EFTM’s review, published 14 July 2025, assigns the TV 89%.

Shaw’s I’mTech review likewise notes brightness and anti-reflection strengths, but says some modes can look overbright, crush blacks and lose dark-scene detail. He says calibration can largely address that observation. As with other LCD televisions using local dimming, bright objects against dark backgrounds may also show halos; the review’s caveat is not evidence that every scene or preset will exhibit the same effect. Try the set with the kind of content you watch, and check shadow detail as well as peak brightness.

Bright rooms and dark scenes

The brightness-focused feature set and reviewers’ comments make the U8QAU a plausible candidate for a bright living room, but the advertised 5000-nit figure should not be used to predict a measured result in your room. Reflections, seating position, picture mode and ambient light all affect what you perceive. For evening viewing, pay particular attention to whether dark scenes retain detail at your preferred preset rather than judging the TV only from vivid demo footage.

Is the 65U8QAU good for gaming?

Hisense lists 165 Hz and VRR, and I’mTech’s June 2025 comparison gives the 65-inch model a 48–165 Hz range. That makes the headline refresh specification attractive for compatible gaming sources, but the source, game, settings and connection all matter. The TV has three HDMI inputs, so check how many devices need a direct connection and whether your sound system will use the HDMI 3 ARC port.

Hisense 65" E7 Cinema Series Hi-QLED Mini-LED 4K UHD Smart Fire TV (65E7SF, 2026 NEW) - Native 144Hz, AI Picture, Dolby Vision IQ · Atmos, FALD, HDR10+ Adaptive, MEMC, Alexa+
  • HI-QLED MINILED: Mini-LED backlighting uses thousands of precise light zones to enhance contrast across the screen, revealing deeper shadows, brighter highlights, and more visible detail. Whether watching movies at night or sports during the day, the picture stays clear and impactful
  • NATIVE 144HZ GAME MODE: High refresh performance keeps fast movement fluid and sharp, reducing blur during gameplay and live sports. The quick response helps you stay in control during competitive gaming while making rapid camera shots in shows and movies easier to follow
  • DOLBY VISION & DOLBY ATMOS: Experience cinematic HDR with vivid brightness and deeper contrast through Dolby Vision, paired with immersive, room-filling sound from Dolby Atmos—so every scene feels bigger, clearer, and more lifelike from your couch
  • AI PICTURE: Advanced AI processing analyzes content scene by scene and automatically optimizes brightness, contrast, and color for a clearer, more natural image. Whether you’re streaming shows, watching sports, or gaming, the picture adjusts in real time to look its best without manual settings
  • AI SMOOTH MOTION WITH MEMC: Motion enhancement technology reduces blur and sharpens fast-moving scenes, keeping action crisp and easy to follow. From live sports to action movies and gaming, fast transitions stay smooth and comfortable to watch

The refresh rate is a specification, not a claim that every game or console will output at 165 frames per second. Match the TV’s supported features to your actual source devices and game library, and verify the precise capabilities in the manual for the Australian SKU.

VIDAA U9: fast, but check the apps you need

The Australian model runs VIDAA U9, not Google TV. EFTM’s Long described the interface as quick and functional, but criticized the home-screen app navigation, advertising and a narrower free-channel offering than Samsung TV Plus. Those are one reviewer’s observations, and app catalogues can change. Before choosing it, confirm that the Australian VIDAA store currently offers the streaming and catch-up services you use.

Do not rely on overseas U8QG reviews to answer questions about this TV. I’mTech says the Australian U8QAU is a distinct model and is not directly comparable with the U8QG sold in the US and Europe, which uses Google TV. The operating system and regional specifications are part of the difference.

How it compares with the Hisense U7QAU

The U7QAU is a useful same-brand comparison, but compare the exact screen size and Australian SKU rather than assuming every size has identical specifications. In I’mTech’s 65-inch comparison, the U7QAU is listed with 220 dimming zones and a 48–144 Hz range, versus 2048 zones and 48–165 Hz for the U8QAU. EFTM says the U7 has more HDMI ports and identifies sound as a key specification advantage for the U8. These are review-source comparisons; check current official specifications for both models before deciding.

Hisense U7QAU 220 (I’mTech comparison, 2025) 48–144 Hz (I’mTech comparison, 2025) EFTM says it has more HDMI ports than the U8QAU; I’mTech comparison does not state a port count.

Choose between them by weighing the features you will use: gaming refresh, number of connected devices, built-in sound, picture performance in your room, platform and delivered price. The U8’s larger zone count is a specification difference, not a guarantee that it will suit every viewer or scene better.

Built-in sound and audio options

Hisense describes the U8QAU’s audio as 4.1.2-channel multi-channel surround with Dolby Atmos. This is a manufacturer description; it does not establish how the set will sound in your room or whether its built-in speakers can replace a soundbar for your listening preferences. If you already own an audio system, account for the HDMI 3 ARC connection when planning devices and cabling.

Price and buying checks in Australia

Prices are snapshots, not a current quote. Hisense’s product page showed $2,399 and out of stock in search results; Appliances Online displayed $2,299 when accessed; CHOICE’s product page listed $2,399. Those retailer observations lack a common access date, so use them only as dated reference points and check the live price, stock, delivery and return terms with the seller. EFTM reported about $2,695 against a $2,999 list price in its 14 July 2025 review; that is a historical review-time price, not today’s offer.

CHOICE identifies a model-specific product page and Wi-Fi 802.11ax, but its detailed test outcome was not visible in the published content, so no CHOICE score or verdict can be stated. Appliances Online showed 4.6 from eight reviews at access; that small retailer sample is not a representative test result. ProductReview contains mixed personal comments, including reports about other screen sizes, so it is weak evidence for how a 65-inch unit will perform.

Before ordering, confirm the Australian suffix 65U8QAU, delivery cost, return policy and warranty for the exact retailer listing. If wall-mounting, use the official manual to verify VESA pattern, load rating and installation requirements rather than selecting a mount based on screen size alone.

Who should buy the Hisense 65U8QAU?

  • Consider it if you want a bright 65-inch 4K Mini-LED TV, value the listed high refresh rate and VRR, and are comfortable checking whether VIDAA has your apps.
  • Compare alternatives first if you need more than three HDMI inputs, prioritize a specific smart-TV platform or expect built-in sound to replace a dedicated audio system.
  • Try the picture in person if possible if shadow detail and dark-scene presentation matter more to you than a vivid showroom image.

At a strong delivered price, the specification mix and positive Australian viewing impressions make the U8QAU worth shortlisting. The main reason not to buy it sight unseen is that picture-mode balance, app fit and port needs are practical trade-offs that the headline brightness and refresh figures do not settle.
