When Christian Fredrik Kalager Schaller’s newer Plustek OpticFilm 8200i refused to work with Linux, the problem was not a missing button or a simple configuration error. A chipset revision had made the scanner incompatible with the existing SANE path. His eventual solution was to run the vendor’s Windows software in a virtual machine, capture exactly what it sent to the real scanner, and have Claude Code compare that known-good behavior with Linux.
The case demonstrates a practical limit and a promising use of AI for hardware support: an agent can decode traces, write probes and identify mismatches quickly, but it needs a working reference device and a human who can test every change on physical hardware.

Why a scanner listed as Linux-supported stopped working
Schaller bought a Plustek OpticFilm 8200i to digitize family film negatives. The model had been listed as Linux-supported, but his unit used a newer chipset that the existing Linux backend did not understand. SANE could not use the scanner even though an earlier hardware revision had worked.

The reference-trace method that changed the project
Schaller’s first effort tried to infer behavior from software and incomplete observations. The later approach, documented as hw-harness, treated the working Windows driver as a behavioral oracle for the exact scanner on his desk.
- Record a known-good session. He ran the vendor’s Windows scanning software inside a KVM virtual machine and passed the physical scanner through to that guest.
- Capture the USB traffic. The Linux host observed the guest’s real USB transactions with
usbmon, producing a trace of commands, responses and timing. - Repeat the same operation in Linux. He performed an equivalent scan through the Linux driver, rather than comparing unrelated workflows.
- Diff the traces. Claude Code helped decode captures, write probing tools and compare the Windows and Linux sessions. The differences became a concrete list of driver behaviors to fix.
The important change was not that Claude “read the Windows driver and ported it.” Observing what a working driver actually sent to the same instrument removed much of the guesswork that makes undocumented hardware difficult to support.
What the scanner work achieved
Schaller reports that he had his first recognizable Linux scan within a few hours. He described the initial image as having quality problems but as “100% recognizable as the image in the negative.” Several days later, he reported a near-perfect backend, including infrared scanning.

His custom backend supports color, gray, infrared and color-plus-infrared modes; resolutions from 300 to 7200 dpi; 8-bit and 16-bit channels; infrared dust and scratch removal; and an exposure multiplier for dense negatives. He says both his backend and the upstream implementation resolve the same fine detail at 3600 dpi.

The timings are not a universal benchmark: they come from one scanner and one frame, with no claim that every revision or computer will produce the same result. Schaller presents his backend as a proof of concept and expects users to favor upstream SANE as feature parity improves.
What failed in the first attempt
In a March 23, 2026 project log, Schaller described a much longer trial-and-error process. He supplied Windows and Mac driver material to Claude, collected Wireshark logs, configured an ARM board as a USB relay, ordered a Beagle USB 480 hardware analyzer, studied Genesys Logic GL845 documentation, decompiled the Windows driver with Ghidra, and built camera and sound tools to observe the scanner.

That work could make SANE detect the device and control its motor and lamp, but it could not establish whether movement, command ordering or timing were correct. Without specialist scanner knowledge, each change lacked a reliable pass/fail signal. A recognizable scan from the real device provided that signal.

Can Claude write a Linux driver from a Windows driver?
It can assist substantially, but the scanner story does not show autonomous driver conversion. Claude Code was useful for tedious work: decoding USB captures, generating probes, checking command sequences and highlighting differences between sessions. Schaller supplied the hardware access, selected the experiments and judged whether the resulting scans were correct.
His summary is a useful division of labor: the human decides what to build and verifies it on real hardware, while the agent reduces the slog. “Real hardware is the only judge,” he wrote. A trace that looks plausible can still produce incorrect exposure, movement, color or timing.

When the same method works—and when it does not
Devices with an observable bus
USB scanners are a strong fit because the host can capture traffic and repeat the same operation. The method is most informative when you can use the same physical unit, perform identical scans and compare complete sessions.
Devices without an easy bus tap
For an internal MIPI camera, Schaller’s harness instead examined Windows INF files, registry data, ACPI tables and device properties. Those sources can reveal configuration and metadata, but they do not provide the same direct command-by-command view as a USB capture.

- A known-good reference session from the same device.
- A repeatable operation that can be performed in both operating systems.
- Visibility into the USB bus or, for embedded devices, relevant firmware and platform metadata.
- Enough domain expertise to interpret failures instead of blindly matching bytes.
- Validation on the physical hardware after every significant change.
- A plan to upstream the result, rather than leaving a one-device proof of concept.
The camera follow-on shows the broader value
Schaller reused the harness on a Sony IMX471 camera behind Intel IPU7 in a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition. He reports five fixes: a crop-selection error in the kernel driver, an incorrectly sized test-pattern register, a low analogue-gain cap, missing lens-shading correction in libcamera, and white-balance statistics calculated with mismatched bit depths.

In a controlled low-light test, frame brightness increased from 31.1 to 90.9. The red-to-green ratio changed from 0.890 to 1.047, while blue-to-green changed from 0.672 to 0.823. Blue remained about 17% below a USB-webcam reference. Schaller said kernel patches had been submitted and libcamera patches were under review at publication, so these figures describe an in-progress improvement rather than a finished camera-quality guarantee.
What Linux users should do with an OpticFilm 8200i
- Check current upstream SANE support first. Upstream added support for the scanner in September 2026, so a current distribution may work without a custom backend.
- Identify the hardware revision. Do not assume that every OpticFilm 8200i has the same chipset or compatibility.
- Test the modes you actually need. Confirm color, gray, infrared, resolution and bit-depth behavior rather than stopping at device detection.
- Use a Windows virtual machine as a reference or fallback. Passing the scanner through to a KVM guest can provide the vendor-supported path while you investigate Linux support.
- Prefer an upstreamed backend when available. A maintained SANE implementation is more practical than carrying a private proof of concept indefinitely.
The larger lesson is transferable to other unsupported hardware. AI is most effective when it receives a controlled, known-good behavioral reference—not when it is asked to guess undocumented behavior from a binary dump alone.
